A limited amount of valid scientific information about global climate change and its detrimental impacts has reached the public and exerted a positive impact on the public policy process or future planning for adaptation and mitigation. This project was designed to address this limitation by bringing together expertise in the social and communication sciences from targeted academic institutions affiliated with the Department of the Interior’s Climate Science Centers (CSCs) through a workshop. The project team brought together expertise in the social and communication sciences from targeted academic institutions, particularly experts and scholars who are affiliated with the nation’s CSCs, by means of an invited...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. A point coverage was created from the 1980 Master Area Reference File (MARF) of the U.S. Census Bureay. Each point represents the center of a census tract, though some tracts were split. A 1980 population is associated with each point. Populations for 1970, 1982, 1984, and 1985 were inferred from county population data.

This collection of files contains temperature data files (.ttd files) downloaded directly from Tiny Tag devices, as well exported temperature data as .csv files for each nest monitored with Tiny Tags by year. File names include Tiny Tag number, site, year, and nest ID..ttd files can be viewed using Tinytag Explorer. Note, however, that the times displayed by Tinytag Explorer are calculated when the data is displayed and depend on the daylight saving settings of the PC at that time. For example, if a .ttd file is opened before and after DST settings change, then all times displayed by Tinytag Explorer will go forward or back. All .csv files were exported using the Tinytag Explorer during the same daylight savings...

Collection of photographs taken during PRISM field work on the Yukon Delta. Photos include those taken of habitat within rapid survey plots (usually taken at the northwest corner of the rapid survey plot boundary), other photos taken within survey plots, completed datasheets, and by crew members.Directories include YKD_PRISM_plot_photos, YKD_PRISM_datasheet_photos, YKD_PRISM_other_plot_photos, and YKD_PRISM_crew_photos.A portion of these data are available on ServCat (https://ecos.fws.gov/ServCat/Reference/Profile/57583).Much of these data have been published in Lyons, J.E., S.C. The Northwest Climate Conference (formerly called the Pacific Northwest Climate Science Conference) is the premier climate science event for the region, providing a forum for researchers and practitioners to share scientific results and discuss challenges and solutions related to the impacts of climate change on people, natural resources, and infrastructure in the Northwest. Conference participants include policy- and decision-makers, resource managers, and scientists from academia, public agencies, sovereign tribal nations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. More information can be found at the conference website: http://pnwclimateconference.org. The Second Annual Pacific Northwest Climate...
Snowshoe hare populations fluctuate over a period of several years and are thought to send the cats on migration routes in what’s known as the “travelling wave” theory. In a changing boreal region, scientists want to know where and how lynx move across the landscape to better understand how the larger system is connected.Researchers will build on on-going research in national wildlife refuges by placing satellite tracking collars on cats to better understand the dynamics across the region. Isotypes in the cats’ teeth as well as genetic markers give more clues about lynx movement. This project involves collaboration with local trappers. The project is a collaboration among the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Yukon...

This file provides data pertaining to shorebird nests found on intensive plots. Each record pertains to a given nest, and contains information on species, location, number of eggs, chronology, and productivity.A portion of these data are available on ServCat (https://ecos.fws.gov/ServCat/Reference/Profile/57583).Much of these data have been published in Lyons, J.E., S.C. Our primary goal for this dataset was to obtain the population and number of dwellings at the finest common scale possible. Because the Canadian government first began to collect the pertinent census information at our desired scale in 2006, we used 2006 as the baseline for this product on the Canadian CCE. However, because (1) U.S. Census takes place every 10 years, and (2) our desired baseline date for the protocol was 2000, the census 2000 blocks were used on the U.S. CCE. This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the...

This dataset explores the physical reality of the population growth from 2005 to 2060 without changes to existing land use policy or gross urban density. The land use suitability analysis displayed in this dataset was performed by the GeoPlan Center for 1000 Friends of Florida and is a companion study to "A Time for Leadership: Growth Management and Florida 2060" prepared for 1000 Friends of Florida by researchers at Georgia Tech's Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development. GeoPlan's project was undertaken using relatively straightforward geographic information systems (GIS) suitability analysis constructed on a foundation of clearly articulated assumptions. The three key assumptions were: 1)...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set represents 2000 population density by block group as a 100-m grid using data from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing. The demographic data is from CensusCD 2000 Short Form Blocks published by GeoLytics, E. Brunswick, NJ, which uses the 2000 Census Summary File 1 (SF 1). Grid cell values represent population density in people per square kilometer multiplied by 10 so that the data could be stored as integer.

This dataset includes a polygon vector shapefile illustrating the location of rapid and intensive survey plots surveyed on the Yukon Delta as part of the Program for Regional and International Shorebird Monitoring (PRISM). This dataset provides the geographical location of survey plots that can be linked to the data collected in the field via the PlotID field.A portion of these data are available on ServCat (https://ecos.fws.gov/ServCat/Reference/Profile/57583).Much of these data have been published in Lyons, J.E., S.C. This file provides information on shorebirds observed during 10-minutes point counts including date and time, location, weather information, and shorebird observations. These data do not represent all locations where specific avian species may be present, as surveys only occurred in discrete survey plots. Additionally, individual birds may have went undetected within survey plots, as detectability was likely less than 100%, and is a function of many variables, including differences in species, habitat, time-of-year, weather conditions, survey effort, and individual surveyor. The data providers have invested considerable effort in QA/QC, but it is possible that undetected errors remain. It is strongly recommended...

The primary objective of this project was to monitor the growth of shorebird chicks by recapturing them from hatch to fledgling in relation to food abundance and weather conditions. In 2014 and 2015, we attempted to estimate the impacts of trophic mismatch by experimentally creating late hatched broods by refrigerating eggs to delay hatch. Transmitters were then attached to adults and chicks to follow and recapture chick in order to estimate growth rates and survival (see annual protocol documents for further information).Information for the Utqiagvik chick monitoring study were obtained concurrently with information obtained for the Utqiagvik shorebird project and information on chicks and nests included in these...

The Ecological Flows (Ecoflows) Program within the Water Mission Area (WMA) provides the data and science needed to develop and quantify relations between water availability and biological responses through improving the WMA’s ability to predict key ecological outcomes of human activities on the landscape. Program sub-objectives include: developing a comprehensive understanding of the interactions among aquatic ecosystems, hydrology, and hydrochemistry, developing and applying models to predict potential effects of changes in population, land use, climate, and management practices upon future water availability, and predicting the availability of impaired water resources and the effects of using these water sources...
