This project will provide a comprehensive synthesis of beaver recolonization science and techniques for successful reintroduction or population expansion through a thorough, in-depth, coordinated review of all North American beaver-related information, including identification of research gaps and data needs, and recommendations for project implementation. This information will be disseminated through a series of one-day workshops.

The Quartz Valley Indian Reservation will partner with tribes, federal agencies and higher education institutions in the Klamath Basin on a tribal youth intern program for the summer of 2014. This program will build on current efforts to integrate western science and TEK for climate change planning and adaptation in the Klamath Basin.

The central objective of this project was to answer two questions: 1) how downscaled climate datasets, modeled vegetation changes, and information on estimated species sensitivities can be used to develop climate change adaptation strategies, and 2) how model results and datasets can be made more useful for informing the management of species and landscapes. To answer these questions, we identified enthusiastic partners working in two very different complex landscapes within the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NPLCC): 1) the British Columbia Park system, specifically the midcoast region, and 2) the National Wildlife Refuge system in the Willamette Valley, OR. The issues and concerns of each group...

This project developed a soil vulnerability index and map indicating where forest cover will be most affected by climate change. Using this map, researchers developed a greater understanding of potential changes in soil moisture and temperature regimes under future climate conditions. They then evaluated how this information could be used to improve vegetation models across the landscape. They compared the results of different modeling approaches to the soil vulnerability map, synthesized the state of knowledge and uncertainty, and introduced management implications for action.

This project will create a targeted and easily understandable guide to tools that support landscape-level planning in the face of climate change for NPLCC partners. The guide will build on previous NPLCC research on decision support needs with an emphasis on tools currently in use in the region. A survey of NPLCC partners will discover who is currently using or planning to use tools in the region, tools they are using, how well these tools are meeting their needs, and regional and outside experts engaged in tool use. Additional tools research will provide information on tools not currently in use in the region that could also provide needed functionality.

The circumboreal vegetation mapping (CBVM) project is an international collaboration among vegetation scientists to create a new vegetation map of the boreal region at a 1:7.5 million scale with a common legend and mapping protocol (Talbot and Meades 2011). The map is intended to portray potential natural vegetation, or the vegetation that would exist in the absence of human or natural disturbance, rather than existing vegetation that is commonly generated at larger scales. This report and map contributes to the CBVM effort by developing maps of bioclimatic zones, geographic sectors with similar floristic variability, and vegetation in boreal Alaska, Yukon, northwestern British Columbia, and a mountainous portion...

The Yukon North Slope is an arctic “hot spot” of climate change-induced effects with profound significance for the Inuvialuit and the larger region. In 1984, the Inuvialuit entered into a land claim agreement – the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) – with the governments of Canada, Yukon and Northwest Territories. A co-management body formed to make a plan, which was developed in 2003 but never ratified and is now considered out-of-date. Round River Conservation Studies is assisting WMAC(NS) in the collection, development and synthesis of spatial data, models and analyses of cultural and ecological values of the YNS.The project is a collaboration among the NWB LCC, Round River Conservation Studies, and the Arctic...

Climate change will likely have significant effects on forest ecosystems worldwide. In dryMediterranean regions, such as that in southwestern Oregon, USA, changes will likely be drivenmainly by wildfire and drought. To minimize the negative effects of climate change, resourcemanagers require tools and information to assess climate change vulnerabilities and to developand implement adaptation actions. We developed an approach to facilitate development andimplementation of climate change adaptation options in forest management. This approach, applied in a southwestern Oregon study region, involved establishment of a science–managerpartnership, a science-based assessment of forest and woodland vulnerabilities to climatechange,...
The Alaska Center for Conservation Science at the University of Alaska Anchorage, in partnership with the Northwest Boreal LCC and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, embarked on a project to map and quantify the human footprint and fisheries resources across the Yukon River watershed. The maps presented here show the footprint of human activities (ie., mining, transportation), as well as fisheries resources across this watershed.
The purpose of this volume is to create a resource for regional land and resource managers and researchers by synthesizing the latest research on the 1) historical/current status of landscape-scale drivers and ecosystem processes, including anthropogenic activities, 2) future projected changes of each, and 3) the impacts of changes on important resources. The individual sections can be informative alone, but when combined we can see a holistic picture of the drivers of landscape change in our region. The sections are short but contain a wealth of information and resources for more in-depth knowledge, and they highlight key findings and key information gaps so the most important information is easy to find and digest....

IMPORTANT NOTE: A more recent version of this data release is available from this link. This data release is the update of the U.S. Geological Survey - ScienceBase data release by Bera and Over (2016), with the processed data through September 30, 2015. The primary data for each year is downloaded from the ANL website (http://gonzalo.er.anl.gov/ANLMET/numeric/) and is processed following the guidelines documented in Over and others (2010) and Bera (2014). Hourly potential evapotranspiration computed using the computer program LXPET (Lamoreux Potential Evapotranspiration). Murphy (2005) describes in detail the computer program LXPET. Bathymetric survey data of the Brandon Road Dam spillway was collected on May 27 and May 28, 2015 by the US Geological Survey (USGS) using Trimble Real-Time Kinematic Global Positioning System (RTK-GPS) equipment. The base station was set up over a temporarily installed survey pin on both days. This pin was surveyed into an existing NGS benchmark (PID: BBCN12) within the Brandon Road Lock property. In wadeable sections, a GPS rover with 2.0 meter range pole and flat-foot was deployed. In sections unable to be waded, a 2.0 meter range pole was fix-mounted to a jon boat, and a boat-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was used to collect the depth data. ADCP depth data were reviewed in the WinRiver II...
Water velocities and discharge were measured in the lock chamber and immediately downstream of Brandon Road Lock on the Des Plaines River at river mile 286 on December 9-10, 2014 using Teledyne RDI Rio Grande 600 and 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP). The data were georeferenced with a differential GPS receiver with submeter accuracy. These ADCP measurements were collected in support of the US Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS). Velocity measurements were processed using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (Parsons and others, 2013) to derive temporally- and spatially-averaged water velocity values. Discharge measurements were processed with the QRev discharge...
