This data release contains elemental concentration data from the reanalysis of 13,930 archived stream-sediment sample and associated stream sediment reference material and 968 archived rock samples and associated rock reference material. All archived material was from samples that were collected in Alaska. Samples were retrieved from the USGS Mineral Program's sample archive in Denver, CO. Sample processing consisted of splitting the appropriate aliquot for the requested analyses. Boxes and maps of uranium exploration data were donated to the CGS several years ago referred to as the “Tallahassee Creek data.” This exploration data set focuses on the Hansen/Taylor, Picnic Tree, and High Park uranium deposits in the Tallahassee Creek mining area. These uranium deposits, a critical mineral as defined by Fortier and others (2018), occur in the Eocene Echo Park Alluvium and Oligocene Tallahassee Creek Conglomerate. Between 1957 and 1972, 95,400 tons of ore averaging 0.25% triuranium octoxide (U3O8) were mined in this area mostly from the Tallahassee Creek Conglomerate (Chenoweth, 1980). Open pit uranium mining in Atascosa, Karnes, and Live Oak Counties in the Texas gulf coast region was active during the second half of the 20th century. Understanding the history of these mining operations is important for proper management and restoration. Although some mines have extensive records documenting the locations and extents of mining pits and mine waste-rock piles, and provide descriptions of reclamation activities, abandoned mines with little to no such documentation are present on the landscape. From October 2017 to June 2018, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) collected 101 surficial sediment samples from abandoned mine wastepiles, ephemeral channels below wastepiles, nearby outcrops, and background areas representative of the undisturbed lithology in the Browns Park mining district of northeastern Utah. Additionally, twelve sediment samples were collected in drainages associated with legacy sample locations from the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) program (reformatted by Smith, 2006).
