As a low-lying island nation, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is at the forefront of exposure to climate change impacts, including, primarily, inundation (coastal flooding). Increased water levels can stem from episodic events (storm surge, wave run-up, king tides) or from chronic conditions (long term sea-level rise). Land elevation is the primary geophysical variable that determines exposure to inundation in coastal settings. Accordingly, accurate coastal elevation data are a critical input for assessments of inundation exposure and vulnerability. Previous research has demonstrated that the quality of data used for elevation-based assessments must be well understood and applied to properly model potential...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) has started to initiate the development of pilot 3D National Topography Models to generate 3-dimensional surface elevation models that integrate river topographic bare-earth elevation surfaces with channel bed bathymetry. Detailed knowledge of integrated river system topography, bathymetry, and topobathymetry, is essential for habitat restoration, hydrologic modeling, and other key science applications such as flood mapping and identification of fluvial geomorphic features. An integrated 1-meter topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM) for the Kootenai River near Bonners Ferry, Idaho, has been developed for this first pilot study. The Kootenai...
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists conducted field work efforts during February 15-23, 2017 and April 10-25, 2019 in the mangrove forests of Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) with logistical assistance from the Micronesia Conservation Trust (MCT) and field assistance from the Conservation Society of Pohnpei and the Pohnpei Department of Forestry. The field team combined the surveying technologies and techniques of Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveying, total station surveying, and differential leveling to measure elevations on critical features in the mangrove forests, including the elevations of water level recorders, sediment coring locations, and Surface...

Note: this data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9XM3NKD Bathymetric LiDAR technology was used to collect riverbed elevation data along the Potomac River. In support of this effort, a bathymetric survey with a boat-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) was conducted in the study area during October 4-7, 2021. The study area consisted of four verification reaches on the Potomac River including: 1) Williamsport accessed through the Williamsport Park boat ramp below Conococheague Creek and RTE 11 (Williamsport), 2) Big Slackwater above C&O Canal Dam #4 accessed through the Big Slackwater Boat Ramp (Dam4), 3) Four Locks above C&O Canal Dam #5 accessed...

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists conducted field data collection efforts between March 8th and 25th, 2021 at four sites along coastal North Carolina and South Carolina using high accuracy surveying technologies. The work was initiated as an effort to validate a topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM) produced for the area that was directly impacted by Hurricane Florence in 2018. The goal was to compare the airborne lidar and sonar derived TBDEM to data collected through more traditional means (e.g. Global Navigational Satellite System (GNSS) surveying). In addition, coastal dunes were mapped with ground based lidar (GBL) for computation of dune metrics. The Hurricane Florence TBDEM will support the...
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists conducted field data collection efforts between August 17th and 28th, 2020 over a large stretch of the Niobrara River in Nebraska using high accuracy surveying technologies. The work was initiated as an effort to validate commercially acquired topobathymetric light detection and ranging (lidar) data. The goal was to compare and validate the airborne lidar data to topographic, bathymetric, structural, and infrastructural data collected through more traditional means (e.g. Global Navigational Satellite System (GNSS) surveying). The airborne topobathymetric lidar data will be used for characterization of endangered species aquatic habitat, improving the understanding of fluvial...
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and University of Hawaii - Mānoa (UH) scientists conducted field data collection efforts from August 19th - 27th, 2019 at Pu‘uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. The data collection efforts utilized a combination of remote sensing technologies to map the topography, critical infrastructure, and most importantly, the cultural assets of Pu‘uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park. The USGS and UH team collected Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), total station, and ground based lidar (GBL) data, along with utilizing Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) to collect imagery and UAS lidar to map these features. This data release contains shapefiles of...
To support Hurricane Florence impact modeling of storm-induced flooding and sediment transport, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Coastal National Elevation Database (CoNED) Applications Project has created an integrated 1-meter topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM) for coastal North Carolina, and South Carolina. High-resolution coastal topobathymetric data are required to characterize flooding, storms, and sea-level rise inundation hazard zones and other earth science applications, such as the development of sediment transport and storm surge models. This TBDEM consists of the best available multi-source topographic and bathymetric elevation data for the Coastal Carolinas including neighboring bays, estuaries,...

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists conducted field data collection efforts during the weeks of September 9-13 and November 18-22, 2019, using a combination of technologies to map and validate topography, vegetation, and features in two areas of interest (AOI's) in north central Colorado. The western AOI included land managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. The eastern AOI included agricultural and urban areas. The work was initiated as an effort to test and evaluate the Leica Geosystems CountryMapper* sensor. The CountryMapper is a hybrid sensor that collects imagery and light detection and ranging (lidar) data simultaneously. The CountryMapper has the potential to collect data...
Vertical accuracy of elevation data in coastal environments is critical because small variations in elevation can affect an area’s exposure to waves, tides, and storm-related flooding. Elevation data contractors typically quantify the vertical accuracy of digital elevation models (DEMs) developed using light detection and ranging data acquisition on a per-project basis to gauge whether the datasets meet quality and accuracy standards. To better understand the vertical accuracy of DEMs along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coast, we collated over 5200 contractor points for this region that were collected for per-project-level analyses produced for assessing DEMs acquired for the U.S. Geological Survey’s 3D Elevation...

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) scientists conducted field data collection efforts during the week of April 8th - 14th, 2018, using a combination of remote sensing technologies to map riverbank and wetland topography and vegetation at four sites in the Chesapeake Bay Region of Virginia. The four sites are located along the James, Severn, and York Rivers. The work was initiated to evaluate the utility of different remote sensing technologies in mapping river bluff and wetland topography and vegetation for change detection and sediment transport modeling. The USGS team collected Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), total station, and ground based lidar (GBL) data...

Airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) can provide high-quality topographic information over large areas. Lidar is an active remote sensing technology that employs laser ranging in near-infrared and green spectral wavelengths to provide three-dimensional (3D) point information for objects, including Earth’s surface, vegetation, and infrastructure. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Geospatial Program (NGP) 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) seeks to systematically acquire airborne topographic lidar for the conterminous U.S. (conus), Hawaii, and the U.S. territories. A series of field accuracy assessment surveys, using conventional surveying methods (i.e. total station and Global Navigation Satellite System...
