This data release contains the boundaries of assessment units and input data for the assessment of oil and gas resources in the Upper Cretaceous Austin Chalk Group and Tokio and Eutaw Formations in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Arkansas. The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown herein as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing...
This data release contains the boundaries of assessment units and input data for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas in the Eagle Ford group and Associated Cenomanian-Turonian Strata, Texas Gulf Coast. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown herein as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties...
The northern Gulf of Mexico coast spans two major climate gradients and represents an excellent natural laboratory for developing climate-influenced ecological models. In this project, we used these zones of remarkable transition to develop macroclimate-based models for quantifying the regional responses of coastal wetland ecosystems to climate variation. In addition to providing important fish and wildlife habitat and supporting coastal food webs, these coastal wetlands provide many ecosystem goods and services including clean water, stable coastlines, food, recreational opportunities, and stored carbon. Our objective was to examine and forecast the effects of macroclimatic drivers on wetland ecosystem structure...

Sandbars of large sand-bedded rivers of the Central U.S. serve important ecological functions to many species, including the endangered Interior Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) (ILT). ILT are colonial birds which feed on fish and nest primarily on riverine sandbars during their annual breeding season of approximately May through July, depending on region. During this time, ILT require bare sand of sufficient elevation so as not to be inundated during the period between nest initiation and fledging of hatchlings. ILT were originally listed as endangered due in part to decreases in available sandbar habitat from river channelization and impoundment. Sandbars in Central U.S. rivers used by ILT are highly dynamic,...

In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) completed a probabilistic assessment of the volume of technically recoverable oil resources available if current carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) technologies were applied in amenable oil reservoirs underlying the onshore and State waters area of the conterminous United States. The assessment also includes estimates of the magnitude of CO2 stored (retained) resulting from CO2-EOR activities. The USGS assessment team evaluated 3524 oil reservoirs that were miscible to injected CO2. The assessed reservoirs are located in 185 previously defined USGS plays in 33 petroleum provinces (or basins) of 7 national regions. All candidate reservoir data, except 12 reservoirs...

The input form provides a record of the complete input values required for the quantitative assessment of water and proppant associated with oil and gas production for the continuous oil and gas resource in a geologically defined Assessment Unit. The same input form template is used for all such assessments. Each USGS water and proppant assessment builds from a USGS petroleum assessment that provides the geologic foundation and determination of assessment units for the water and proppant assessment.
