In the desert Southwest, changes in species composition, abundance, and distribution that may occur with climate change have significant implications for management of natural resources. These changes include: the extirpation or introduction of species, losses of biodiversity, shifts in structure and function of ecosystems and the services they provide, changes in wildlife habitat, invasion of non-native species, and changes in fire regimes. For planning, mitigation, and adaption, land managers would be greatly aided by knowing, in advance, which plant species, functional types, and assemblages will change in response to climate change so that monitoring and mitigation measures can focus on those resources. Our...
North American Bird Habitat Joint Ventures are responsible for providing science-based guidance to mitigate declines in wild bird populations through habitat protection, restoration and improvement. To guide these activities, the Rio Grande Joint Venture (RGJV) commissioned the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO) to develop conservation plans for five species of grassland birds. RMBO added the collection of habitat parameters to their grassland bird surveys conducted from 2009 to 2011. The addition of these data allowed RMBO to develop habitat-specific relationships to bird density for the Grassland Priority Conservation Areas (GPCA).

TNC developed a digital version for the whole of David E. Brown and Charles H. Lowe’s 1981 map. Previously, GIS representations of this map were only available for its Arizona and New Mexico portions. Users: please note the relatively coarse source scale of the paper map (1:1,000,000) when using this digital version for analyses. A layer file (.lyr) which mimics the familiar color scheme of the paper map is also available.
It was just over a year ago that National Wildlife Federation, South Dakota State University’s Department of Natural Resource Management, and the North Central Sun Grant Center started talking about putting on a conference that would address the growing concerns surrounding the preservation of America’s grasslands – one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world. It is estimated that tallgrass prairies and savannas of the mid-western states have declined by as much as 99% as a result of habitat fragmentation, conversion to cropland, and undesirable habitat changes due to fire exclusion, improper grazing management, and use and spread of invasive and non-native plants, among other factors. The ecological and...
In early fall of 2015, the National Wildlife Federation hosted the third America’s Grasslands Conference – in Fort Collins, Colorado in partnership with Colorado State University and the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. As a harbinger of conservation successes and lessons learnt, one of the field trips was to the Soapstone Natural Area where a few weeks later, a herd of Bison charged in to the public grassland for the first time in a century and a half. The conference centered on promising partnerships for grassland conservation and was attended by over 230 participants with diverse backgrounds from researchers and conservationists to producers and policymakers. The conference ran from September 29th to October...

Currently in Mexican arid regions, high pressure is applied to natural resources for their utilization, principally in the form of: uncontrolled grazing omnipresent in every corner accessible to cattle, opening high risk lands up for crop production, overexploitation of aquifers, discharge of contaminated waters, riparian areas drying up, exploration and uncontrolled exploitation of natural goods: flora, fauna, oil, gas, etc., without promotion of participatory activities for resource conservation and improvement among users, which results in a poor understanding of the precarious condition of the grassland environment. Se ejerce actualmente en México, una elevada presión de uso de los recursos naturales de estas...

REAs synthesize the best available information about resource conditions and trends within an ecoregion. They highlight and map areas of high ecological value, including important wildlife habitats and corridors, and gauge their potential risks from climate change, wildfires, invasive species, energy development, and urban growth. REAs also map areas that have high energy development potential, and relatively low ecological value, which could be best-suited for siting future energy development. In addition, REAs establish landscape-scale baseline ecological data to gauge the effect and effectiveness of future management actions. The Sonoran Desert REA was initiated in July 2010. It has been completed and peer reviewed...

North American Grassland ecosystems are a regional priority of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).And in order to implement Strategic Habitat Conservation (SHC) planning the FWS Grasslands EcosystemTeam (GET) needs to better understand the threat of climate change. Based on survey results of GET’sknowledge and needs, we propose to deliver targeted training to enhance the GETs ability tostrategically address climate issues in conservation planning. To date, the GET has successfullyaddressed other grassland threats (e.g., land conversion) but without this training the GET will behandicapped in their ability to fully integrate climate impacts and adaptation into the grassland SHC.
Longterm (45 years) temporal data were used to assess the influence of spatial scale on temporal patterns of a semi-arid west Texas grassland. Temporal basal area dynamics of common curlymesquite (Hilaria belangeri (Steud.) Nash) collected from permanent plots within two areas that were released from disturbance (longterm overgrazing and drought), were evaluated at two spatial scales (quadrat, site). Wiens (1989) proposed hypotheses to characterize the influence of scale on variability, predictability, and equilibrium. These hypotheses were tested for this grassland and temporal patterns observed were different for each spatial scale. The large scale (site) was characterized by low variation between units, high...

The Jornada Basin Long Term Ecological Research program, in collaboration with the USDA ARS Jornada Experimental Range, studies the causes and consequences of desertification: the broad scale expansion of woody plants into grasslands that results in more "desert like" conditions. We are interested in spatial and temporal variation in desertification dynamics, and how historic legacies, the geomorphic template, transport vectors (wind, water, animals), and environmental drivers (climate, land use, disturbance) interact with the patch structure of the vegetation to determine past, present, and future ecosystem dynamics across scales. Our study site is located in the northern Chihuahuan Desert, approximately 25 km...

This report is volume 1 of a two-volume ecological assessment of grassland ecosystems in the Southwestern United States. Broadscale assessments are syntheses of current scientific knowledge, including a description of uncertainties and assumptions, to provide a characterization and comprehensive description of ecological, social, and economic components within an assessment area. Volume 1 of this assessment focuses on the ecology, types, conditions, and management practices of Southwestern grasslands. The second volume, due to be published in 2005, describes wildlife and fish species, their habitat requirements, and species-specific management concerns, in Southwestern grasslands. This assessment is regional in...

Recent research and species distribution modeling predict large changes in the distributions of species and vegetation types in the western interior of the United States in response to climate change. This volume reviews existing climate models that predict species and vegetation changes in the western United States, and it synthesizes knowledge about climate change impacts on the native fauna and flora of grasslands, shrublands and deserts of the interior American West. Species’ responses will depend not only on their physiological tolerances but also on their phenology, establishment properties, biotic interactions, and capacity to evolve and migrate. The volume is divided into eight chapters that cover the topics...
