The Prairie Pothole Region spans parts of North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Iowa and south-central Canada and contains millions of wetlands that provide habitat for breeding and migrating birds. Because it is the continent’s most important breeding area for waterfowl, conservation and management largely focuses on protecting habitat for nesting ducks. However, other wetland-dependent birds also rely on this region, and it is important to understand the degree to which habitat conserved for ducks provides habitat for other species, and how the quality of this habitat will be affected by climate change. This collection of maps shows fluvial geomorphic features of the Colorado River bottomland including river channel boundaries at high flow (31,300 cubic ft/sec on 06/28/2011 at the Cisco gage) and at lower flow (3,410 cubic ft/sec on 09/06/2010 at the Cisco gage). Also shown is the bottomland boundary delineating the currently active fluvial surface; the bottomland is subdivided by both reaches and bottomland kilometers for reference. Centerlines for the bottomland and 2010 river channel are included, also.

An extreme flood in 2016 caused widespread culvert blockages and road failures across northern Wisconsin, including extensive damage along steep tributaries and ravines in the Marengo River watershed. Along with the flooding, there were fluvial erosion hazards (FEH) associated with a large amount of erosion in headwater areas. Of special concern were FEHs associated with gullying, loss of wetland storage, and valley-side mass wasting. This map shows current, near-term, and long-term estimates of fire occurrence potential due to human and natural causes. These estimates were developed using a Maxent model of 30 years of human and natural fire occurrences predicted against a variety of surfaces including elevation, lightning density, distance to roads and urban areas, vegetation type, and climate. The only factors that were varied to create the near and long-term estimates were climate.

Cutthroat trout (CT; Oncorhynchus clarki ssp.) are extremely imperiled owing to a variety of stressors. Changing climate is adding to these stressors that have already relegated CT in the Southern Rocky Mountains to less than 35% of their native habitat. The Rio Grande CT (O. c. virginalis) occupies 12% of its native range and is currently under review for ESA listing as federally threatened. This raster depicts the percentage of lithological magnesium oxide (MgO) content in surface or near surface geology. We derived these rasters by calculating the average percent MgO content for each map unit in combined surficial-bedrock geologic maps. We used state geologic maps (Preliminary Integrated Geologic Map Databases for the United States, Open File Reports 2004-1355, 2005-1305, 2005-1323, 2005-1324, 2005-1325, 2005-1351, and 2006-1272), which depict surficial geology instead of bedrock when the surficial layers are sufficiently deep. High-latitude regions are experiencing rapid and extensive changes in ecosystem composition and function as the result of increases in average air temperature. Increasing air temperatures have led to widespread thawing and degradation of permafrost, which in turn has affected ecosystems, socioeconomics, and the carbon cycle of high latitudes. Research shows that the distribution of permafrost is heterogeneous in nature and that permafrost responds to a wide range of ecological factors. Up to 12 different prey fish species were sampled with a 12-m bottom trawl during April, July, and September along two Lake Huron transects (Thunder Bay, Hammond Bay). At each transect in each month, two replicate 10-min tows were conducted at each of three depths (18, 46, 82 m) during the day and night. Once the fish were onboard in a given tow, they were sorted to species, weighed (in aggregate), and up to 50 individuals per species were measured to the nearest total length.
