Nature’s Network Conservation Design depicts an interconnected network of lands and waters that, if protected, will support a diversity of fish, wildlife, and natural resources that the people of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region depend upon. This map serves as the “cover page” for the Nature’s Network (naturesnetwork.org) suite of products: it outlines some of the most important natural areas in the region and provides an entry point to learn more about the information used to identify them. The Conservation Design represents a combination of three Nature’s Network products: 1) the terrestrial core-connector network, 2) aquatic core areas, and 3) core habitat for imperiled species. The Terrestrial Core-connector...
The aquatic core networks is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). These datasets represent the aquatic core networks, which include lotic and lentic core areas and aquatic buffers. NOTE - The aquatic buffers dataset has been converted to integers and only contain values of 90 -100 (0.9 - 1) for online purposes, the original dataset is included in the download and contains all values. All datasets in this map are included in the download. The aquatic core networks represents intact, well-connected stream reaches, lakes, and ponds in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region that, if protected as part of stream networks and watersheds, will continue to support a broad...
Habitat Condition for Imperiled Species is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. This product represents a regional network of habitats critical for sustaining populations of imperiled species, currently based on over 600 Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). A number of additional datasets that augment or complement Habitat Condition for Imperiled Species, including Core Habitat for Imperiled Species, are also available in the Nature’s Network gallery. A detailed technical...

The download for this dataset includes the full Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System (NAHCS): stream size, stream temperature, stream gradient, stream geology, lakes, and catchments. This dataset represents the results (9/30/2008) of the Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System (NAHCS) GIS map for streams and rivers. This classification focused on mapping a stream habitat types across 13 northeastern states (ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DC, DE, VA, WV). Stream and river centerlines were extracted from the USGS National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NH-Plus) 2006 1:100,000 data. These reaches were attributed and placed into classes representing their biopysical setting in terms of...

This dataset was last updated February 2017. This version incorporates a revised version of the land cover classification, Terrestrial and Aquatic Habitat Map (DSLland), Version 3.1 developed by the University of Massachusetts, which included the addition of The Nature Conservancy’s Northeast lakes and ponds classification. The American Woodcock (Scolopax minor) is a forest-dwelling shorebird well-known for its spring courtship flights and popular as a gamebird. It has been chosen to represent the habitat needs of other species of wildlife that also use young, moist hardwoods and mixed forests. This dataset depicts the potential capability of the landscape throughout the Northeastern United States to provide habitat...

This dataset is a component of a complete package of products from the Connect the Connecticut project. Connect the Connecticut is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conserving the Connecticut River Watershed for future generations, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural ecosystems they inhabit. Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset identifies large and medium rivers within the Connecticut River watershed that provide habitat for five anadromous fish species: American shad, blueback herring, shortnose sturgeon, alewife, and sea lamprey. Habitat includes the mainstem and major tributaries of the Connecticut River...
Habitat Importance for Imperiled Species is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project. Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. Important Habitats are a group of critical terrestrial and aquatic habitats for imperiled species. The dataset was created by studying the overlap of 600 Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) and their documented occurrences (from tens of thousands of data points) with terrestrial and aquatic habitats mapped by The Nature Conservancy and UMASS. *NOTE - The download of this data also includes Habitat Condition...

This layer was created from the Ecological Systems Map (ESM+, also called DSL Land) to highlight a number of habitat types specifically. We used the Summarize Zones function in ArcMap along with the Protected Areas Dataset and the ESM+ layer to identify the extent and protection status of all ecological systems (macrogroup level) across the 4 northeast states of NY, VT, NH, and ME. We also used information on potential habitats for Regional Species of Greatest Conservation Need (RSGCN) for these 4 states from a prior crosswalk of ESM+ macrogroups with Natureserve habitat types completed by Glennon and Curran (2013). The following habitat types were identified as (1) making up less than 10% of NYS (most are <...

Probability of Development, Northeast U.S. is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. This index represents the integrated probability of development occurring sometime between 2010 and 2080 at the 30 m cell level. It was based on models of historical patterns of urban growth in the Northeast, including the type (low intensity, medium intensity and high intensity), amount and spatial pattern of development, and incorporates the influence of factors such as geophysical conditions...

The objective of this classification was to create a simplified set of stream and river habitat types based on the Northeast Aquatic Habitat Classification System (Olivero and Anderson 2008) and GIS map for 13 northeastern states (ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, WV, and DC.) that could be used in the Northeast Stream and River Habitat Guide (available at http://nature.ly/HabGuide). The goal was to collapse the existing 258 types down to ~25 types for reporting in the habitat guide. The habitat guide contains a description of each stream and river type, a distribution map, a photo, associated common and rare species, a crosswalk to state aquatic community types, and a summary of current condition...

To evaluate the potential effects of climate change on wildlife habitat and ecological integrity in the northeastern United States from 2010 to 2080, a University of Massachusetts Amherst team derived a set of climate projections at a fine spatial resolution for the entire Northeast. The projections are based upon publicly available climate models. This dataset represents the growing season degree days (number of days in which the average temperature is > 10 degrees C) using one of two IPCC greenhouse gas concentration scenarios (RCP8.5). The dataset is intended to represent typical growing season degree days for the years 2010-2080 rather than the actual growing season degree days. MAP UNITS ARE THE SUM OF DEGREES...

The projections are based upon publicly available climate models. This dataset represents projections of the total average annual precipitation (mm/year) using one of two IPCC greenhouse gas concentration scenarios (RCP4.5). The set of terrestrial ecosystem core areas (unstratified) is one of two versions of terrestrial and wetland core areas that are part of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. While the other version of terrestrial cores (Terrestrial Core-Connector Network, Northeast U.S.) is considered by the planning team to be the primary version for users, this version is also made available for reference and use. A number of additional datasets are also available in the Nature’s Network gallery:...
