Otoliths examined in this study were from randomly-sampled individual Tidewater Goby (Eucyclogobius newberryi) and Prickly Sculpin (Cottus asper) from the adult population of Rodeo Lagoon and Rodeo Creek, Marin County, California. The fish were collected in April and August 2016.

To determine aquifer characteristics, pneumatic slug tests were performed on selected zones and aquifers at a monitoring site near the North and South Belridge oil fields in the Southern San Joaquin Valley in Kern County. On November 19th and 20th, 2018, pneumatic slug tests were performed at five monitoring wells located at the multiple-well groundwater-monitoring site BWSD (28S/21E-08M1 through –M5) near Lost Hills, CA in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. Data were collected using In-Situ LevelTROLL 500 30psig pressure transducers set to record the depth to water level below land surface at one second intervals. Computations were performed using Aqtesolv software and analyzed using the KGS Model package for overdamped...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), compiled Fall 2017 fluid level elevation data from idle oil and gas wells in the Oxnard Oil Field to estimate vertical hydraulic head difference between oil production and overlying groundwater aquifer zones. Fluid elevations came from two sources, measurements in idle oil and gas wells and groundwater elevations in water wells in the overlying aquifer estimated at the points of idle well measurements using geographic information system (GIS) procedures. The fluid elevations from idle oil and gas wells were compiled by the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) as part of their Idle...

This data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. Please contact rhkent@usgs.gov with any immediate requests. The U.S. Geological Survey Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment-Priority Basin Project (USGS GAMA-PBP) collected samples to be analyzed for per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from domestic and public supply wells from May 2019 to September 2020. The datasets presented here include identification of the 28 PFAS constituents monitored by the project, Identification and brief characterization of the 211 GAMA-PBP wells for which samples were analyzed for PFAS during the study period, and analytical results for those groundwater samples, along with results for quality...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board collected produced water samples for analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the eight California oil fields of Fruitvale, Lost Hills, North Belridge, Orcutt, Placerita, South Belridge, Midway-Sunset, and Buena Vista from 2016 to 2020. Sampled sites included oil wells; injectate from tanks, pipelines, and injection wells where produced water from many wells, after removal of oil, is stored or transported prior to underground injection; integrated produced water from many oil wells collected from pipelines before oil removal; and surface disposal ponds where produced water, after removal of oil, is disposed...

The California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) initiated the Oil and Gas Regional Monitoring Program (RMP) to assess effects of oil and gas development on groundwater designated for any beneficial use. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the technical lead in conducting the RMP through the California Oil, Gas, and Groundwater (COGG) Program, working in cooperation with the State Water Board, and in partnership with other State and local agencies. The USGS collected and analyzed groundwater, surface water, and associated quality control (QC) samples in the Poso Creek Oil Field study area during February 2020-December 2021. Groundwater samples were collected from eleven irrigation, two domestic,...

This data release comprises a set of environmental sucralose occurrence data in the Sacramento area. Groundwater samples were collected throughout the Sacramento Valley as part of the California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program Priority Basin Project study in the Sacramento area. These water samples were analyzed for sucralose by chemical derivatization followed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The calculated concentrations of sucralose detected in the water samples and the associated quality assurance data are tabulated in this data release. This data release supports the following publications: [Voss et al, in prep]

Field data for a spatial water quality map, using Yellow Spring Instruments (YSI) EXO2 sondes over a span of 160 minutes in Rodeo Lagoon, CA, on August 16th, 2016. This data release includes all measured environmental parameters included in the analysis.
A Gust erosion chamber was used to apply horizontal shear stress to sediment cores obtained from San Pablo and Grizzly (within Suisun) Bays in California. A pair of sediment cores were collected from the same approximate locations in each bay six times between June 12th, 2019 and August 15th, 2019 for a total of 12 experiments and 24 sediment core results. Locations were chosen to capture the benthic variability along the estuarine salinity gradient, are established benthic monitoring stations, proximity to historic/restored wetlands, and practicality for field operations. Sampling dates targeted spring and neap tide conditions. An onshore experiment was conducted on each core to apply shear stresses with stepwise...

This report documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in the North Delta in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta of California, USA. The data set includes nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and chlorophyll. Data-collection were conducted over one day in July 2017 when continuous monitoring stations detected elevated chlorophyll concentration and decreasing nitrate concentrations.

This dataset contains geochemical and other information for 40 historical samples of produced water from the North Coles Levee Oil Field. Three of these samples are from commingled tanks containing produced water from multiple wells as noted in the “Remarks” column. Water that is produced as a byproduct of oil production is called produced water. The numerical water chemistry data were compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from scanned laboratory analysis reports available from the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM). Sample site characteristics, such as well construction details, were attributed using a combination of information provided with the scanned laboratory analysis reports...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 38 wells used for domestic and small system drinking water supply in the Coachella Valley of California in 2020. The wells were sampled for the Coachella Valley Basin (CODA) Domestic Aquifer Study Unit of the California State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. Coachella Valley is located in the Desert hydrogeologic province (Johnson and Belitz, 2003) and is structurally divided into four subbasins by the San Andreas fault: the Indio subbasin, the Mission Creek subbasin,...

The Russian River Watershed (RRW) covers about 1,300 square miles (without Santa Rosa Plain) of urban, agricultural, and forested lands in northern Sonoma County and southern Mendocino County, California. Communities in the RRW depend on a combination of Russian River water and groundwater to meet their water-supply demands. Water is used primarily for agricultural irrigation, municipal and private wells supply, and commercial uses - such as for wineries and recreation. Annual rainfall in the RRW is highly variable, making it prone to droughts and flooding from atmospheric river events. In order to better understand surface-water and groundwater issues, the USGS is creating a Coupled Ground-Water and Surface-Water...
