Flow alteration – from new and existing water supply projects, increased urbanization, and drought conditions – is a pervasive threat to aquatic wildlife throughout the Gulf Coast Prairie region. One species susceptible to this threat is Guadalupe Bass, an economically and ecologically important black bass species endemic to Texas. The area encompassing their range is projected to experience some of the highest population growth in Texas, placing increased demands on the aquifers and watersheds of this region. A previous GCP LCC Instream Flow project conducted by the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership (SARP) produced hypotheses about instream flow requirements of native aquatic species that need to be tested....

The Red River Stakeholder Engagement project’s primary objective was to uncover areas of concern for stakeholders who live, work, and play along the Red River Basin. It examined the complexity of the cultural-geographic landscape across the Red River Basin. By focusing on both the geographic and the cultural, we gain a better understanding of how individuals, communities, and organizations interact with the basin and with one another, how they arecurrently experiencing changes, and what they perceive a changing climate means for them. This cultural-geographic approach recognizes that stakeholders’ concerns, priorities, and actions likely vary across space-and also vary in their cultural significance. For example,...

Sampling Grassland habitats in Urban, Suburban and Rural areas of Central Texas using a modified GMIT protocol and Data Recorder Protocol provided a baseline of operations and tested various techniques and equipment prior to large-scale implementation. This 6-month effort combined the Urban Monarch project with testing field data collections techniques with those used by several partners (TPWD protocol) interested in determining best practices, tools, and methodologies for evaluating and monitoring habitat for monarchs, other pollinators, and grassland birds. Tablet data recorders were far superior to other recorders tested, and were also superior to cell phone applications. Several milkweed planted areas were established,...

Our focal species [FS] process and the surrogate species [SS] process as described in the guidance and workshops are similar in some respects and substantially different in others; particularly, the explicit objectives and process of the SS approach are significantly different that the current FS approach, although some of the products may happen to overlap because of some shared values and criteria. Not all FS selected by the GCP LCC Science Team may need to be commensurable with the SS expectations; some species may better fit the needs of other partners that may differ from the goals and approach of the SS process and of USFWS. Also, it is the understanding of many that draft SS guidance and workshop materials...

The Western Gulf Coast (WGC) provides valuable habitat for migratory and resident waterfowl. The mottled duck (Anas fulvigula), a resident species, is highly associated with coastal marsh habitats and relies on these areas for all of its life cycle needs. Habitat loss and degradation due to urban expansion and other human activities have raised concerns for the WGC mottled duck population. Although other threats such as sport harvest (Raftovich 2011), lead poisoning (Sanderson and Bellrose 1986), hybridization (McCracken et al. 2001), and predation (Stutzenbaker 1988, Moorman and Gray 1994, Durham and Afton 2003) may be additional factors in the overall decline of the population, the disappearance of suitable nesting...
A bare earth Digital Elevation Model (DEM) created from 2013 LiDAR LAS files for Wilson and Karnes counties in Texas. LiDAR data collection was funded by the Texas Water Development Board. LiDAR LAS files were acquired from Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS). The DEM is a dataset that depicts the topography of the bare earth surface (i.e. surface minus vegetation, buildings, powerlines, etc). This dataset was developled to be used in conjunction with the DSM to create a vegetation height surface (nDSM). The LAS point cloud was filtered to ground points only and the mean z value was calculated. A Digital Surface Model (DSM) created from 2013 LiDAR LAS files for Wilson and Karnes counties in Texas....

Climate, sea level rise, and urbanization are undergoing unprecedented levels of combined change and are expected to have large effects on natural resources — particularly along the Gulf of Mexico coastline (Gulf Coast). Management decisions to address these effects (i.e., adaptation) require an understanding of the relative vulnerability of various resources to these stressors. To meet this need, the four Landscape Conservation Cooperatives along the Gulf partnered with the Gulf of Mexico Alliance to conduct this Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment (GCVA). Vulnerability in this context incorporates the aspects of exposure and sensitivity to threats, coupled with the adaptive capacity to mitigate those threats....

The Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative needs seamless landcover data for the south-central United States. This information is essential for developing computer modeling tools related to the conservation of many terrestrial species and determining the quality of vegetation to assess current and desired conditions.

