This is a zip folder of geographic line data in three formats that represent the distance sampling transects. All these were produced from the Rmarkdown code found in the file YKD-sample-frame.Rmd. All coordination reference systems are in EPSG:4326. The overall survey area is define as the YKD nest plot survey area, found under the MBM project mbm7wa_002 at https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/6452f8a7d34eefd5da83c5ff.

This is the raw nest card data that was recorded from a digital device in the field. It undergoes quality control and is combined with nest data records transcribed from paper cards, and waypoint location from handheld GPSs. This is the the raw source used to produce the file Nest_Distance_QC_2022.csv. See R code in wrangle_2022.R for specific processing step and source data.

In the 1960s, US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Alaska Region Migratory Bird Management (MBM-AK) developed a protocol for aerial Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) and Tundra Swan (C. columbianus) abundance surveys in Alaska that was used by several government agencies and private entities through 2015. This standardized survey protocol allowed data collected by these diverse organizations to be stored together in a common digital archival system called the Alaska Swan Database, which is maintained by MBM-AK. Contributions to the database ranged from relatively small, localized surveys to the statewide quinquennial Alaska Trumpeter Swan Survey. In spring of 2022 a major high pathogenic avian influenza outbreak caused widespread observations of dead and symptomatic birds in North America, including on the Yukon Delta during the nesting season. Observations of sick and dead birds were collected during the nest distance sampling survey using the same distance sampling protocol so that an estimate of the number of bird carcasses could be produced. This is the main quality controlled data set for dead and sick birds recorded during the survey and used for the distance sampling analysis and population estimates. This data set record the actual length of searched transect within the study area. By design transects extended outside the study area in some case or logistical or mechanical issue prevented all transects from being searched. This record of search effort was re-contrasted from observer track files, field notes, and examination of other data. This is R code used to clean, quality controll and format the distance sampling data used for analysis. Main issues are detailed in comment within the code. Raw data is read in, clean, and formatted for analysis. Major outputs are, Effort_2022.csv, Nest_Distance_QC_2022.csv, Dead_Distance_QC_2022.csv. Input are raw transcribed data from nest cards (NestCards_20221116.csv), waypoint data from three different devices.

Spectacled eiders were listed as Threatened under the ESA in 1993 primarily due to a 96% population decline on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in Alaska (YKD), one of three breeding areas worldwide. The Spectacled Eider Recovery Plan ties recovery criteria to numbers of breeding pairs in each of the three nesting areas (YKD, North Slope, Arctic Russia). Lewis et al. (2019) compared ground-based nest abundance estimates to aerially estimated indicated breeding pairs to provide a means to assess recovery status from detection corrected aerial surveys.
