FGDC Metadata templates for 5 product areas during 2019 have been created to programmatically generate metadata for the products that are produced daily or weekly on the FireDanger production system. Fire Danger products are broken into 5 product areas (Fire Potential Index, Large Fire Probability, Predictive Service Area (provisional), Relative Greenness (weekly), and NDVI Greenness (weekly)). Metadata files are provided for each raster in the 2019 product areas. A folder is also available containing the 5 metadata templates that were used to generate content for each product area. This dataset is the third (2013) in a series of three 2-kilometer land use land cover (LULC) time-periods datasets (1975, 2000, and 2013) aids in monitoring change in West Africa’s land resources (exception is Tchad at 4 kilometers). To monitor and map these changes, a 26 general LULC class system was used. The classification system that was developed was primarily inspired by the “Yangambi Classification” (Trochain, 1957). This fairly broad class system for LULC was used because the classes can be readily identified on Landsat satellite imagery. To support the modeling of storm-induced flooding, the USGS Coastal National Elevation Database (CoNED) Applications Project has created an integrated 1-meter topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM) for the Southern California Coast and Channel Islands. The Channel Islands are a chain of eight islands where years of isolation has created unique fauna, flora, and archeological resources. The archipelago extends for 160 miles (257 km) between San Miguel Island in the north and San Clemente Island in the south. Management and disturbances have significant effects on grassland forage production. When using satellite remote sensing to monitor climate impacts such as drought stress on annual forage production, minimizing these effects provides a clearer climate signal in the productivity data. Evaluation of historical water use in the Upper Rio Grande Basin (URGB) using Landsat-derived actual evapotranspiration (ETa) from 1986 to 2015 is presented here as a first of its kind study applying satellite observations for quantifying long term, basin-wide crop consumptive use at a large basin. The rich archive of Landsat imagery combined with the Operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) model was used to estimate and map ETa across the basin and over irrigated fields for historical characterization of water use dynamics. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) has been evaluated as one potential source for cellulosic biofuel feedstocks. Planting switchgrass in marginal croplands and waterway buffers can reduce soil erosion, improve water quality, and improve regional ecosystem services (i.e., it serves as a potential carbon sink). In this study, we integrated marginal croplands, highly erodible cropland buffers, and future crop expansion information to develop a switchgrass biofuel potential ensemble map for current and future croplands in eastern Nebraska.

These datasets provide early estimates of 2022 fractional cover for exotic annual grass (EAG) species and one native perennial grass species on a bi-weekly basis from May to early July. The EAG estimates are developed within one week of the latest satellite observation used for that version. Three ET datasets were generated to evaluate the potential integration of Landsat and Sentinel-2 data for improved ET mapping. The first ET dataset was generated by linear interpolation (Lint) of Landsat-based ET fraction (ETf) images of before and after the selected image dates. The second ET dataset was generated using the regular SSEBop approach using the Landsat image only (Lonly). Information on the spatio-temporal distribution of rainfall is critical for addressing water-related disasters, especially in the Middle East and North Africa's (MENA) arid to semi-arid regions. However, the availability of reliable rainfall datasets for most river basins is limited. In this study, we utilized observations from satellite-based rainfall data, in situ rain gauge observations, and rainfall climatology to determine the most suitable precipitation dataset in the MENA region. High interannual variability of forage production in semi-arid grasslands leads to uncertainties when livestock producers make decisions such as buying additional feed, relocating animals, or using flexible stocking. Within-season predictions of annual forage production (i.e., yearly production) can provide specific boundaries for producers to make these decisions with more information and possibly with higher confidence. Area estimates of land cover and land cover change are often based on reference class labels determined by analysts interpreting satellite imagery and aerial photography. Different interpreters may assign different reference class labels to the same sample unit. This dataset include land cover attributes for the year 2000 assigned by 7 image analysts, working independently of each other, to a set of 300 sample locations from a region of the Pacific Northwest of the United States. This data was used in an evaluation of the impact of interpreter variability on variance estimation.

A validation assessment of Land Cover Monitoring, Assessment, and Projection annual land cover products (2000–2019) for Hawaii was conducted with an independently collected reference data set. Reference data land cover attributes were assigned by trained interpreters for each year of the time series (2000–2019) to a reference sample of 600 Landsat resolution (30m x 30m) pixels. The interpreted land cover attributes were crosswalked to the LCMAP annual land cover classes: Developed, Cropland, Grass/Shrub, Tree Cover, Wetland, Water, Snow/Ice and Barren. The pixel values range from 0 to100 with an overall mean value of 7.1 and a standard deviation of +/-10.5. A new version of USGS’s FORE-SCE model was used to produce unprecedented landscape projections for four ecoregions in the Prairie Potholes region of Great Plains. The scenarios are consistent with the same scenarios modeled for the Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative region. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS, sensor resides aboard the Terra and Aqua platforms, offering a view the Earth's surface every 1-2 days. The MODIS sensor collects data within 36 spectral bands, ranging in wavelengths from 0.4 µm to 14.4 µm and provides us with imagery at a nominal resolution of 250 m at nadir for two bands, 500 m resolution for 5 bands, and the remaining 29 bands at 1 km.
