This child data release includes RGB (red-green-blue) videos acquired from an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) during a tracer experiment performed on the Missouri River near Columbia, Missouri, on May 5, 2021. One of the primary goals of this tracer experiment was to assess the feasibility of inferring concentrations of a visible dye (Rhodamine WT) from various types of remotely sensed data in a large, highly turbid natural river channel. Previous research on remote sensing of tracer dye concentrations has focused on clear-flowing streams, but the Missouri River is much more turbid. As a result, the effect of the dye on the reflectance of the water could be obscured by the effects of suspended sediment on reflectance....

Field measurements of flow velocity were acquired from a reach of the Salcha River in Alaska, August 31, 2018, to support research on estimating surface flow velocities from remotely sensed data via particle image velocimetry (PIV). The velocity measurements included in this data release were obtained using a TRDI RiverRay acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed from a boat with an outboard motor. This data release provides depth-averaged flow velocities derived from the raw ADCP data using the TRDI WinRiver II processing software. The spatial location of each velocity measurement was obtained using a differential GPS included as part of the RiverRay instrument package. The map projection and datum...

This data release consists of a sequence of optical images extracted from a high frame rate video and used to derive remotely sensed estimates of surface flow velocity via particle image velocimetry (PIV). These data were acquired from the Tanana River near Nenana, Alaska, on July 24, 2019, along with field measurements of flow velocity used to assess the accuracy of image-derived velocity estimates. The images were obtained using a Zenmuse X5 video camera deployed within a Meeker mount attached to the nose of a Robinson R44 helicopter. The original video was recorded at 30 frames per second while the helicopter hovered in a fixed location approximately 600 m above the river, but the image sequence was extracted...

This data release includes field spectra, UAS-based RGB videos, and digital orthophotography acquired from a manned fixed-wing aircraft, as well as in situ measurements of turbidity and Rhodamine WT dye concentration acquired during a tracer experiment performed on the Missouri River near Columbia, Missouri, on May 5, 2021. This data release consists of a sequence of high spatial resolution optical images used to derive remotely sensed estimates of surface flow velocity via particle image velocimetry (PIV). These data were acquired from the Salcha River in Alaska on August 31, 2018, along with field measurements of flow velocity used to assess the accuracy of image-derived velocity estimates. The images were obtained using a Hasselblad A6D-100C 100 megapixel digital mapping camera deployed within a pod mounted on the landing gear of a Robinson R44 helicopter. Image sequences were acquired at a frame rate of 1 per second (1 Hz) while the helicopter hovered in a fixed location approximately 200 m above the river. Also within the pod...
The practice of fire suppression across the western United States over the past century has led to dense forests, and when coupled with drought has contributed to an increase in large and destructive wildfires. Forest management efforts aimed at reducing flammable fuels through various fuel treatments can help to restore frequent fire regimes and increase forest resilience. Our research examines how different fuel treatments influenced burn severity and post-fire vegetative stand dynamics on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, in east-central Arizona, U.S.A. Our methods included the use of multitemporal remote sensing data and cloud computing to evaluate burn severity and post-fire vegetation conditions as well as...

Field measurements of water depth were acquired from a reach of the Colorado River near Lees Ferry, Arizona, March16-18, 2021, to support research on remote sensing of water depth from satellite images. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained along a series of cross-sections using a SonTek RiverSurveyor M9 acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed from a boat. The spatial location of each measurement was obtained using a differential GPS included as part of the RiverSurveyor M9 ADCP instrument package. The map projection and datum for these data are UTM Zone 12S and WGS84, respectively. The USGS Qrev software program was used to ingest and process the raw ADCP data. The Qrev data...

Field measurements of water depth were acquired from a reach of the American River at Sailor Bar, near Fair Oaks, California, October 19-21, 2020, to support research on remote sensing of water depth from satellite images. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained via two different methods: 1) By wading the shallow channel margins with RTK GPS receivers and measuring water surface elevations along the water's edge and bed elevations within the channel; depths were calculated by subtracting bed elevations from the nearest water surface elevation. 2) For the deeper areas representing most of the channel, depths were recorded along a series of cross-sections by a SonTek RiverSurveyor S5 acoustic...
