Accurate estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) is essential for assessments of water balance and hydrologic responses to forest restoration treatments in uplands adjacent to the Desert LCC. As part of the Four Forests Restoration Initiative, a new paired watershed study is being planned to assess the hydrologic effects of mechanically thinning and restoring a more frequent fire regime to the ponderosa pine forests of Arizona. Water and energy balances will be measured and modeled in these paired watersheds to help inform and better plan for the hydrologic responses of future forest restoration actions. Researchers at Northern Arizona University have collected six years of eddy covariance measurements of ET in the...

The Quartz Valley Indian Reservation will partner with tribes, federal agencies and higher education institutions in the Klamath Basin on a tribal youth intern program for the summer of 2014. This program will build on current efforts to integrate western science and TEK for climate change planning and adaptation in the Klamath Basin.

The Red River Basin of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana was chosen as a focus area study (FAS) as part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Census (NWC). The objective of the NWC is to place technical information and tools in the hands of stakeholders so that they can make decisions on water availability. With this set objective, the USGS Water Science Centers in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana conducted a study of water use and availability for the Red River Basin to improve water withdrawal estimates and investigate trends in water resources under future climate conditions and increased water withdrawals using groundwater and surface-water models (MODFLOW...

In 2014, the Upper Rio Grande Basin (URGB) of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico was chosen as a focus area study (FAS) for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Census. The three main objectives of the USGS National Water Census are to (1) provide a nationally consistent set of indicators that reflect each status and trend relating to the availablity of water resources in the United States, (2) provide information and tools that allow users to better understand the flow requirements for ecological purposes, and (3) report on areas of significant competition over water resources and the factors that have led to the competition. The URGB FAS will help meet these objectives through an integrated,...

Despite the lack of surface flows, the Colorado River riparian corridor in Mexico has proven to be ecologically resilient. Floods in the 1980s and 90s in the region brought back large swaths of native riparian habitat, which still persist today in some areas along the river. Because the historic floodplain is extremely important for agricultural production and therefore the local economy, habitat maintenance must be integrated with continued utilization of lands and water for this purpose. The riparian, marsh, and open-water areas found in Reach 4 provide critical habitat for both migratory and resident riparian bird species. Due to its ecological importance, the riparian corridor and Reach 4 in particular have been...

The Russian River Watershed (RRW) covers about 1,300 square miles (without Santa Rosa Plain) of urban, agricultural, and forested lands in northern Sonoma County and southern Mendocino County, California. Communities in the RRW depend on a combination of Russian River water and groundwater to meet their water-supply demands. Water is used primarily for agricultural irrigation, municipal and private wells supply, and commercial uses - such as for wineries and recreation. Annual rainfall in the RRW is highly variable, making it prone to droughts and flooding from atmospheric river events. In order to better understand surface-water and groundwater issues, the USGS is creating a Coupled Ground-Water and Surface-Water...
