This document is an addendum to the Washington Connected Landscapes Project: Columbia Plateau Climate-Gradient Corridor Analysis (WHCWG 2013a; available from http://waconnected.org). It includes supplemental maps and guidance that can help prioritize and implement connectivity conservation actions that may benefit species under climate change. The analyses presented in the addendum build upon the climate-gradient corridors modeled for the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion and a surrounding buffer area (Fig. 1; WHCWG 2013a). The supplemental products in this addendum include maps, interpretive examples, and GIS files depicting linkage pinch-points and barriers and restoration opportunities for climate-gradient corridors...

We will develop an approach to identify fire refugia in Rocky Mountain ecosystems of the U.S. and Canada then test the function of refugia for biodiversity conservation under current and future climate/fire scenarios. Our products will be designed to inform decision-making in land/easement acquisition, identification of critical areas for maintaining landscape and process connectivity/permeability, and extension of the temporal context for spatial conservation decision making. The approach will be testable for transferability to other locations and ecosystems.

NorWeST summer stream temperature scenarios were developed for all rivers and streams in the western U.S. from the > 20,000 stream sites in the NorWeST database where mean August stream temperatures were recorded. The scenarios include: 1) Adobe PDF format maps depicting historical and future modeled mean August stream temperatures, 2) graphs (JPG format) demonstrating the accuracy of the temperature model, and 3) GIS shapefiles (SHP format) representing the spatially modeled stream temperatures. The GIS shapefiles include stream lines and associated mid-points representing 1 kilometer intervals along the stream network. Stream lines were derived from the 1:100,000 scale NHDPlus dataset (USEPA and USGS 2010; McKay...

Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) forests have been declining throughout their range in western North America from the combined effects of mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) outbreaks, fire exclusion policies, and the exotic disease white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola). Projected warming and drying trends in climate may exacerbate this decline; however, whitebark pine has a wide climatic tolerance because of its broad distribution coupled with high genetic diversity. A rangewide whitebark pine restoration strategy (Keane et al. 2012b) was developed recently to inform restoration efforts for whitebark pine across Federal, State, and Provincial land management agencies. This strategy, however,...

Fragmentation is a growing threat to wildlife worldwide and managers need solutions to reverseits impacts on species’ populations. Populations of grizzly bears (Ursus arctos), often considered an umbrellaand focal species for largemammal conservation, are fragmented by human settlement and major highways inthe trans-border region of southern British Columbia, northern Montana, Idaho, and northeasternWashington. To improve prospects for bear movement among 5 small fragmented grizzly bearsubpopulations, we asked 2 inter-related questions: Are there preferred linkage habitats for grizzly bearsacross settled valleys with major highways in the fragmented trans-border region, and if so, could we predictthem using a combination...

The Plains and Prairie Potholes Ecoregion (PPPE), is located in the north-central contiguous United States and is one of the most imperiled grassland regions in the world. Most of the region is privately owned and used for the production of agricultural commodities. In addition to its direct benefits to humanity, the PPPE provides multiple ecosystem services including, soil and water quality improvements, carbon sequestration, weather amelioration, and wildlife habitat. Recent increases in expansion of row crop agriculture concerns conservation practitioners about the long-term integrity of the PPPE. Conservation practitioners are looking to improve their private landowner conservation initiatives in the region....

The goal of the Bristol Bay Regional Water Temperature Monitoring Network is to generate water temperature data which meet the information needs of individual cooperators while simultaneously generating data relevant for assessing changes in stream and lake temperatures at a regional scale. The Network’s short-term (3-5 year) objectives are to: increase data collecting capacity in the Bristol Bay region; institute the use of minimum data collection standards to produce data useful for the analysis of regional trends; compliment and leverage other monitoring efforts; update and submit site-specific metadata annually to the Alaska Online Aquatic Temperature Site project (a statewide metadata clearinghouse); and...

This collection comprises the memoranda that have been produced annually since 2012 by MBM-Alaska for the Pacific Flyway to report abundance indices of lesser Canada geese, Taverner’s cackling geese, Western Population tundra swans, and trumpeter swans. The abundance indices of lesser Canada Geese and trumpeter swans were derived solely from WBPHS_AK data. Indices of Western Population tundra swans were derived from data collected during two MBM-AK surveys: WBPHS_AK and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone Survey. Taverner’s cackling goose indices were derived from three MBM-AK surveys: WBPHS_AK, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone Survey, and the Arctic Coastal Plain Survey. For further information on these...

Sky Island Alliance (SIA) is a non-governmental organizational that works to protect and restore the rich natural heritage of native species and habitats in the Sky Island Region. We work with volunteers, scientists, land-owners, public officials, and government agencies to establish protected areas, restore healthy landscapes, and promote public appreciation of the region’s unique biological diversity. Because of our long-standing collaborative relationships with land managers and our large corps of skilled volunteers, we were in a unique position to spearhead this project.SIA initiated this springs inventory, assessment and management planning project to develop baseline information on springs in the Sky Island...

Riparian ecosystems are among the most productive and diverse ecosystems in desert biomes. In the Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Mojave deserts of the United States and Mexico, riparian ecosystems support regional biodiversity and provide many ecosystem services to human communities. Due to the dynamic nature of these ecosystems and their abundance of resources, riparian areas have been modified in various ways and to a large extent through human endeavor to manage water and accommodate various land uses, particularly in lowland floodplains and stream channels. Modifications often interfere with multiple and complex ecological processes, resulting in the loss of native riparian vegetation and increasing vulnerability...

Seasonal change is important to consider when managing conservation areas at landscape scales. The study of such patterns throughout the year is referred to as phenology. Recurring life-cycle events that are initiated and driven by environmental factors include animal migration and plant flowering. Phenological events capture public attention, such as fall color change in deciduous forests, the first flowering in spring, and for those with allergies, the start of the pollen season. These events can affect our daily lives, provide clues to help understand and manage ecosystems, and provide evidence of how climate variability can affect the natural cycle of plants and animals. Phenological observations can be gathered...
