The GNLCC Multi-dimensional Synthesis is a synthesis of existing information in four categories to promote a common understanding of situation, existing information and information gaps, as well as providing an index of programmatic, resource and other climate and landscape related information for GNLCC. The synthesis includes: the GNLCC Resource Directory (organizations and initiatives); climate and ecological response (what does existing and projected climate information say and what are expected ecological effects); and monitoring (who is monitoring what).FY2011Objectives:Provide a Framework from which to organize the various monitoring and evaluation efforts. Included are key monitoring and evaluation questions...

Landscape simulation modeling will be used to develop detailed management guidelines for restoring and sustaining whitebark pine under future climates, accounting for the principal stressors that threaten its persistence (exotic disease infections, mountain pine beetles, and fire exclusion policies). We will build on existing work, including the 2012 publication A Range-Wide Restoration Strategy for Whitebark Pine Forests and existing simulation areas within critical whitebark pine habitat. This project will create a robust and trans-boundary set of management tools for creating resistant and resilient whitebark pine forests within the Rocky Mountains, USA and Canada.FY2013Objectives:We propose to use FireBGCv2...

Proposed work will monitor for five years vegetation, fuels, wildlife, insects, and weather at 10 Sagebrush Steppe Treatment Evaluation Project (SageSTEP) sites, all of which have been treated to reduce either juniper encroachment (woodland sites) or cheatgrass invasion (sagebrush/cheatgrass sites). Monitoring of treatment response over the long term will lead to a better understanding of the extent to which managers can manipulate vegetation, fuels, and wildlife habitat in the context of climate change.FY2010Objectives:1) assess longterm trajectories in populations of key plant and animal species, and link these trajectories to management restoration treatments and to climate change; 2) measure total ecosystem...
We will develop an approach to identify fire refugia in Rocky Mountain ecosystems of the U.S. and Canada then test the function of refugia for biodiversity conservation under current and future climate/fire scenarios. Our products will be designed to inform decision-making in land/easement acquisition, identification of critical areas for maintaining landscape and process connectivity/permeability, and extension of the temporal context for spatial conservation decision making. The approach will be testable for transferability to other locations and ecosystems.FY2013Objectives:The proposed project will provide a science application for focused resource conservation by developing and testing the concept of refugia...

This project will support the design and development of a large-scale aquatics monitoring program across 1.5 million acres of the Crown of the Continent, as part of a 10-year, landscape-level restoration project established and funded by the U.S. Forest Service in 2010. The Forest Service has directed each of ten Cooperative Forest Landscape Restoration Program projects to develop and implement a large-scale monitoring program to inventory current resource conditions and facilitate the short- and long-term evaluation of the effectiveness of restoration projects to inform future management strategies and actions: the work proposed here would address significant challenges associated with maintaining or improving...

Datasets/Database,
Existing climate change science and guidance for restoring and maintaining whitebark pine forests will be evaluated using landscape simulation modeling to inform implementation of the Greater Yellowstone Coordinating Committee (GYCC) Whitebark Pine (WBP) subcommittees WBP Strategy. We will design a no constraints management scenario based on the GYCC WBP Strategy and 2015 publication Restoring whitebark pine ecosystems in the face of climate change and incorporating the latest projections of future climate suitability for WBP and other landscape stressors (mountain pine beetles, competing species, wildland fire). We will use the landscape simulation model FireBGCv2 to simulate interactions of future climate, mountain...

Goal 2: Conserve landscape connectivity,
The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) has been working collaboratively with the Bureau of Land Management and US Forest Service (USFS) to inventory and map current and potential distributions of plant communities which support species of cultural concern on federal lands. This project will continue this collaborative effort to develop plant community information and GIS datasets about three culturally important plant species located throughout the Columbia basin which are impacted by climate change, land use, invasive species, and increased incidence and severity of fire. We will help initiate determination of historical, current and likely future distribution and productivity in the...

Funding supports a multiyear initiative entitled Crown of the Continent Landscapes Analysis/Ecological Indicators Project. The work is designed to focus on issues on transboundary data integration and synthesis, habitatconnectivity analysis for grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) and other key wildlife species, and outreach programs aimed at disseminating knowledge, information products, and geospatial tools arising out of this work to the extensive network of Crown Managers Partnership (CMP) and GNLCC collaborators.FY2010Objectives:The monitoring strategy will focus on the development and acquisition of geospatial datasets from remote sensing and other GIS sources designed to track changes in habitats and human footprint...
