A three-dimensional groundwater flow model using MODFLOW-NWT was developed to evaluate historical and potential stream capture in the lower Humboldt River Basin, Nevada. The Humboldt River Basin is the only river basin that is contained entirely within the state of Nevada. The effect of groundwater pumping on the Humboldt River is not well understood. Tools are needed to determine stream capture and manage groundwater pumping in the Humboldt River Basin. Previous work has demonstrated that the river’s surface-water resource is sensitive to groundwater withdrawals, which have steadily increased since the 1950s for agriculture, municipal, and mining uses. A numerical groundwater flow model was developed for the purpose...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. These data present a ground-water inventory of existing geospatial data and other information needed to determine the extent and characteristics of the aquifers in the Tahoe Basin. Geospatial and other data include geologic maps and soil surveys of the entire basin and for specific watersheds within the basin at the best available scales; vegetation remote-sensing datasets; well information from various local, state, and federal...

The digital data set delineates the outer boundary of each major discharge area evaluated as part of the study. These areas were used to refine estimates of ground-water discharge throughout the Death Valley regional flow system. As delineated, boundaries include all phreatophytic vegetation and moist soil areas within a discharge area. The boundaries were used to focus efforts associated with classifying the different vegetation...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. awc_UCRB_Maurer_resolution.asc is an Esri ASCII grid representing the available water capacity (AWC) for the Upper Colorado River Basin. AWC is the amount of water that a soil can hold, and is between a soil’s field capacity and the wilting point. In Soil-Water Balance model recharge simulations, AWC is multiplied by root zone depth to define the maximum water capacity of a cell, and any soil-moisture exceeding this amount is converted...

The Colorado River and its tributaries supply water to more than 35 million people in the United States and 3 million people in Mexico, irrigating more than 4.5 million acres of farmland, and generating about 12 billion kilowatt hours of hydroelectric power annually. Planning for the sustainable management of the Colorado River in future climates requires an understanding of the Upper Colorado River Basin groundwater system. The...

A three-dimensional, groundwater-flow model developed by Halford and Jackson (https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1863) was used to simulate effects of future (2020—2120) groundwater pumping on water levels and natural discharges in the Alkali Flat–Furnace Creek Ranch (AFFCR), Ash Meadows, Pahute Mesa–Oasis Valley (PMOV), and Pahrump to Death Valley South (PDVS) groundwater basins, southern Nevada and California. Four pumping scenarios were simulated, including a base case and scenarios A, B, and C. Scenarios were simulated from 1913 to 2120, with historical pumping occurring from 1913 to 2010, historical 2010 pumping rates projected from 2010 to 2020, and scenario pumping beginning in 2020. The base case projected 2010 pumping...

This data set consists of hydrogeology for the State of Nevada. Consolidated rocks and unconsolidated sediments are the two major hydrogeologic units. Consolidated rocks are subdivided into 8 hydrogeologic units: (1) carbonate rocks, Quaternary to Tertiary-age; (2) basaltic, (3) rhyolitic, and (4) andesitic volcanic flows; (5) volcanic breccias, tuffs, and volcanic rocks older than Tertiary-age; (6) intrusive and metamorphic rocks;...

This dataset consists of points representing selected well site locations and water-level measurements used by Lopes and Allander (2009) to develop autumn 2006 groundwater-level altitude contours for Smith and Mason Valleys, and the lower Walker River basin, Nevada. Since the publication of Lopes and Allander (2009), the positional coordinates and land-surface altitudes at selected well sites used to develop autumn 2006 groundwater-level contours in that report were updated as part of a 2022 U.S. Geological Survey study (Davies and Naranjo, 2022).

This U.S. Geological Survey data release consists of a geospatial dataset containing information on estimated streamflow extent, stream velocity, and stream depth at Soldier Meadows Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, Nevada, and the data acquired and processed to support the estimation of those attributes. Supporting datasets include topographic survey data collected using a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) in Soldier Meadows from August 13-15, 2019, and an archive of the two-dimensional hydraulic model used to generate a polygon dataset for streamflow extent as well as raster datasets for stream velocity, and stream depth. The data release includes: 1) a polygon...

There are two datasets containing four different extents. The first dataset contains the approximate maximum extent Gumboot Lake extent as published on plate 1 of Bulletin 39. The second data set contains three approximate elevation-derived extents based on observations published in Bulletin 39: 1) based on 1952-1953 estimated lake elevation of 4,320 feet, 2) based on the...

The Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-11) was passed into law on March 30, 2009. Sub-title F of the law, also known as the SECURE (Science and Engineering to Comprehensively Understand and Responsibly Enhance) Water Act, calls for the establishment of a “national water availability and use assessment program” in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The recommendation for a national assessment of the available water resources was driven by the lack of such an assessment since 1978. In fulfillment of the Act, the USGS developed the National Water Census (NWC), under the auspices of the USGS Water Availability and Use Program, and as part of that activity, among others, collected water withdrawal...
