Cropland conversion is anticipated to continue westward from the Great Plains into the sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) biome – the most intact biome remaining in the conterminous United States. However, relatively little is known about the extent and risk of cropland conversion to sagebrush ecosystems and the landscape scale benefits of easements in averting loss of ecological function. Therefore, our goals were to 1) quantify the cropland area of the sagebrush biome, 2) identify where the highest quality sagebrush rangelands are most at risk to future cropland conversion, and 3) estimate the ecological benefits of conservation easements to adjacent public lands. We found that croplands span 14.4 million ha in the sagebrush...

This dataset contains a raster representing current (2017-2020) core sagebrush, growth opportunity areas, and other rangelands on tribal and federal lands that are estimated to be climate resilient into the future (2030-2060). We determined climate-resiliency by comparing current (2017-2020) core sagebrush, growth opportunity areas, and other rangelands to estimated future (2030-2060) conditions of core and growth opportunity areas under mid-century climate change (Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5) conditions (Doherty et al. 2022). The Department of the Interior (DOI) Sagebrush Keystone Initiative (KI) team worked with partners to identify areas within the sagebrush biome for strategic investments in conservation...

These data were compiled to investigate the distribution and breeding status of yellow-billed cuckoos (Coccyzus americanus) in southeastern Arizona xeroriparian habitat by comparing the results of standardized call-playback surveys to the results of nest searching efforts in the same sites from 2018 to 2020. The primary purpose of the study associated with these data was to determine and document the occurrence and extent of nesting in these poorly studied xeroriparian habitats. These data represent breeding evidence for yellow-billed cuckoos at 54 documented sites from 2018-2020 and the results of yellow-billed cuckoo surveys collected at 163 sites from 2013-2020 in xeroriparian habitats in southeastern Arizona....
This data release comprises the tabular data used to develop regression equations for estimating selected low-flow statistics for ungaged streams in Ohio that are not substantially affected by regulation, diversions, or other anthropogenic influences, and the geographic information systems (GIS) layer to implement them in the U.S. Geological Survey StreamStats application (https://streamstats.usgs.gov). A statewide recharge-based estimate of streamflow variability index (SVI) was used as an explanatory variable in developing many of the equations to estimate selected low-flow statistics at ungaged sites in Ohio and is included as part of this data release. Regressions, using SVI as the explanatory variable, were...
