Boreholes were drilled in 2017 and 2018 in Redwell Basin, a headwater catchment underlain by mineralized and hydrothermally altered sedimentary rock in the Elk Mountains near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. Site locations and drilling procedures are documented under the main page of this data release. Borehole geophysical data were collected in boreholes MW1, MW1UZ, and MW2.1 as open holes prior to well construction. Logging was performed by a combination of USGS and Mount Sopris Instruments (MW1) and University of Wyoming (MW1UZ and MW2.1) staff. Log types vary by well on the basis of available equipment, site limitations, and borehole conditions. In borehole MW1, log types include fluid temperature and conductivity,...

From October 2016 to July 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Maine Department of Transportation, collected surface, marine and borehole geophysical surveys to characterize the subsurface materials on land and under the water at a former mine facility in Brooksville, Maine. Three water-based geophysical methods were used to evaluate the geometry and composition of subsurface materials. Continuous seismic profiling (CSP) methods provide the depth to water bottom, and, when sufficient signal penetration can be achieved, delineate the depth to bedrock and subbottom materials. Continuous resistivity profiling (CRP) and frequency domain electromagnetics (FDEM) methods...

The objective of this study is to delineate areas of primary groundwater recharge for the surficial, Castle Hayne, and Peedee aquifers in New Hanover County in order to determine the susceptibility of the local drinking-water aquifers. Areas of high susceptibility would coincide with groundwater recharge areas, likely where the Castle Hayne and Peedee aquifers are unconfined and directly connected with shallow surficial sands, as well as developed coastal areas prone to saltwater intrusion. Determining areas of groundwater recharge is a complex task, as many hydrologic and geologic factors must be considered, including precipitation and evapotranspiration rates, soil depth and drainage, landscape topography, and...

Brackish groundwater (BGW), defined for this assessment as having a dissolved-solids concentration between 1,000 and 10,000 milligrams per liter is an unconventional source of water that may offer a partial solution to current (2016) and future water challenges. In support of the National Water Census, the U.S. Geological Survey has completed a BGW assessment to gain a better understanding of the occurrence and character of BGW resources of the United States as an alternative source of water. Analyses completed as part of this assessment relied on previously collected data from multiple sources, and no new data were collected. One of the most important contributions of this assessment is the creation of a database...

This dataset contains velocity and flow log data collected in 2004 for two Yucaipa Valley Water District (YVWD) public-supply wells, YVWD 55 and YVWD 56. Data were collected using the tracer-pulse method described in Izbicki and others (1999), in which a pulse of a rhodamine dye tracer is injected to a known depth in the well and the travel time of the tracer to a detector on the surface is measured. Velocity and cumulative flow are calculated from the dye-arrival times using methods described by Izbicki and others (1999). Flow for well YVWD 55 was calculated using the pump within the screened interval, which captured flow from above and below the pump intake. Flow for well YVWD 56 was calculated using the pump...

A potentiometric surface map for spring 2016 was created for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial (MRVA) aquifer, which was referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), using most of the available groundwater-altitude data from wells and surface-water-altitude data from streamgages. Most of the wells were measured annually or one time, after installation, but some wells were measured more than one time in a year and a small number of wells were measured continually. Streamgages were typically operated continuously. The potentiometric surface map for 2016 was created as part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Availability and Use Science Program to support investigations that characterize...

In response to concerns about rangeland fragmentation associated with exurban development, ranching families, agency representatives, and conservation groups have organized to address management concerns through the Malpai Borderlands Group (see: http://www.malpaiborderlandsgroup.org). This group promotes large acreage conservation easements throughout the region as means to promote rangeland connectivity. Shrub encroachment and long-term loss of grass productivity are primary natural resource concerns. Fire, which is facilitated in areas free of exurban development, is a key conservation practice. Additional practices include mechanical brush management, prescribed grazing, and erosion control structures. The conservation...
