This project will provide a comprehensive synthesis of beaver recolonization science and techniques for successful reintroduction or population expansion through a thorough, in-depth, coordinated review of all North American beaver-related information, including identification of research gaps and data needs, and recommendations for project implementation. This information will be disseminated through a series of one-day workshops.

The bull trout is an ESA-listed species that relies on cold stream environments across the Northwest and is expected to decline with climate change. Resource managers are charged with maintaining bull trout across their range, but monitoring this species is difficult and many populations have rarely or never been sampled. To reduce this uncertainty (and regulatory gridlock), we propose to coordinate a crowd-sourced field assessment of the distribution of bull trout in the U.S. by using inexpensive, reliable environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling. Samples collected by this multi-partner effort can be used to evaluate many other species (e.g., a biodiversity assessment) with no additional field costs and can serve as a...

The results of this proposed project would provide the first comprehensive identification of fisher distribution in the northern Rocky Mountains, which may serve as a baseline for identifying population trends and changes in distribution over time.A species distribution model will be constructed, using field data collected to date, that relates fisher presence observations to environmental variables (i.e., spring snow cover, minimum spring temperatures, annual rainfall, topographic position, elevation, and others). These environmental predictors will provide an indication of the contemporary distribution and environmental requirements of the species in the northern Rocky Mountains. Down-scaled global climate models...

A “gateway” using Data Basin technology has been developed to serve the data integration, collaboration and outreach needs of the NPLCC. The gateway will continue to be a customized interface of the Data Basin platform that includes special branding, curation of spatial content, and direct links to selected sites in support of projects funded by and for the NPLCC . Conservation Biology Institute will add to the “gateway” a spatial data visualization tool to showcase priority data from the Pacific Marine and Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnership.

The Cascadia Partner Forum fosters a network of natural resource practitioners working with the Great Northern and North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperatives to build the adaptive capacity of the landscape and species living within it. Funding from the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative will support vital portions of the 2014-2015 work plan of this partnership. Including Wildlinks 2014 conference, two fellows to support Cascadia Partner Forum work, and a transboundary workshop. The funding will allow two fellows (one from British Columbia and one from Washington) to assist the forum over 6 months on the following tasks: 1) Identify and upload data layers into the Conservation Planning Atlas for...

Increased network capacity is a priority identified by the GNLCC and the RMPF Leadership Team to build on the organizational structure of LCC Partner Forums. Partner Forum organizations are intentionally inclusive collections of key decision-makers and stake-holders in the region who facilitate the flow of information and ideas, the delineation of shared priorities, and the advancement of projects leading to mutually beneficial outcomes. The ability of a Partner Forum to provide these services is directly related to the efficacy of its network. As the Partner Forum network improves, it successfully applies the outcomes of its work across the Rocky Mountain region and the greater GNLCC area. The importance of building...

Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MTFWP) has been involved with developing a crucial areas statewide Decision Support System (DSS) since 2008 in parallel with activities from the Western Governors Association (WGA). In April, 2010, the Crucial Areas Planning System (CAPS) was released. Also in 2010, the WGA provided funding to the 18 western states to begin developing DSSs for crucial areas among and between the 18 western states. MTFWP will be piloting a transboundary DSS for fish, wildlife, and habitats along the Idaho-Montana Divide, beginning in July 2010. MTFWP will also participating in a dual role of advisory and collaboration with the Washington, Oregon and Idaho Columbia Plateau pilot project.This...

We propose an international partnership to facilitate the identification of habitat connectivity conservation opportunities and implementation of connectivity projects in the transboundary area of Washington and British Columbia. The project will engage a transboundary subgroup of the WHCWG co-led by experts from both Washington and British Columbia to: (1) summarize and interpret our statewide and Columbia Plateau ecoregional products (see www.waconnected.org), as well as provincial products, with the objective of highlighting general connectivity patterns and to define where and how to focus our operational-scale transboundary habitat connectivity analyses; (2) establish subregional teams to collaborate on finer-scale...

This project is intended to advance wolverine conservation across the Rocky Mountains and North Cascades in the contiguous United States. It will include maintaining landscape connectivity among occupied wolverine habitats, assessing the feasibility to assist wolverine distribution expansion with translocation, developing and implementing a collaborative multi-state monitoring plan to assess distribution and genetic characteristics of the metapopulation, and engaging key partners at multiple levels to prioritize habitat conservation, population connectivity, and management activities. We have 4 overarching project objectives, all of which apply across the range of wolverines in the contiguous U.S.:1. Maintain landscape...

This project will focus on analysis of 10 years of GPS telemetry data for 60 grizzly bears across the threatened and fragmented trans-border grizzly bear subpopulations in the Cabinet, Yaak, Purcell, and Selkirk Mountain (Proctor et al. 2012) with a goal to identify areas of high quality core habitat and understand the ecological characteristics that underpin habitat use. We will use Resource Selection Function habitat-use models for partitioned by sex and in each of 3 seasons to capture the variation of bear habitat use. We will also work to integrate our results to inform wildlife and land managers on where to concentrate their management efforts by season to promote population health and resilience in both the...

The purpose of the proposed project is to increase the cross cultural capacity of indigenous and non-indigenous groups to collaborate on climate adaptation in the Crown of the Continent (CoC) a sub-region of the GNLCC area. In order to achieve this purpose, the objectives of this project are to conduct a pilot study 1) to identify the necessary protocols for collaboration between the Blackfeet Nation and government and non-government agencies active, and 2) to identify the priorities of the Blackfeet Nation in climate change adaptation. The outcomes of this project will include both written and presented material on the priorities of, and protocols for working with the Blackfeet Nation, including a widely distributed...

The Western Governors Association has sponsored an assessment of crucial habitats which will be used for the evaluation of landscape-scale energy, land use, and transportation projects. At present, this assessment does not incorporate ecological integrity or stream-network connectivity into its assessment of aquatic habitats. This proposal will address in both Oregon and Washington states the need to incorporate ecological integrity and stream network connectivity into the Western Governors assessment of aquatic crucial habitats.FY2012Objectives:To incorporate ecological integrity and stream-network connectivity into the Western Governors assessment of aquatic crucial habitats for Oregon and Washington. The resulting...

The Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) is sponsoring the Sage Steppe Partner Forum to help facilitate collaboration among conservation practitioners and partnerships that share landscape conservation challenges in an eco-geographic context. Draft Partner Forum guidance suggests that field-level managers, scientists, and conservation constituents will, through a loosely structured process, identify priority conservation information and scientific needs that fall within the scope of the Great Northern LCC Strategic Conservation Framework. The sagebrush-steppe biome covers some 480,000 square miles in 14 western states and provinces expanding the SSPF challenge to areas outside the GNLCC geography....

This project will create a targeted and easily understandable guide to tools that support landscape-level planning in the face of climate change for NPLCC partners. The guide will build on previous NPLCC research on decision support needs with an emphasis on tools currently in use in the region. A survey of NPLCC partners will discover who is currently using or planning to use tools in the region, tools they are using, how well these tools are meeting their needs, and regional and outside experts engaged in tool use. Additional tools research will provide information on tools not currently in use in the region that could also provide needed functionality.
