In Hawai‘i and other oceanic islands with few native land mammals, black rats (Rattus rattus) are among the most damaging invasive vertebrate species to native forest bird populations and habitats, due to their arboreal behavior and generalist foraging habitats and habitat use. This is a selected data set used to assess the impacts of rodenticide treatment on black rat (Rattus rattus) abundance within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO). The key objective was to identify rat abundance before and after rodenticide treatment, using paired non-treatment and treatment plots at high elevation (1700-1830m) and low elevation (1220-1340 m). This dataset includes the results of a mark recapture study that took place within...

This data release contains data discussed in its larger work citation (Symstad et al., 2017, Climate Risk Management 17:78-91, Associated Item at right). "ClimateComparisonData.csv" contains summary metrics of six climate projections used as climate input for quantitative simulations of hydrologic and ecological responses to climate change at Wind Cave National Park (WCNP) and the same summary metrics for 38 other climate projections available at the time that these simulations were done. "HydroData.csv" contains mean annual streamflow of a stream in WCNP and mean annual hydraulic head of a subterranean lake in Wind Cave as simulated by the rainfall-response aquifer and watershed flow (RRAWFLOW) model for two climate...

In 2007, a phase shift from corals to corallimorpharians (CM) was documented at Palmyra Atoll, Line Islands, centered around a shipwreck. Subsequent surveys revealed CM to be overgrowing the reef benthos, including corals and coralline algae, potentially placing coral ecosystems in the atoll at risk. This prompted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the lead management agency of the atoll, to remove the shipwreck. Subsequent surveys showed reversal of spread of CM around the ship impact site. We explain patterns of spread of the CM in terms of life history and local currents and show with a pilot study that pulverized bleach may be an effective tool to eradicate CM on a local scale. If applied strategically, particularly...
This ArcGIS shapefile shows the known locations of beaver activity (including beaver chews, lodges, and dams) in the Tualatin Basin. USGS was intending to collect information about the locations of beaver dams. Often, the GPS coordinates of dams were not known, but the beaver-affected areas were known. The information about locations with beaver activity was generated by multiple local agencies, groups, and organizations. The local sources had identified the beaver activity locations between 2013 and 2016. USGS worked with these local sources to combine all data into one inventory.

Wild insect pollination has significant positive effects on pollinator-dependent crop production. While managed honeybees are often used to provide pollination to pollinator-dependent crops, visits by wild insect pollinators have been shown to be more effective in increasing fruit set than managed pollinators, and wild insect pollination increases fruit set even when managed pollinator visitation is high (Garibaldi et al. 2013). The total value of the pollination services provided by wild, native insects has been estimated at $3.07 billion annually (2003 dollars) in the United States (Losey & Vaughan 2006). To assess the spatial distribution of potential wild insect pollination, we mapped the supply of potential...

Insects with morphologically different life stages can face a time tradeoff between foraging and egg-laying behavior when larval and adult resources are spatially segregated. Understanding this tradeoff in the Karner blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) can inform resource management for this federally endangered species under changing resource distribution and availability. We collected data on adult butterfly densities, larval (wild blue lupine, Lupinus perennis) and adult (nectaring plants) resource densities, and adult resource use. We defined “resource use” as anytime a butterfly was found (resting, crawling, feeding, laying eggs, mating) on a resource. Data were collected in eight habitat patches (10...

This data release is currently being revised, and is currently unavailable. This data set includes mosaicked aerial photographs for the Riverine Sand Mining/Scofield Island Restoration (BA-40) project for 2014. This data is used as a basemap habitat classification. If repeated, it can also serve as a visual tool for project managers to help them identify any obvious problems or land loss within their project boundary. To better evaluate the effectiveness of restoration efforts, a habitat classification was performed on specific projects to help assess landscape changes.

This dataset contains information regarding the acreages of land currently (as of 2004) enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) distributed by county and the year the CRP contract was initiated (1987-2004, excluding 1994 and 1995). Additionally, it contains total acreages of land enrolled in the CRP distributed by county and the contract year (1987-2003). USDA Farm Service Agency's (FSA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary program available to agricultural producers to help them safeguard environmentally sensitive land. Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resource-conserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat. In return, FSA...

Clean water is important for a variety of uses, including drinking, recreation, and as habitat for aquatic species. Nonpoint-source pollution, such as nutrients, sediment, and pesticides from agricultural runoff, is a major cause of impaired water quality in the United States . Vegetation and soil in natural land cover help to remove pollutants from runoff water before it reaches streams and other waterways by slowing water flow and physically trapping sediment. To assess the spatial distribution of water purification potential in the southeastern United States, we mapped the demand for purification as the total area of agricultural land and the supply of natural land cover in the flowpath over which water moves...

Coastal wetland ecosystems are expected to migrate landward in response to accelerated sea-level rise. However, due to differences in topography and coastal urbanization extent, estuaries vary in their ability to accommodate wetland migration. The landward movement of wetlands requires suitable conditions, such as a gradual slope and land free of urban development. Urban barriers can constrain migration and result in wetland loss (coastal squeeze). For future-focused conservation planning purposes, there is a pressing need to quantify and compare the potential for wetland landward movement and coastal squeeze. For 41 estuaries in the northern Gulf of Mexico (i.e., the USA gulf coast), we quantified and compared...

These data were compiled to provide seed transfer and native plant materials development guidance to managers and practitioners across the Colorado Plateau and in adjacent regions. This data release contains empirical seed transfer zones derived from molecular genetic data for Cleome serrulata (syn. Peritoma serrulata), Heliomeris multiflora, and Astragalus lonchocarpus. These species show distinct population structure (i.e., genetic differentiation) across their ranges; as such, seed transfer zones reflect both patterns of genetic differentiation and information on each species' unique adaptations to climatic gradients. These shapefile data may support successful restoration outcomes if, for example, seed transfer...

We evaluated the nesting response of Hawai‘i ‘Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis; Monarchidae), a generalist insectivore, to the removal of black rats using rodenticide in a before-after-control-impact study in high and low, mesic montane habitat recovering from long-term damage from introduced ungulates and weeds. We monitored nesting activity during 2015–2016 before applying diphacinone bait in 2017 to remove rats from two 700 x 700-m treatment plots that were paired with two non-treatment plots. We continued monitoring through July 2017. This data set includes a summarized account of Elepaio nests during the 2015, 2016, and 2017 breeding seasons. There is a unique identifier for each nest ('NestID '), along with...
