As coal companies closed business in Indiana many times they deposited their records at the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS). The records in most cases were delivered in boxes or full filing cabinets without documentation. The IGS has preliminarily sorted through the records filing them by company and if possible county or Township-Range to make them discoverable. The records can contain anything from maps, analysis, logs with or without picks, descriptions, correspondence, etc.

Coal information for the state of Indiana. Mine reports are filed by county, 7.5-minute quadrangles contain rough mine extents, and coal production records gathered from various sources such as the US Office of Surface Mining and US Bureau of Mines contain mine and seam information. The information was gathered by the Indiana Geological Survey to use in their Coal Mine Directory.

Information about the dimension stone industry collected by the Industrial Minerals Section at the Indiana Geological Survey. Materials include records, articles, technical committee reports and meeting notes, cleaning and weathering information, and photos of dimension stone use and examples.
The National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS) began as a cooperative venture between the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and State geological agencies in 1975 and focused on the stratigraphy and chemistry of coal. The current component databases of NCRDS include: USTRAT: Stratigraphic data related to coal (e.g. drill holes, measured sections) USCHEM (COALQUAL): Ultimate, proximate, and USGS-generated major-, minor-, and trace-element data for coal samples collected by USGS and States. USCOAL: A historical database of coal resource estimates compiled from publications prior to 1978 The collections referenced here are for historical purposes. The most current and up-to-date coal information is available electronically...

Miscellaneous geochemical data and reports generated at the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS). They are currently boxed up in long-term storage since the geochemistry section of the IGS was disbanded. .A box measuring 15"H x 9.5"W x 20"L is considered a unit. The data needs to be evaluated and linked to the physical samples.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. Department of the Interior through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) jointly managed the Landsat program beginning in the early 1970s. NASA built and launched the satellites and the USGS preserved and distributed an archive of more than three million Landsat images to people in over 180 nations and territories. A joint effort between the Department of Interior and NASA began, ultimately producing the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) program. Perhaps the greatest contribution of Landsat is the ability to understand how the Earth's land surface is changing through time.
Indiana Geological Survey archive of materials about the Salem Limestone. Information form newspaper clippings, professional articles, and other miscellaneous sources.
Material collected by the industrial minerals section of the Indiana Geological Survey pertaining to gypsum. Materials are in the following format: photos, film, negatives, illustrations, cross-section blue prints, mylars, and project files and maps alphabetized by county.

This is the collection of original paper gamma-ray logs, copies and other items that are associated with the gamma-ray logs housed at the Indiana Geological Survey. They are stored in 12 file cabinets. This represents all of the original paper copies since 1978 when the collection began. Each log can be found filed in the original file, used mainly as a master file, as well as by county, the working file. The paper logs have been digitized made available to the public at https://igws.indiana.edu/borehole-logs in .las and .pdf format.

This collection includes records for non-water wells in Indiana. Some County Strat Test (CST) wells are pretty shallow boreholes located within the state. Most are related to petroleum exploration and development efforts. Data includes completion reports, scout tickets, geophysical logs, sample descriptions and test results. Some records include small-scale geophysical and colored driller's logs. This collection is housed in the Records Center at the Indiana Geological and Water Survey, Indiana University, Bloomington, and is accessible by appointment.
