A boosted regression tree (BRT) model was developed to predict pH conditions in three-dimensions throughout the glacial aquifer system (GLAC) of the contiguous United States using pH measurements in samples from 18,258 wells and predictor variables that represent aspects of the hydrogeologic setting. Model results indicate that the carbonate content of soils and aquifer materials strongly controls pH and when coupled with long flow paths, results in the most alkaline conditions. Conversely, in areas where glacial sediments are thin and carbonate-poor, pH conditions remain acidic. At depths typical of drinking-water supplies, predicted pH > 7.5 – which is associated with arsenic mobilization – occurs more frequently...

This dataset is comprised of water quality data and benthic macroinvertebrate data collected from basins in Colorado, USA, and Finland. The data includes ancillary water quality characteristics but also a suite of trace metals observed at each site. Also included are modeled outputs that characterize the bioavailability of each trace metal to a biotic ligand. These data were used to explore the importance of metal toxicity and pH as stressors on benthic macroinvertebrates characterized as the number of unique Ephemeroptera + Plecoptera + Trichoptera genera observed at each site. An interpretive summary of the work follows. One of the primary goals of biological assessment of rivers is to identify whether contaminants...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides vertical water-quality profiles collected at Great Salt Lake, Utah monitoring sites during 1995–2000 and 2011–2022. Data were collected using an In-Situ Multi-Parameter TROLL 9500, In-Situ AquaTROLL 500, In-Situ AquaTROLL 600, or YSI EXO2 Multiparameter Sonde. Recorded parameters include water temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, and reduction potential. Historic data, 1995–2000, includes hydrometer and refractometer readings.

The surface water water-quality data were compiled from Water Quality Portal (https://www.waterqualitydata.us/) (National Water Quality Monitoring Council, 2015), USGS’s NAWQA Project’s data compilation (Oelsner and others, 2017) or the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (Montana Bureau of Mines, 2021), The compilation contains data for chloride, pH, specific conductance, sulfate, total dissolved solids (TDS) collected between water year 1970 to 2014. In addition 10 metals (aluminum, arsenic, barium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, selenium strontium, and zinc) analyzed during water years 1993 through 2014. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides continuously-measured water-quality data collected from two sites on Milford Lake, Kansas, during July 26-27 and August 30-31, 2015. All data are reported as raw measured values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. Water-quality monitors were used to measure water temperature, specific conductance, turbidity, pH, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, and dissolved oxygen at fifteen-minute intervals. This dataset includes all continuously measured data collected at two short-term, fixed-site locations as part of a study to evaluate the spatial variability of harmful algal blooms in Milford Lake, Kansas.

This data release contains phytoplankton data and vertical profile measurements of water quality and light in oligotrophic (low nutrient) lakes within the Adirondack Park, New York State. Data were collected between June and October 2021 at five lakes. Four lake locations (Nearshore, Open Water, Layer, Bloom) were sampled representing one of four sample types (Bottom Sediment, Surface Water, Bloom Material, Layer). Water-quality field parameters (water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration and percent saturation, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and fluorescent dissolved organic material) were measured at each sampling location from the surface to the...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides data collected from sediment oxygen demand (SOD) deployments conducted at eight stream sites in eastern Kansas during August 2014 through December 2015. Continuous water-quality monitors were used to measure water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, and total algae (chlorophyll-a and phycocyanin) at thirty second intervals. All data are reported as raw measured values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all water-quality data collected during sediment oxygen demand deployments.
