We developed a LiDAR-based habitat model for the threatened Marbled Murrelet (MAMU) in the Siuslaw National Forest, Oregon, using a two-step approach. First, we tested the applicability of the LiDAR-based model developed for the Coos Bay District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to the Siuslaw N.F. In the second step, we tested alternative habitat models developed with forest structural data and Murrelet survey data from the Siuslaw N.F. We compared the performance of each model to provide forest managers with the best predictive tool to guide habitat management for the Marbled Murrelet. This shapefile contains the probability of Marbled Murrelet occupancy values of each model for vegetation polygons defined...

Between 2011 and 2018, numerous restoration treatments were constructed on the Straight and Braided Reaches of the Kootenai River in northern Idaho as part of the Kootenai River Habitat Restoration Project. This child item of the larger data release contains two .csv file with the data used to investigate the potential impacts of restoration treatments on suspended sediment transport within the study reach. One .csv file contains data collected between 2006 and 2023 at the upstream end of the study reach at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgage Kootenai River Below Moyie River (streamgage 12308000) and USGS site 4842231161104. The other file contains data collected between 2006 and 2023 at the downstream end...

Data presented are results of surveys for California Gnatcatchers and vegetation sampling conducted in 2015 and 2016 to address two inter-related questions: (1) How have gnatcatchers and their habitat recovered in areas burned by wildfires in 2003, 2007, and 2014?, and (2) What is the current regional occupancy of gnatcatchers throughout their southern California range? Data for the post-fire study were collected in 2015 and 2016, while the regional occupancy survey was conducted in 2016. In 2015, Gnatcatcher occupancy as a function of fire history was derived from 324 points in the following fire categories: 2003-2006 (106 points), 2007-2010 (111 points), and 2011-2014 (107 points). In 2016, points representing...

This project has two goals: Goal 1: The goal of this project is to conduct a statistically rigorous study of occupancy to determine the post-fire recovery of gnatcatchers and coastal sage scrub vegetation with the goal of informing management before, during, and after fire. Goal 2: The goal of this project is to conduct rangewide surveys to determine California Gnatcatcher occupancy at a regional scale. Because California Gnatcatchers will be managed through management of coastal sage scrub rather than through species-specific actions, it is necessary to determine the current status of gnatcatchers on protected lands in southern California to understand how gnatcatcher occupancy is related to coastal sage scrub...

The two-dimensional (2D) hydraulic flow model International River Interface Cooperative with the Flow and Sediment Transport with Morphological Evolution of Channels solver (iRIC FaSTMECH) was used to investigate the impacts of habitat restoration treatments on hydraulic conditions in the Braided and Straight Reaches of the Kootenai River near Bonners Ferry, ID. The treatments were constructed between 2012 and 2018. Topographic surfaces from 2011, 2020, and 2022 were used to simulate hydraulic conditions before and after restoration treatments were built. Three different flow conditions (discharge and downstream water surface elevation) from the 2020 spring snowmelt hydrograph were simulated on a 5-meter model grid...

Data were collected as part of a long-term capture-recapture program to assess the status and dynamics of populations of two long-lived, federally endangered catostomids in Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon and Clear Lake Reservoir, California. Lost River suckers (LRS; Deltistes luxatus) and shortnose suckers (SNS; Chasmistes brevirostris) have been captured and tagged with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags during their spawning migrations in each year since 1995.PIT tagged species were encountered in netting efforts, remote transceivers, and active scanning on bird colonies across the Upper Klamath River Basin (predominately Upper Klamath Lake and Clear Lake Reservoir). The data includes detections for endangered...

The two-dimensional (2D) hydraulic flow model iRIC FaSTMECH (Nelson, 2003) was used to simulate hydraulic conditions in the Kootenai River near Bonners Ferry, ID during white sturgeon spawning season during 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. Details on model development and calibration in FaSTMECH can be found in other studies (Dudunake and others, in progress; Barton and others, 2005; Barton and others, 2007; Logan and others, 2011; McDonald and others, 2016; McDonald and Nelson, 2018; McDonald and Nelson, 2020). Simulations were run with a 1-meter grid and six-hour time-steps from April 25 to August 15 of 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. Simulated depths and depth-averaged velocities were exported.

This dataset contains genomic records from 184 California Gnatcatchers (Polioptila californica) collected at 18 sites in southern California (USA), 13 sites in Baja California (Mexico), and 17 sites in Baja California Sur (Mexico). Genomic markers were generated from ddRAD loci (Peterson and others, 2012) and analyzed using the Stacks v2.53 (Catchen and others, 2013) pipeline. The genotypes for all samples are provided in a VCF file with 84,125 independent loci and 7 percent missing data. A companion file is provided with sample names and occurrence designations. These files may be opened and edited in a text editor program, such as Notepad (PC) or BBEdit (Mac). The .vcf file can be loaded into the Stacks population...

Between 2011 and 2018, numerous restoration treatments were constructed in the Straight and Braided and Straight Reaches of the Kootenai River in northern Idaho as part of the Kootenai River Habitat Restoration Project. Led by the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, the project aimed to address a range of anthropogenic impacts inhibiting natural recruitment of the critically endangered Kootenai River white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) and other native fish species. This data release contains information for two analyses used to assess the impact of the restoration treatments on channel morphology, flow depths, flow velocity, the extent of pools, and suspended sediment transport within the study reach. Two-dimensional...

These data were collected as part of a trapping effort for endangered threespine stickleback in Soledad Canyon, Santa Clara River watershed in California. The two-year survey effort took place in 2021 and 2022. We reported survey reach identities, stream sections, and numbers of fish captured per trapping effort.

Species distribution models (SDMs) can be an important tool in rare species conservation. Specifically, SDMs have been used to location previously unknown populations and identify sites for reintroduction or translocation. With these goals in mind, we applied SDM to a recently listed plant species, Pectis imberbis, which is found in the Madrean Archipelago region of southern Arizona, USA, and northern Mexico. We used presence-pseudoabsence data and applied 10 replicates of 5 modeling algorithms, generalized linear model (GLM), generalized additive model (GAM, generalized boosted model (GBM, aka boosted regression trees), random forests (RF), and classification tree analysis (CTA) to 4 different predictor datasets...

The North American Bee Distribution Tool is an interactive portal that allows for rapid assessment of apparent bee species richness throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tool incorporates species occurrence data of six families of bees using data provided by GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility, www.gbif.org), as well as conservation status rankings provided by NatureServe (www.natureserve.org). Users can filter from a variety of options, such as temporal range, geographic location (country, state, county, FWS legacy region), NatureServe conservation status, or taxonomic classification (family, genus, species). The tool is comprised of a central map showing spatial distribution of bee species...
