The U.S. Virgin Islands 2007 land cover, created as part of the USVIGAP analysis project supported by the USGS, is a forty-nine class land cover classification. The USVIGAP land cover is based primarily on the unsupervised classification of five Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) Advanced Land Imager (ALI) scenes acquired in 2007. The ALI scenes were processed, segmented into geoclimatic zones and classified individually. ASTER and Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery from 2008 and 2009 were used to complete areas of no data resulting from cloud and cloud shadow in the initial ALI classification. The land cover was created through the use of the spectral information derived from the satellite imagery and ancillary data such as geology,...

This dataset shows modelled habitat suitability for the American Beaver (Castor canadensis) under current and projected future conditions. We built habitat suitability models for 237 bird, 117 mammal, and 12 amphibian species. Species were chosen for inclusion in the study based on a simple set of criteria. For a species to be included in the study, it had to be primarily associated with terrestrial habitats, have a digital map of its current range, and have some portion of its current distribution intersect with the study area extent. In addition, we restricted the list of species used in the study to those for which a well-performing continental-scale model could be built. Digital species range maps were converted...

Surveys for immature life stages of the Samoan swallowtail butterfly (Papilio godeffroyi) were conducted on 117 individually marked host trees (Micromelum minutum) in eight forest stands on Tutuila Island, American Samoa, at approximately monthly intervals during 2013-2014. The eight stands were mostly in or adjacent to the National Park of American Samoa (NPSA), but one stand was sampled near the western tip of Tutuila, outside NPSA. An additional 74 host trees were assessed for phenological status in the eight stands but were not surveyed for Papilio. This dataset contains information on the area and number of host trees surveyed for Papilio or phenology in each stand.

This data product contains estimates of habitat quality for pronghorn. The analysis area was a 236,000 square kilometers that encompassed the Navajo Nation, which includes portions of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. The estimates of habitat quality were created with spatially explicit habitat variables and either an expert-based linear combination process (for mountain lion and mule deer) or a generalized linear mixed model-based estimation that used radio-collar telemetry data (for desert bighorn sheep, black bear, and pronghorn; collected between 2005-2011). Habitat variables varied among species but included vegetation type, terrain ruggedness, topographic position index (TPI), road density, distance to water,...

Bottomlands of large rivers within the Mississippi River Basin. Derived by combining the Mississippi alluvial plain with natural floodplains created by the Scientific Assessment and Strategy Team for the Upper Mississippi, and statewide floodplain coverages where available. While the Mississippi alluvial plain is not entirely bottomland (e.g. Crowley's Ridge), excluding these non-bottomland areas from analysis would exclude opportunities to expand existing forest patches and enhance connectivity. NOTE: Floodplain coverage in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri is incomplete due to incomplete data availability as of October 2016.

This dataset is a component of a complete package of products from the Connect the Connecticut project. Connect the Connecticut is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conserving the Connecticut River Watershed for future generations, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural ecosystems they inhabit. Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset represents the climate response index for American Woodcock. Climate response is one of several different measures of landscape capability that reflect different decisions (or assumptions) regarding how to incorporate current versus future land use and climate changes. The climate response...

Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset depicts the potential capability of the landscape throughout the CT River Watershed to provide habitat for American black bear based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010. All locations are scored on a scale from 0 to 1, with a value of 0 indicating no capacity to...

This dataset represents beach scraping after Hurricane Sandy. These data are part of a broader project Inventory of Habitat Modifications to Tidal Inlets and Sandy Oceanfront Beaches in the U.S. Atlantic Coast Breeding Range of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) as of 2015: Maine to North Carolina. Beach scraping modified sandy beach habitat in each of the states within the U.S. Atlantic Coast breeding range of the piping plover during the three years after Hurricane Sandy. The beaches of the Peconic Estuary of New York were the least modified by beach scraping, with only 0.02 miles (0.03 km) of sandy beach habitat modified by beach scraping between 2012 and 2015. Less than 1 mile (1.6 km) of sandy beach habitat...

This dataset represents beach armor after Hurricane Sandy, including outfalls and proposed sites. The total length of oceanfront shoreline between Georgetown, ME, and the North Carolina-South Carolina boundary that has been armored is at least 476.81 miles (767.35 km; 27% of the total shoreline length). This assessment is a minimum number because some structures are buried and not visible in aerial imagery; in addition, historical records or inventories of hard stabilization...

This dataset consists of long-term (~65 years) shoreline change rates for the north coast of Alaska between Point Barrow and Icy Cape. Rate calculations were computed within a GIS using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 4.3, an ArcGIS extension developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Long-term rates of shoreline change were calculated using a linear regression rate-of-change method based on available shoreline data between 1947 and 2012. A reference baseline was used as the originating point for the orthogonal transects cast by the DSAS software. The transects intersect each shoreline establishing measurement points, which are then used to calculate long-term rates.

This dataset includes shorelines from 65 years ranging from 1947 to 2012 for the north coast of Alaska between the Colville River and Point Barrow. Shorelines were compiled from topographic survey sheets (T-sheets; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)), aerial orthophotographs (U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and lidar elevation data(USGS). Historical shoreline positions serve as easily understood features that can be used to describe the movement of beaches through time. These data are used to calculate rates of shoreline change for the U.S. Geological Survey's National Assessment of Shoreline Change Project. Rates of long-term and short-term...

Geochemical analysis of carbonate rock samples collected from seep fields on the RB1903 and AT41 research expeditions in the U.S. Mid- and South Atlantic. Samples were collected as a fingerprint to past hydrocarbon seep activity, fluid source, and depositional environment.

FY2014There is increasing interest in climate change adaptation, particularly since the release of the Presidents Executive Order on Climate Preparedness in November, 2013, yet many field staff remain uncertain how to put adaptation into practice. Our goal with this project is to bridge the gap between the wealth of high-level climate adaptation guidance and the field staff who carry out specific regulatory processes, specifically Habitat Conservation Plans. Following best practices from the literature on linking science and management, we will begin with a focus on what people do rather than on the climate science. We will map the current HCP development and approval process in Region 8, identify where and how...

This dataset represents the probability of occurrence of brook trout in headwater creeks based on current habitat and climate conditions. Brook trout are a representative species for cool/cold headwater creeks. This layer was derived from a model developed by Ben Letcher and associates at the USGS...
