This data release documents statistics for simulating structural stormwater runoff best management practices (BMPs) with the Stochastic Empirical Loading and Dilution Model (SELDM)(Granato, 2013). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) developed SELDM and the statistics documented in this report in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to indicate the risk for stormwater flows, concentrations, and loads to be above user-selected water-quality goals and the potential effectiveness of mitigation measures to reduce such risks. In SELDM, three treatment variables, hydrograph extension, runoff volume reduction, and water-quality treatment are modeled by using the trapezoidal distribution and the rank...

Introduction Potential offsite impacts to public and ecosystem health from exposure to current-use pesticides and other organic contaminants are a growing concern in Hawaiʻi. In response to these concerns, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture (HDOA), initiated a comprehensive pesticide-monitoring program of surface water in Hawaiʻi in 2016. The State of Hawaiʻi Department of Health (HDOH) is collaborating by providing technical and scientific assistance. The objectives of the Hawaiʻi pesticide-monitoring program include (1) documenting the occurrence and distribution of current-use pesticides in surface water of geographically distinct agricultural...

This dataset contains the reef profiles and resulting hydrodynamic outputs of the "Broad-range Estimator of Wave Attack in Reef Environments" (BEWARE-2) meta-process modeling system. A process-based, wave-resolving hydrodynamic model (XBeach Non-Hydrostatic+, "XBNH+") was used to create a large synthetic database for use in BEWARE-2, relating incident hydrodynamics and coral reef geomorphology to coastal flooding hazards on reef-lined coasts. Building on previous work, BEWARE-2 improves system understanding of reef hydrodynamics by examining the intrinsic reef and extrinsic forcing factors controlling runup and flooding on reef-lined coasts. We developed this meta-process model using a training dataset of hydrodynamics...

A monthly model of groundwater-transported nitrogen loads was developed for 12-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC12) watersheds on the north shore of Long Island Sound in coastal Connecticut and adjacent areas of New York and Rhode Island. As part of the analysis, potential management actions that upgraded septic systems or reduced fertilizer application to areas of turf-grass were also simulated. This compilation includes a zipped file (Tables.zip) of aggregated model outputs and datasets used in the model development. The zipped file contains a file dictionary (file_dictionary.csv) that includes the file name, title, and caption for each table and a data dictionary (data_dictionary.csv) that includes the variable...

Information on radon occurrence in groundwater systems is important to assess risks from radon exposure. For this study we developed a novel passive method to measure for dissolved radon in groundwater using a coupled diffusive membrane encasing an alpha track (AT) detector. The membrane is gas permeable but water impermeable, which allows for the deployment of AT detectors in aqueous environments. The alpha track (AT) detectors measure the alpha decay of radon as it etches a film seated in the AT. Empirical relations have been developed to convert the etches or tracks from the film of the detectors to a radon concentration. Encasing the AT detectors in a membrane (called MAT detectors) prevents water from deteriorating...

We conducted this study in Upper Mississippi River Pools 4 and 8 to document the occurrence and cover of Phalaris arundinacea and other forest floor plants in UMR floodplain forests and relate measures of abundance of Phalaris, and community composition and diversity to estimates of flood duration which can exhibit high spatial heterogeneity. We used modeled inundation duration which allowed us to sample at randomly selected forest “places” across a large spatial scale in forest areas that had a range of tree canopy cover and basal area. We also evaluated changes in plant composition, Phalaris and wood nettle cover and silver maple seedling persistence between years relative to modeled inundation duration. From...

This dataset is a digital image mosaic of sidescan for six sites where known rock structures exist in the St. Croix River. Sidescan sonar emits conical or fan-shaped beam down across a wide angle perpendicular to the path of the sensor through the water. The intensity of the acoustic reflections from the riverbed is recorded in a series of cross-track slices and when stitched together in a mosaic, form an image of the riverbed giving the user a view of the material and texture of the riverbed. Sidescan mosaics are being used in this project mainly as ancillary information to help view the rock structures and will also be used for investigating the use of hydroacoustic technologies for quantifying habitat for imperiled...

Potential evapotranspiration (PET), and reference evapotranspiration (ETo) are estimated at an approximately 1-kilometer spatial grid and a daily time-scale from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023 for Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and parts of Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee. PET and ETo were computed, using the Priestley-Taylor equation and the FAO Penman-Monteith method, respectively, on the basis of solar radiation, meteorological data (min/max temperature, min/max relative humidity, and mean wind speed at 2-meter height), and shortwave blue-sky albedo data. Solar radiation was computed from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) sensor data, blue-sky albedo was computed...
