Data presented are results of surveys and monitoring for San Diego Cactus Wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) in southern San Diego County. These data were collected to assess Cactus Wren population status to determine the relationships between specific elements of habitat quality and Cactus Wren presence. Surveys were conducted periodically at 507 plots throughout San Diego County. Birds that had been banded in prior years with unique color combinations were identified to individual on subsequent visits to provide data on survival and movement between years. These data support the following publication: Lynn, S., and Kus, B.E., 2023, Distribution and demography of coastal Cactus Wrens (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus)...

The Ecology Section at the USGS Conte Laboratory has studied fish in the West Brook since 1997. The goal is to understand the strength and direction of drivers on fish growth, movement, reproduction and survival in the wild. We hope to provide a comprehensive understanding of fish population dynamics and ultimately individual fitness (natural selection and evolution) in the study area.
Multiple factors likely influence natal dispersal behavior of juvenile mammals, which is typically male-biased. Because of their small body size and specific habitat requirements, pygmy rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis) are expected to exhibit limited dispersal. We predicted that dispersal would be male-biased, that juveniles born later in the year would disperse farther, and that juveniles would be more likely to disperse away from areas of higher habitat saturation. We used radiotelemetry to study dispersal of 61 juvenile pygmy rabbits (31 males and 30 females) from shortly after emergence from natal burrows (April?July) to the beginning of the next breeding season (mid-March) during 2004?2006. Juveniles dispersed...

Elevated selenium concentrations documented in water, sediment, and biota in irrigation drain water studies by U.S. Department of the Interior agencies and academia have raised concerns that selenium may be adversely affecting endangered fish in the upper Colorado River basin. The objective of the study was to determine the effects on endangered razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) larvae from exposure to selenium and other trace elements in water and zooplankton collected from sites adjacent to the Colorado River near Grand Junction, CO. A 30-day study was initiated with 5-day-old larvae exposed in a 44 factor experiment with four food and four water treatments, and the biological endpoints measured were survival,...

These data were compiled for a manuscript entitled 'Vital rates of a burgeoning population of Humpback Chub in western Grand Canyon. Objective(s) of our study were to compare survival and growth of humpback chub in western Grand Canyon to that from the more established metapopulation in eastern Grand Canyon that spawns in the Little Colorado River (LCR). These data represent capture histories of fish based on mark-recapture data. These data were collected in eastern Grand Canyon (CR-east study site) and in the western Grand Canyon (CR-west study site). The CR-east reach sites are located at the lower 13.56 rkm of the LCR and in the mainstem of the Colorado River at river kilometers (rkm) 126.2-128.7 (2009-2016)...
The impacts of climate change on cold water species will likely manifest in populations at the trailing edge of their distribution. Rio Grande cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii virginalis, RGCT) occupy arid southwestern U.S.A. streams at the southern-most edge of all cutthroat trout distributions; thus making RGCT particularly vulnerable to the anticipated warming and drying in this region. However, RGCT may possess a portfolio of life-history traits that aide in their persistence, attributes commonly observed in trailing edge populations. We used otolith and multistate capture-mark-recapture data collected along a temperature and stream drying gradient to determine how these environmental constraints influence...
Data presented are results of surveys and monitoring in 2019 for San Diego Cactus Wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) in southern San Diego County. Surveys were conducted at 493 plots. Plots were surveyed twice in 2019 and the number, age (adult or juvenile), banding status (color banded or not), breeding status (paired, unpaired, or unknown), and nesting status (active nest detected or not) of all wrens recorded. Habitat covariate data were collected including amount of dead and stressed cactus in the plot, percent cover of bare ground, and the dominant and percent cover of invasive species. During weekly monitoring visits, nests were located and checked to determine the number of eggs laid, the number of eggs...

