The Kittlitz’s Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris) is a small, non-colonial seabird endemic to marine waters of Alaska and eastern Russia that may have experienced significant population decline in recent decades, in part because of low reproductive success and terrestrial threats. Although recent studies have shed new light on Kittlitz’s Murrelet nesting habitat in a few discrete areas, the location and extent of other possible nesting areas throughout most of its range remains unclear. The elk (Cervus canadensis) of the Pueblo of Santa Ana herd are primarily non-migratory and located northeast of U.S. Route 550 and south of the Jemez Mountains. The winter range is dominated by black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda), galleta (Pleuraphis jamesii), mesa dropseed (Sporobolus flexuosus), and fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens), with pinyon-juniper woodlands and ponderosa pine forests dominating the higher elevation slopes of the Jemez Mountains. Groundwater is an important source of drinking and irrigation water throughout Idaho, and groundwater quality is monitored by various Federal, State, and local agencies. The historical, multi-agency records of groundwater quality include a valuable dataset that has yet to be compiled or analyzed on a statewide level. The purpose of this study is to combine groundwater-quality data from multiple sources into a single database, to summarize this dataset, and to perform bulk analyses to reveal spatial and temporal patterns of water quality throughout Idaho. A quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay was developed to detect nuclear inclusion X (NIX) in Pacific razor clams, and assay specificity was confirmed by chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH). Both tests were applied to evaluate NIX infections in wild Pacific razor clams collected during spring 2019. Consistent with results from earlier histopathological assessments, qPCR and CISH indicated 100% prevalence in razor clams from two Washington beaches and 0% prevalence from two Alaskan beaches.

The mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) of the Jemez Springs herd winter in the southwestern Jemez Mountains, south and east of the town of Jemez Springs. The area has experienced two severe wildfires, the Las Conchas and Thompson Ridge fires, within the last decade, burning a total of 180,555 acres. The data used in this report was collected to examine the responses of mule deer to these wildfires and forest restoration treatments. The winter range is located among the foothills of the Jemez Mountains, consisting primarily of pinyon-juniper woodlands. The Blueprint 2.0 Development Process is a final report that explains in detail how the Conservation Blueprint was created. It first provides an overview of the South Atlantic LCC and the Blueprint framework, then combines the metadata available on the Conservation Planning Atlas for all ecosystem maps, ecosystem indicators, ecosystem scores, corridors, and final Blueprint priorities. Rural Arctic communities are vulnerable to climate change and residents seek adaptive strategies that will protect public health. In the Inupiat community of Selawik, climate change is impacting the weather, land, river, wildlife, plants, and the lives of the people who live there. This report identifies health concerns related to food and water security and community infrastructure. This report documents these issues as described by the local people and interpreted through the lens of public health. It is the fifth report in a series describing climate change in Northwest Alaska.
The Bristol Bay region represents an area of transition between the maritime climate of the southern coast and the continental climate of the Interior and Copper River Basin. These regions are largely protected by mountains areas and do not have a strong maritime influence. Temperatures are moderate and sea ice does form in the Bristol Bay but complete freeze-up of these waterways is not common. Low winter temperatures are below 0 degrees F with events below -20F.
