This report presents the results of a harvest survey and ethnographic research project that investigated the subsistence uses of large land mammals and furbearers in Game Management Unit 25 in the Yukon Flats region of Interior Alaska. Large land mammal species harvested and used by Yukon Flats residents include moose Alces alces, caribou Rangifer tarandus, black bear Ursus americanus, and brown bear Ursus arctos. Furbearing species included in this study are marten Martes americana, lynx Lynx canadensis, and wolf Canis lupus. For the 2008–2009 study year a total of 284 of 467 households (approximately 61%) were surveyed in the 7 Yukon Flats communities of Beaver, Birch Creek, Chalkyitsik, Circle, Fort Yukon, Stevens...

Data was acquired during aerial surveys conducted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) between 1992 and 2005. The aerial surveys were conducted annually to count and classify moose in the area. Data are used by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks in their management responsibilities to set hunting seasons, determine population trends, and identify critical habitats. Observations were recorded on data forms and locations either plotted on USFS Maps (Deerlodge National Forest) or recorded by specific location. The data represents observations of moose. It is not intended to represent overall or annual distribution. Each individual observation represents one or more animals. Density of observations does not...

We studied behavioral and ecologic effects of differential predation pressure on moose (Alces alces gigas) in the eastern Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska, during 1996-1998. Annual mortality from grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) and wolf (Canis lupus) predation was higher for solitary yearling moose than for dependent yearlings (those with adults) and solitary adults.

This project will involve prescribed burning 6546 acres (approximately half black) in a mosaic pattern in the Pole Creek area to improve upland plant communities, and aspen stands by removing conifer cover to help sustain aspen habitat by promoting suckering and removing competition by conifers to increase productivity and browse. The project includes a special emphasis on improvement of the age class and diversity of plant communities. Historically, some of this area has been classified as transitional and year long range for mule deer, elk, moose, and antelope. Healthy aspen, mountain shrub, grassland/forb and riparian communities are important parturition and fawn rearing areas for big game. By improving this...

We analyzed the relation between early winter distribution and density of female moose (Alces alces L.) and habitat heterogeneity in interior Alaska. We tested for effects of vegetation type, topography, distance to rivers and towns, occurrence and timing of fire, and landscape metrics. A spatial linear model was used to analyze effects of independent variables organized at multiple scales. Because densities of moose vary widely as a result of differences in management and other factors, a spatial response surface of the log of moose density was fit to remove large-scale effects. The analysis revealed that the densest populations of moose occurred closer to towns, at moderate elevations, near rivers, and in areas...

I examined social and ecological influences on moose (Alces alces gigas ) in Alaska, USA, with respect to hunting success, antler size, and population genetic structure. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) is frequently used to assess hunter success; thus I hypothesized that landscape characteristics and moose density would affect success. Using hunter harvest tickets returned to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, I modeled CPUE with Weibull regression. I determined success is significantly predicted by hunt location, mode of transportation, hunting regulations, use of commercial services (i.e., guides), year, road density, hunter-to-moose ratio, moose density, and hunter residency status. Antler size is an important...
