NOTE: This download link includes Fish Regions, Freshwater Ecoregions, and Freshwater Resilience. Freshwater ecoregions provide a global biogeographic regionalization of the Earth's freshwater biodiversity. These units are distinguished by patterns of native fish distribution resulting from large-scale geoclimatic processes and evolutionary history. The freshwater ecoregion boundaries generally, though not always, correspond with those of watersheds. Within individual ecoregions there will be turnover of species, such as when moving up or down a river system, but taken as a whole an ecoregion will typically have a distinct evolutionary history and/or suite of ecological processes (Abell et al. 2008). The WWF defined...
The download for this dataset includes TNC’s full Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System: stream size, stream temperature, stream gradient, stream geology, lakes and catchments. This dataset represents the results (9/30/2008) of the Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System (NAHCS) GIS map for streams and rivers. This classification focused on mapping a stream habitat types across 13 northeastern states (ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DC, DE, VA, WV). Stream and river centerlines were extracted from the USGS National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NH-Plus) 2006 1:100,000 data. These reaches were attributed and placed into classes representing their biopysical setting in terms of stream...

NOTE - This map contains two datasets: "Important Anadromous Fish Habitat, Northeast U.S." and "Atlantic Salmon Rearing Areas, Maine"These dataset are part of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. "Important Anadromous Fish Habitat" and “Atlantic Salmon Rearing Areas, Maine” are two input used in developing “Lotic Core Areas, Stratified by Watershed, Northeast U.S.” that is also part of Nature’s Network. Lotic core areas represent intact, well-connected rivers and stream reaches in...

This is a 30 meter grid that maps upland and wetland wildlife habitats/ecological systems for the Northeastern US, including all 13 states from Maine to Virginia, west to New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and for the Maritime provinces of Canada (Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick) and southeastern Quebec. Mapped habitat types are drawn from the Northeastern Terrestrial Habitat Classification System (NETHCS) and from some ecological system types identifed by Canadian ecologists as being unique to Canada. The NETHCS is based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classification, augmented with additional information from individual state wildlife classifications and other information specific...

A spatial dataset of public and private lands and waters secured by a conservation situation that includes an explicit level of security from future conversion and current incompatible uses. The eastern secured lands system represents a commitment to nature and to future generations, and an indication of what can be achieved through collective effort. These lands provide the core of efforts to protect the region’s outstanding habitats and threatened species, and are increasingly understood as essential providers of ecosystem services and storehouses of the land’s biological resources. Even as the region’s ecology adjusts in response to a changing climate, the secured lands play a critical role in maintaining arenas...

This data set is a complete digital hydrologic unit boundary layer of the Subbasin (10-digit) 5th level for the entire United States, clipped to the Northeast. A hydrologic unit (HU) is a drainage area delineated to nest a multi-level, hierarchical drainage system. Its boundaries are defined by a hydrographic and topographic criteria that delineate an area of land upstream from a specific point on a river, stream, or similar surfaces waters. An HU can accept surface water directly from upstream drainage areas, and indirectly from associated surface areas such as remnant, non-contributing, and diversions to form a drainage area with single or multiple outlet points. HUs are only synonymous with classic watersheds...

This project is intended to address a high priority science need for the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC): the need to enhance the capacity of partners to assess and design sustainable landscape conservation for wildlife across the eastern United States. Specifically, this project is intended to address elements 1b) of a broader Designing Sustainable Landscapes project: 1. Assess the current capability of habitats in the North Atlantic LCC to support sustainable wildlife populations a. Select representative terrestrial wildlife species b. Develop habitat relationship models for representative species c. Predict capability of current landscape to support populations of representative species...

Note: The download link includes Fish Regions, Freshwater Ecoregions, and Freshwater Resilience. Within each freshwater ecoregion, we defined one to four discrete fish regions using a cluster analysis of the USGS 8-digit Hydrologic Units (HUC) based on similarities in their native fish composition. The analysis was based on a previously developed list of native species present within each HUC (NatureServe, 2008). The cluster analysis defined up to four clusters within each freshwater ecoregion using similarity of composition (Linkage method: Flexible beta, Distance measure: Sorensen (Bray-Curtis), Flexible beta value of -0.250). To determine the faunal distinctiveness between clusters, we performed an indicator...
