This data product contains the quality-controlled, native sampling resolution data from NEON's breeding landbird sampling crosswalked to Darwin Core. Breeding landbirds are defined as “smaller birds (usually exclusive of raptors and upland game birds) not usually associated with aquatic habitats” (Ralph et al. 1993). The breeding landbird point counts product provides records of species identification of all individuals observed during the 6-minute count period, as well as metadata which can be used to model detectability, e.g., weather, distances from observers to birds, and detection methods. A regularly raised concern for wind farms is the number of species and rate of bird and bat collisions with turbines. Australian regulators require, at some operating wind farms, the monitoring of bird and bat collisions. Although monitoring is becoming more commonplace, the area recommended for searching beneath turbines is inconsistent, with many guidelines both in Australia and overseas being based on conjecture rather than empirical evidence. We used variation in a portion of the mitochondrial DNA control region to examine phylogeography of Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, a boreal-adapted small mammal in the central Rocky Mountain region. AMOVA revealed that 65.66% of genetic diversity was attributable to variation within populations, 16.93% to variation among populations on different mountain ranges, and 17.41% to variation among populations within mountain ranges. Flight Observation Units, also referred to as Bear Observation Areas (BOAs), were delineated by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) to facilitate systematic aerial monitoring of the grizzly bear population within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Flight units were last updated in 2014 to depict 54 distinct observation areas spanning the spatial extent of the Demographic Monitoring Area established for the Yellowstone grizzly bear population.

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set represents 1990 population density by block group as a 100-m grid using data from the 1990 Census of Population and Housing (Public Law 94-171 redistricting data). Grid cell values represent population density in people per square kilometer multiplied by 10 so that the data could be stored as integer.
