Marine Mammal data: assessed, combined and converted from seasonal species sightings into 10-minute squares. Individual grids were then multiplied by 1000 and divided by seasonal effort grids previously generated by the U.S. Navy. The resulting sightings per unit effort (SPUE) grids were used to identify important areas within the Ecoregion for each species.
Point nesting data, Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) importance and nesting areas and sightings per unit effort (SPUE) for the three species of turtles - Green sea turtle, Leatherback turtle, and Loggerhead turtle.

The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and socio-economic spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

The Florida Marine Blueprint V. 2 depicts marine and estuarine priorities based on combined natural resource priorities, providing guidance for efficient and effective conservation planning and implementation. The FLMB Version 2 used six natural resource datasets to prioritize area of natural habitats in Florida’s EEZ extent. The datasets comprised 19 separate spatial feature layers acquired through a variety of monitoring and management organizations. Spatial layers represent vital conservation and/or management data, such as endangered and threatened species (i.e., critical habitat), overall species richness in estuarine habitats, commercially and recreationally important species (i.e., essential fish habitat),...

This EnviroAtlas web service supports research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas). The Food, Fuel, and Materials category in this web service includes layers illustrating the ecosystems and natural resources that provide or support the production of food, fuel, or other materials, the need or demand for these items, the impacts associated with their presence and accessibility, and factors that place stress on the natural environment's capability to provide these benefits. EnviroAtlas allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the conterminous United States. Additional descriptive...

The Towboat reserves were put in place at the request of the Council of Marine Carriers (CMC) to protect harbours along the BC Coast to ensure harbours of refuge (temporary shelter during inclement weather or when waiting for favorable tides) remained available for commercial marine traffic - eg. tugs towing booms and barges up and down the coast. These harbours needed to be of adequate size, be located along commercial navigation routes and provide adequate shelter to accommodate the tug and the load being towed. Certain harbours were identified as critical harbours because they meet the size, location and shelter criteria required. To ensure the harbour remains available as a harbour refuge, shoreline development...

Atlantic Coastal Fish Habitat Partnership (ACFHP) is currently working on a project with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore through a grant from the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council to study the relationship between black sea bass abundance and habitat characteristics in the Mid-Atlantic Bight. Data are being collected on black sea bass abundance, stomach contents, and position in the food web, as well as characteristics of the habitats black sea bass are associated with: bottom type, whether a reef is natural or artificial, and the plants, animals, and algae attached to each habitat. This work will lead to a better understand of the importance of habitat and prey community structure on black sea bass...
We estimated global cyanobacterial biomass in the main reservoirs of cyanobacteria on Earth: marine and freshwater plankton, arid land soil crusts, and endoliths. Estimates were based on typical population density values as measured during our research, or as obtained from literature surveys, which were then coupled with data on global geographical area coverage. Among the marine plankton, the global biomass of Prochlorococcus reaches 120 × 10^12 grams of carbon (g C), and that of Synechoccus some 43 × 10^12 g C. This makes Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, in that order, the most abundant cyanobacteria on Earth. Tropical marine blooms of Trichodesmium account for an additional 10 × 10^12 g C worldwide. In terrestrial...

Accruate mapping of tidal wetlands is vital for effective conservation and restoration of these valued habitats, and good mapping is key to strategic planning for coastal resilience. Tidal wetlands are defined by regular inundation by the tides; therefore, mapping of tidal wetlands should be based on knowledge of tidal water levels and the land areas inundated by the tides. We developed this tidal wetland mapping following that principle. Briefly, we used a method developed in Oregon that combines NOAA’s extreme water level models with high-resolution LIDAR digital elevation models (DEMs) to map areas subject to tidal inundation. We refined the mapping using additional data sources such as the National Wetland...

This report provides detailed (1:63,360-scale) mapping of the Tanana A-1 and A-2 quadrangles (500 square miles; equivalent to eight 7.5-minute quadrangles). The area is part of the Manley Hot Springs-Tofty mining districts and adjacent to the Rampart mining district to the south of the Tanana B-1 Quadrangle. This report includes detailed bedrock, surficial, structural, and stratigraphic data. Based on the resulting geologic maps, field investigations, and laboratory materials analyses, the report also includes derivative maps of geologic construction materials and geologic hazards. The Tanana A-1 and A-2 Quadrangles and surrounding area comprise several isolated mountainous ridges in the western Yukon-Tanana Upland...
