Rainfall measurements were collected in and near the Dolan Fire burn area, Los Padres National Forest, California. The CZU Fire ignited in Los Padres National Forest, California, on August 18, 2020. By the time of full containment on December 31, 2020, the fire had burned 518 km2 (128,050 acres) in Monterey County. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) installed seven rain gages in and near the Dolan Fire burn area in October 2021 to measure rainfall during two post-fire wet seasons. This data release contains rain records from the Mill Creek and upper Nacimiento River watersheds collected during water year 2023 (October 1, 2022, through spring 2023). Previous datasets from this region included an additional rain gage...

This data release provides bathymetric change grids of four geographic areas of San Francisco Bay, California, comparing digital elevation models (DEMs) created from bathymetric data collected in the 1970s and 1980s with DEMs created from bathymetric data collected in the 2010s and 2020. These types of change analyses can provide information on the quantities and patterns of erosion and deposition in San Francisco Bay over the 9 to 47 years between surveys, and they reveals that the bay floor lost about 34 million cubic meters of sediment between the intervening time period. Results from this study can be used to assess how San Francisco Bay has responded to changes in the system such as sea-level rise and variation...

Fine-sediment elemental chemistry and short-lived cosmogenic radionuclides (Beryllium-7, Cesium-137, and Lead-210) were quantified to describe land-based sediment sources and runoff to Olowalu Reef in February 2022. Charcoal counts, total organic carbon contents, and 76 urban- and wildfire-associated contaminants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were quantified to explore urban and wildfire effects in watersheds above Olowalu Reef and in reef sediment. Sampling occurred approximately two months after winter flooding and one month after tsunamigenic waves impinged on the Maui shore from the eruption of Hunga-Tonga volcano in the South Pacific. The USGS Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program...

Water from the San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz, California, was sampled to analyze for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) during the rainy seasons from 2008 to 2019 following drought conditions. The samples were collected using a US D-95 depth-integrated water sampler deployed from a bridge-box platform beneath a pedestrian bridge For each suspended-sediment sample, the water was collected in a 1-liter Nalgene bottle attached to the sampling device. After 14 days of settling time, excess water and organic matter were removed from the bottle using wet suction from a vacuum pump, and the sand fraction was then separated from silt and clay by filtration through a 0.063...
The Elwha and Glines Canyon dams were removed from the Elwha River in Washington State from 2011 to 2014. We collected data for a variety of metrics in the estuary and on the river delta before (2006-2011) and during (2012-2014) dam removal to assess how increased sediment transport and deposition affected habitats, vegetation, invertebrates, and fish.

The U.S. Geological Survey Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center collected data to investigate sediment dynamics in the shallows of San Pablo Bay and sediment exchange between bay shallows and the tidal salt marsh in China Camp State Park in a series of deployments between December 2013 and June 2016. This data release includes two related groups of data sets. The first group, denoted by names starting with CHC, is from deployments with stations in the San Pablo Bay channel, shallows, and mudflats, and within China Camp marsh. The second, denoted by names starting with SP, is from deployments at a subset of the stations in the San Pablo Bay shallows, collected during intervals between the CHC deployments. Stations...

The Elwha River, Washington, USA, was the site of the largest dam-removal project to date, in which two dams were removed between 2011 and 2014. Dam removal was made in stages over about a one-year period for the Elwha Dam (32 m high) and a three-year period for the Glines Canyon Dam (64 m high). This data release presents topographic and sediment grain size data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the Elwha River channel between 2006 and 2017. These data have been used to inform interpretations of geomorphic and sediment evolution in the Elwha River before, during, and after dam removal, including the response to several flood events (Draut and others, 2011; East and others, 2015; Warrick and others,...

Time-series data of water depth, velocity, turbidity, and temperature were acquired between 5 October 2015 and 21 March 2017 within the Monterey Canyon off of Monterey, CA, USA. In order to better understand the triggering, progression and evolution of turbidity currents in Monterey Submarine Canyon, an experiment was designed to directly measure velocity, suspended sediment and physical water properties (temperature, salinity and density) along the canyon axis during an 18-month period. Three moorings in the upper canyon (MS1, MS2, MS3) containing oceanographic instruments and Anderson- type sediment traps were deployed during three consecutive six-month periods (A: October 2015 - April 2016; B: April - October...

A three-dimensional hydrodynamic and sediment transport model of San Pablo and Suisun Bays was constructed using the Delft3D4 (D3D) modeling suite (Deltares, 2021a) to simulate water levels, flow, waves, and suspended sediment for time period of Nov 1 to Dec 31, 2014. This data release describes the construction and validation of the model application and provides input files suitable to run the model on D3D software version 4.04.01. Model description The San Pablo and Suisun Bay model was nested within an overall model for San Francisco Bay, also built using D3D. The overall model (figure 1A) was modified from the published tide model for San Francisco Bay (Elias and others, 2013). The 2D tide model was extended...

Time-series data of water surface elevation, waves, currents, temperature, and salinity collected between 17 May 2017 and 17 Jan 2018 off the southwest coast of Puerto Rico in support of a study on circulation and sediment transport dynamics over coral reefs. The data are available in NetCDF format, grouped together in zip files by instrument site location. A README.txt file details the files contained within each zip, including the file names, type of data collected, instrument that collected the data, depth, and start and end dates/times.

Bed sediments were collected by the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) in two submerged agricultural tracts, Liberty Island and Little Holland Tract, in the northern Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California. Samples were analyzed for grain size distribution, bulk density, or both. Analyses were conducted using PCMSC sediment lab standard techniques (see “Process Step” in metadata). This effort was part of a large interdisciplinary study supported by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to investigate how shallow water habitats in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta function and whether they provide good habitat for native fish species, including the Delta smelt. Bed sediment properties, including grain...

Time-series data of water surface elevation, waves, currents, temperature, and turbidity collected between November 2017 and March 2018 off the west coast of Maui, Hawaii, USA. The data are available in NetCDF format, grouped together in zip files by instrument site location. These data support a modeling study on the effects of potential watershed restoration on decreasing sediment loads to adjacent reefs (Storlazzi and others, 2023).

Sediment grain-size distributions, stable carbon isotope ratios (d13C), total carbon to total nitrogen ratios (C:N), short-lived radionuclides (Beryllium-7, Cesium-137, and Lead-210), concentrations of 76 parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and concentrations of 33 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were measured in the northern reach of San Francisco Bay (San Pablo and Suisun Bays), and in stream beds of the lower reaches of Napa River and Sonoma Creek, 5 months and 20 months after the 2017 Atlas and Nuns wildfires. New sites for sediment geochemistry analyses added 20 months post-fire included the lower reaches of Petaluma Creek and Suisun Slough, and in marsh sediment on Napa...
