Water velocities were measured in the Calumet Harbor for 5 dates in 2015 and 2016 using Teledyne Rio Grande 600 kHz acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP). The data were georeferenced with differential Dlobal Positioning System (GPS) receivers with submeter accuracy. These velocity data were collected in cooperation with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District. To better understand the hydrodynamics and water-quality distributions of the lower portion of Hoover Reservoir near Westerville, Ohio, in response to selective withdrawal operations at the dam, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted two sets of synoptic surveys of water-quality and velocity in August 2015. On August 25, 2015, the middle intake gates were operational at the dam, while on August 27, 2015, the lower intake gates were operational. These water-quality data were collected with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Digital datasets were used to develop basin characteristics whose values are used in multiple regression equations and tested for the use in predicting flow-duration curves (FDCs) in ungaged areas of Illinois and Indiana. Several basin characteristics are easily derived from StreamStats (https://streamstats.usgs.gov/ss/) basin delineations themselves, such as basin area and basin centroid. Other basin characteristics require ancillary datasets as input.
