This data release includes grids representing the depth and thickness of drinking-water withdrawal zones, polygons of hydrogeologic settings, an inventory of sources of well construction data, and summaries of data comparisons used to assess the depth of groundwater used for drinking-water supplies in the United States. Well construction data sources are documented in Table1_DataSources.xlsx. Data comparisons using the Mann-Whitney test to assess similarity between hydrogeologic settings were used to justify combining data where they were sparse (compare_neighbors_all_domestic.txt and compare_neighbors_all_public.txt). Water-supply-well depth varies geographically by water use and the type of well, which illustrates...

First Release: Aug 2017 Revised: May 2018 (ver. 1.1) Time-series data of velocity, pressure, turbidity, conductivity, and temperature were collected near the mouth of the Elwha River, Washington, USA, from December 2010 through October 2014, for the Department of Interior’s Elwha River Restoration project. As part of this project, the U.S. Geological Survey studied the effects of renewed sediment supplies on the coastal ecosystems before, during, and following the removal of two dams, Elwha and Glines Canyon, from the Elwha River. Removal of the dams reintroduced sediment stored in the reservoirs to the river, and the river moved much of this sediment to the coast. Several benthic tripods were instrumented with...

Introduction CONUS404 is a unique, high-resolution hydro-climate dataset appropriate for forcing hydrological models and conducting meteorological analysis over the contiguous United States. CONUS404, so named because it covers the CONtiguous United States for 40 years at 4-km resolution, was produced by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model simulations run by National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) as part of a collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Mission Area. In fact, CONUS404 includes 43 years of data (water years 1980-2022) and the spatial domain extends beyond the CONUS into Canada and Mexico, thereby capturing transboundary river basins and covering all contributing...

These data represent a timeseries of long-term vegetation and biocrust monitoring plots, dating from 1996 to 2021. These data were collected at/in Virginia Park, Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, Utah. These data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey, Southwest Biological Research Center in coordination with the US National Park Service. Data were collected via field...
This dataset is a collection of hyperspectral imagery profiles of 13 common algae associated with Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB). Data were retrieved from a hyperspectral microscope at, and with the cooperation of, the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Samples were collected from USGS water quality sampling efforts, and were also purchased from commercial vendors of biological materials. Data are shown in basic hyperspectral imagery form, transformed into the first derivative and corrected with a flat field algorithm to account for variations in locale lighting conditions. Sleeper populations are established populations of introduced species whose population growth is limited by one or more abiotic or biotic conditions. Sleeper populations pose an invasion risk if a change in those limiting conditions, such as climate change, enables population growth and invasion. With thousands of established species, it is critical that we identify and prioritize potential sleepers. Here, we identified non-native plants established in the northeastern United States with high impacts and the potential to expand with climate change. We focused on 118 taxa regulated by one or more state outside the Northeast plus 61 taxa recorded as invasive globally and under consideration for regulation in the Northeast....

This data release consists of Microsoft Excel workbooks, shapefiles, and a figure (png format) related to a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Florida Flood Hub for Applied Research and Innovation at the University of South Florida to derive projected future change factors for precipitation depth-duration-frequency (DDF) curves at 242 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Atlas 14 stations in Florida. The change factors were computed as the ratio of projected future (2020-59 or 2050-89) to historical (1966-2005) extreme-precipitation depths fitted to extreme-precipitation data using a constrained maximum likelihood (CML) approach as described in https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20225093....

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM), magnetic, and radiometric data were acquired in late February to early March 2018 along 2,364 line-kilometers in the Shellmound, Mississippi study area. Data were acquired by CGG Canada Services, Ltd. with three different helicopter-borne sensors: the CGG Canada Services, Ltd. RESOLVE frequency-domain AEM instrument that is used to map subsurface geologic structure at depths up to 100 meters, depending on the subsurface resistivity; a Scintrex CS-3 cesium vapor magnetometer that detects changes in deep (hundreds of meters to kilometers) geologic structure based on variations in the magnetic properties of different formations; and a Radiation Solutions RS-500 spectrometer that detects...

This dataset contains two phases of research. The first dataset includes several variables that were sampled across aspen stands in the Santa Rosa, Ruby, and Jarbidge mountain ranges (Great Basin, Northern Nevada, USA) in 2010 and 2011. Across 101 aspen sites, several plot-level attributes were collected (e.g. elevation, slope, aspen stand type). For each plot, data describing live trees (both those less than 7.5 cm diameter and those greater than/equal to 7.5 cm) are included, such as species, diameter, and age. The data set also includes information for dead trees greater than/equal to 7.5 cm diameter (e.g. species, location, diameter). The second dataset includes tree ring measurements (for live trees greater...

In this study, we create and evaluate a protocol to estimate the density, which can be used to estimate the abundance of terrestrial sound-producing animals from single automatic sound recorders. The protocol uses cue rates from the target species as well as sampling conditions and an estimate of the distance of the individual to the recorder based on the power of the sound. We applied our protocol to estimate the density of two Hawaiian forest bird species (Hawaiˊi ˊamakihi, Chlorodrepanis virens and ˊōmaˊo, Myadestes obscurus) on the island of Hawaiˊi, USA. We validate our approach by comparing our density estimations with others calculated at the same stations using a traditional point-transect distance sampling...
Near-field remote sensing methods were used to collect Doppler velocity and pulsed stage radar data at 10 conventional U.S. Geological Survey streamgages in river reaches with varying hydrologic and hydraulic characteristics. Basin sizes ranged from 381 to 66,200 square kilometers and included agricultural, desert, forest, mixed, and high-gradient mountain environments. During the siting and operational phases, radar-derived mean-channel (mean) velocity and discharge were computed using the Probability Concept (PC) and were compared against conventional instantaneous measurements and stage-discharge time series. During siting phase, radars were located, installed, and PC parameters computed. To test the efficacy...

Mainstem rivers are the backbone of a connected network of hydrologic units that cover the landscape. A mainstem connects a headwater source area to an outlet. This data release identifies the same mainstem paths in hydrographic datasets for the conterminous US. The Mainstems dataset includes cross walks between mainstem identifiers and several hydrographic datasets. These cross walk tables do not include geometry. It also includes a summary of all mainstems with headwater and outlet identifiers from other datasets for those mainstems that could be matched. The summary table has highly simplified geometry and should be used for visualization purposes only. Any analysis should rely on source dataset geometry. As...
