This U.S. Geological Survey Data Release contains the data and metadata associated with the journal article. Parental incubation behavior largely influences nest survival, a critical demographic process in avian population dynamics, and behaviors vary across species with different life history breeding strategies. Although research has identified nest survival advantages of mixing colonies, behavioral mechanisms that might explain these effects is largely lacking. We examined parental incubation behavior using video-monitoring techniques on Alcatraz Island, California, of black-crowned night-heron Nycticorax nycticorax (hereinafter, night-heron) in a mixed-species colony with California gulls Larus californicus...
The US Geological Survey, in cooperation with the National Park Service, mapped 35 7.5-minute quadrangles, within a 2-mile-wide+ corridor centered on the Parkway, from BLRI (Blue Ridge Parkway) Mile Post (MP) 0 near Afton, Virginia southward to MP 218 at Cumberland Knob, approximately 1.3 km south of the Virginia – North Carolina State Line. Detailed bedrock geologic mapping for this project was conducted at 1:24,000-scale by systematically traversing roads, trails, creeks, and ridges within and adjacent to the 2-mile-wide+ corridor along the 216.9-mile length of the BLRI in Virginia. Geologic data at more than 23,000 station points were collected during this project (September 2009 – February 2014), with approximately...
The data are .csv files of tagged sea otter re-sighting locations (henceforth, resights) collected in the field using a combination of VHF radio telemetry and direct observation using high powered (80x) telescopes. Sea otters were tracked by shore based observers from the date of tagging until the time of radio battery failure or the animal’s death, whichever comes first. The frequency of re-sighting was opportunistic, depending on logistical factors such as coastal access, but generally ranged from daily to weekly. Location coordinates are reported as X and Y coordinates in the projection/datum California Teale-Albers NAD 1927. Each file contains resight data for one individual sea otter collected over a period...

The ViTexOCR script presents a new method for extracting navigation data from videos with text overlays using optical character recognition (OCR) software. Over the past few decades, it was common for videos recorded during surveys to be overlaid with real-time geographic positioning satellite chyrons including latitude, longitude, date and time, as well as other ancillary data (such as speed, heading, or user input identifying fields). Embedding these data into videos provides them with utility and accuracy, but using the location data for other purposes, such as analysis in a geographic information system, is not possible when only available on the video display. Extracting the text data from imagery using software...

These data are from a 1998 multibeam survey of the sea floor offshore of Fire Island Inlet, New York. There are five datasets: bathymetry grid, shaded-relief image, backscatter intensity image, shaded-relief colored by backscatter intensity image, and trackline navigation. The bathymetry shows the shape of the sea floor. Of particular interest are the size, shape, and orientation of bed forms that may indicate sediment movement. The shaded-relief image provides a visualization of the bathymetry that accentuates small features that cannot be effectively shown as contours alone. The image of backscatter intensity provides qualitative information on the sediment texture and roughness of the sea floor. The image of...

Filtered water samples were collected by the USGS National Water Quality Program (NWQP) Southeastern Stream Quality Assessment (SESQA) from 59 perennial, wadeable (less than 10 m width and 1 m depth at base-flow) headwater stream sites in watersheds with varying degrees of urban land use in four states. Dataset includes sample site locations and information, analytical method information, water sample pharmaceutical concentrations and summary statistics, and corresponding watershed land-use-land-cover data and data dictionary.

NOTE: This data release has been deprecated. In support of the USGS LandCarbon project, field observations of stream and lake carbon gas fluxes and other water-quality data were collected from surface waters in the conterminous US. The sampling was designed to cover a variety of geographic, climatic, and environmental settings to better understand the ranges and distributions of carbon gas fluxes from surface waters. Field observations of carbon gas concentration and flux were paired with laboratory measurements of stream chemical characteristics. Locations were derived from field GPS values or from listed coordinates of USGS streamgages located at the sampling site. Discharge data was either measured in the field...

Aquatic invasive species are often transported between water bodies on boats or boat trailers, thus they are considered one of the primary vectors for new introductions of invasive species to a water body. This data set contains geographic positioning system locational data for boater access points, use data (i.e. recreational, fishing), water quality measurements (e.g. calcium concentrations, pH), risk assessment data, and other physical attributes (i.e. size, elevation) where available within the Columbia and Snake Rivers and throughout the Columbia River Basin. This work builds on an earlier body of work by Wells et al. 2011, Prioritizing Zebra and Quagga Mussel Monitoring in the Columbia River Basin (PDF link...

Greater sage-grouse ( Centrocercus urophasianus; hereinafter, sage-grouse) are a sagebrush obligate species that has declined concomitantly with the loss and fragmentation of sagebrush ecosystems across most of its geographical range. The species has been considered for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act multiple times, and was most recently ruled to not warrant protection as of September 2015. Nevertheless, the species faces threats from increasing wildfire frequency and changing climate, which are identified frequently as two environmental drivers contributing to declines of sage-grouse populations. To help inform a threat assessment within the Great Basin for listing sage-grouse in 2015 under the...
