Abstract The Yukon River Drainage Fisheries Association (YRDFA) conducted a study to collect and utilize traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) held by people living in the villages along the Yukon River as an attempt to better understand changing salmon runs. The study took place during the summers of 2001 and 2002. Twenty-nine participants were interviewed in the four Yukon River villages of Alakanuk, Saint Mary’s, Holy Cross and Nulato. We collected information on local observations of salmon lifecycles, abundance, environmental change and habitat. Subsistence exists alongside other important uses of fish and game in Alaska, including commercial fishing, sport fishing, personal use fishing, and general hunting. The Gwich'in consume traditional country foods as a main staple of their diet. Due to concerns from the Gwich'in with] regards to contaminants in the food chain, the Gwich'in Community Liaison (GCL) position was established. This position enabled the Gwich'in to be a member of and participate in research programs established by the Northern Contaminants Program (NCP). The health of caribou (Rangifer tarandus ) is impacted by multiple risk factors, which may affect availability of caribou for consumption. From analysis of secondary dietary intake data, consuming caribou was found to be positively related to measures of diet quality--caloric intake and dietary diversity score. Other country foods, beef, or pork may be substituted for caribou with increases in opportunity cost and out-of-pocket costs for obtaining caribou. Caribou consumption levels are predicted to vary across and within regions. This thesis addressed how Alaska Natives of the Iliamna Lake region have practiced subsistence and indigenous religious traditions to live sustainably in their local environments and how their ways of living have been practiced from the 1960s to 2013. ABSTRACT. Lightning and fire characteristics within the Northwest Territories (NWT) jurisdiction of the Mackenzie Basin between 1994 and 1999 are examined using data from the lightning detection network operating in the NWT and from the national Large Fire Database maintained by the Canadian Forest Service. The convective storm season with associated lightning activity over this region is short hut intense, with a strong peak in cloud-to-ground lightning during July. The maximum area of lightning activity is influenced by local moisture sources and by topography. Pollen, spores, and dinoflagellate cysts are used with the modern analog technique (MAT) to provide paleoclimate reconstructions for terrestrial and marine environments in northeastern North America. Multivariate analysis of marine and nearby terrestrial pollen sequences from Hudson Bay, Labrador and the St. Lawrence, differentiate tundra, boreal and deciduous forest assemblages in time and space. These three regions had differing climate histories with respect to deglaciation and air mass boundaries. Through a process of participatory mapping, this research assessed the impacts of the 1984 change in Alaska fire policy from one of exclusion to one of management on Native land use in the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge. Findings suggest that while the change in policy has had little measurable effect on community land use the continued suppression of fire on Native owned lands is having a direct impact on the current availability of wildlife resources to the point of necessitating territorial expansion among Native resource users.