We demonstrate a quantitative approach to differentiate source and sink habitats at large spatial scales using the greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter, sage-grouse), an indicator species for sagebrush ecosystems, as a case-study. We evaluated both selection and survival across multiple reproductive life stages (nesting, brood-rearing) in the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment (DPS), a genetically distinct and geographically isolated population of sage-grouse on the southwestern edge of the species’ range. Our approach allowed us to identify both mismatches between selection and survival and trade-offs between life stages. These findings suggest competing resource demands across time, with...
The role of lynx dispersal in maintaining their populations at the landscape scale is unclear. A large proportion of local lynx populations are known to disperse following a snowshoe hare population crash, but whether these dispersal events contribute to the cyclic dynamics of neighboring populations is not well understood. If lynx dispersal does play an important role in lynx population dynamics then the conservation of dispersal corridors is critical to maintaining those dynamics. However, we currently have no information on the habitat requirements of dispersing lynx in relation to human land use, such as housing developments, road building, timber harvest, and mining, all of which could have a substantial impact...

Data were collected associated with the application of a pesticide to a stormwater retention pond and burrows to suppress or eradicate an invasive crayfish species, Procambarus clarkii, in support of high-priority research developing control methods to mitigate impacts of invasive crayfish within the Great Lakes Basin. Effectiveness of the treatment was accessed using an in-situ bioassay and by measuring pesticide concentrations in water, sediment, and caged crayfish. Water quality data, including temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, hardness, ammonia, and turbidity, in stormwater ponds was collected to evaluate whether environmental conditions may impact treatment effectiveness and...
Data presented are results of surveys and monitoring in 2017 for Southwestern Willow Flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) in San Diego County, California. Surveys were conducted at locations along the San Luis Rey, Sweetwater, and Tijuana Rivers, and nest monitoring was performed at three locations along the San Luis Rey River downstream of Lake Henshaw (Cleveland National Forest, Rey River Ranch, Vista Irrigation District). Surveys were conducted along multiple sections of the river where permission to access properties could be obtained. Locations were surveyed using a standardized protocol three to four times between 15 May and 31 July. The number, age (adult or juvenile), sex, banding status (color banded...

We used movement and demographic data to simultaneously evaluate habitat selection by sage-grouse across multiple seasons, and measures of survival during key reproductive life stages (nesting and brood-rearing) to identify priority habitat by linking resource selection to demographic performance. We calculated and mapped composite selection and survival indices across the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment (DPS) to differentiate productive habitat that supported high selection and survival compared to areas of maladaptive selection where selection and survival were misaligned.
Fisheries managers have often suggested that survival of trout during the winter is a major factor affecting population densities in many stream ecosystems in the Rocky Mountains. In Wyoming, trout population reductions from fall to spring in excess of 90% have been documented in some reservoir tailwaters. Though biologists have surmised that these reductions were the result of either mortality or emigration from some river sections, the specific mechanisms have not been defined and the factors leading to the trout loss are unknown. This is a review of four studies that were conducted or funded between 1991 and 1998 by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to understand the extent of overwinter losses, identify some...

These data refer to habitat and activity data collected for female desert tortoises being monitored as part of a study on juvenile rearing and translocation for population augmentation purposes. The females were affixed with radio transmitters and radio tracked at least monthly to maintain knowledge of whereabouts. During those tracking events activity data were collected (surface or in burrows) and predominate habitat community recorded. Ancillary to this goal a habitat use study was conducted to determine the type of habitat occupied by females. Thus the data reference female morphology, activity, and a single instance of habitat use.

Translocating individuals of Eleutherodactylus frogs to alternative, suitable habitat is an adaptation strategy designed to minimize the impact of projected warming and drying in Puerto Rico. The action increases species persistence by increasing spatial redundancy, but it could also be used to supplement extant populations. We released 34 Eleutherodactylus coqui to determine initial, post-release survival under two treatments – non-translocated (N = 14), and translocated (N=20) to a different location 0.8 km away, but sharing similar habitat and environmental conditions. We defined “initial” as the first 17 days post-release, a period where we hypothesized that translocated individuals would have lower survival...