The Southeast Conservation Blueprint is a map of important areas for conservation and restoration across the Southeast and Caribbean. The Blueprint categories represent the level of value—high or medium—of healthy natural resources and their potential to benefit fish, wildlife and plants. The Blueprint is the primary product of the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy (SECAS). Through SECAS, diverse partners are working together to design and achieve a connected network of lands and waters that supports thriving fish and wildlife populations and improved quality of life for people across the southeastern United States and the Caribbean. This product record includes the following:Southeast Blueprint v3.0 dataset...

Habitat loss and degradation due to urban expansion and other human activities have raised concerns for the Western Gulf Coast Mottled Duck population. This species relies on tidal, palustrine, and agricultural wetlands as well as grasslands for all of its life cycle needs. The disappearance of suitable nesting and brood-rearing habitat is believed to be the primary factor associated with long-term population decline of the mottled duck. One of the first science projects initiated by the GCP LCC was development of a spatially-explicit Decision Support Tool (DST) to help guide conservation and management of habitat for breeding Mottled Ducks in coastal Louisiana and Texas. An important next step is evaluating the...

Oyster reefs provide environmental and economic services within the coastal regions of the United States. Mapping the extent of these reefs and analyzing their composition can be highly beneficial for oyster management and restoration projects. The objectives of this research project included examining the feasibility of the use of low-cost side-scanning sonar (LC-SSS) systems and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for mapping intertidal oyster reefs at selected sites within the Galveston Bay system, Texas. Two sites in Bastrop Bay and Bastrop Bayou complex were selected following defined criteria that included the existence of intertidal oyster reefs and no aviation restrictions on the operation of UAS.

The RESTORE Act (33 U.S. Code § 1321) directs 80% of Clean Water Act penalties from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (likely to be in the billions) to Gulf of Mexico restoration. Gulf partners profess a common goal of “restoring and protecting the natural resources…and economy of the Gulf Coast region”(Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council 2013:2), yet specific and explicit objectives that quantify what it means to actually achieve this goal remain undefined. Despite the presence of numerous conservation partnerships along the Gulf of Mexico, there is concern that this unprecedented opportunity will lack a coordinated response (NOAA RESTORE Act Science Program 2013). The success of the RESTORE Act will hinge...

There are critical needs for a nationwide compilation of reliable shoreline data. To meet these needs, the USGS has produced a comprehensive database of digital vector shorelines by compiling shoreline positions from pre-existing historical shoreline databases and by generating historical and modern shoreline data. Shorelines are compiled by state and generally correspond to one of four time periods: 1800s, 1920s-1930s, 1970s, and 1998-2002. Each shoreline may represent a compilation of data from one or more sources for one or more dates provided by one or more agencies. Details regarding source are provided in the ‘Data Quality Information’ section of this metadata report. Shoreline vectors derived from historic...

Rates of long-term and short-term shoreline change were generated in a GIS with the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 2.0, an ArcView extension developed by the USGS in cooperation with TPMC Environmental Services. The extension is designed to efficiently lead a user through the major steps of shoreline change analysis. This extension to ArcView contains three main components that define a baseline, generate orthogonal transects at a user-defined separation along the coast, and calculate rates of change (linear regression, endpoint rate, average of rates, average of endpoints, jackknife).

Habitat fragmentation and degradation are considered to be a leading causes of long-term population declines of Northern Bobwhites and many other species of grassland birds, such as Eastern Meadowlark. Research is needed to understand the factors causing habitat loss and fragmentation and to identify the areas that are high-probability candidates for successful restoration so that optimal decisions can be made. For example, uncertainty exists regarding the impacts of energy development activities or climate change that affect significant portions of wildlife populations in the GCP LCC. Furthermore, changing land ownership coupled with woody shrub and exotic grass encroachment have reduced the amount and quality...

The Ecological Mapping System (ECS) of Texas data set is a spatially explicit map that was completed in sections, starting in 2007 through 2013. Methods developed in Texas were extended and used to complete mapping in Oklahoma in 2014 and 2015, so maps are compatible across state borders and cover about 11% of the conterminous USA (Figure 1). Vegetation patterns change so maps from any given date are less accurate as time passes. Cost-efficient methods of producing map up-dates are needed to facilitate planning and management. For example, habitat for the Golden-cheeked Warbler (GCWA) in the Texas Hill Country is under threat from conversion to grasslands for grazing and to urban uses. Since the original maps for...
