The Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CASCs) partner with natural and cultural resource managers, tribes and indigenous communities, and university researchers to provide science that helps fish, wildlife, ecosystems, and the communities they support adapt to climate change. The CASCs provide managers and stakeholders with information and decision-making tools to respond to the effects of climate change. While each CASC works to address specific research priorities within their respective region, CASCs also collaborate across boundaries to address issues within shared ecosystems, watersheds, and landscapes. These shapefiles represent the 9 CASC regions and the national CASC that comprise the CASC network, highlighting...

This data release consists of multi-band 30-meter x 30-meter pixel rasters of estimated population and domestic self-supplied water withdrawals in Rhode Island between July 2014 and June 2021. Population raster data were generated using a national data product of 2010 population spatially distributed across land cover data and U.S. Census Bureau data of population growth estimates to adjust populations for each year 2014-2021. Estimates for changes in population between winter and summer months are also included to generate seasonal population estimates. The coefficients used to describe these variations in populations for each U.S. Census Bureau block group in Rhode Island are included in this data release. Estimated...
Hurricane Maria caused widespread landsliding throughout Puerto Rico during September 2017. Previous detailed landslide inventories following the hurricane include Bessette-Kirton et al. (2017, 2019). Here we continue that work with an in-depth look at a portion of northwest Naranjito, which is a municipality in the northeastern part of the main island. To study a characteristic sample of landslides in Naranjito, we mapped all visible individual landslides in an approximately triangular area 2.3 km wide by 1.9 km long. The boundary of our mapping was defined by previous studies (Bessette-Kirton et al., 2019). We used aerial imagery collected between 9-15 October 2017 (Quantum Spatial, Inc., 2017) to map landslide...

In late September 2017, intense precipitation associated with Hurricane Maria caused extensive landsliding across Puerto Rico. Much of the Utuado municipality in central Puerto Rico was severely impacted by landslides. Landslide density in this region was mapped as greater than 25 landslides/km2 (Bessette-Kirton et al., 2019). In order to better understand the controlling variables of landslide occurrence and runout in this region, four 2.5-km2 study areas were selected and all landslides within were mapped in detail using remote-sensing data. Included in the data release are five separate shapefiles: geographic areas representing the mapping extent of the four distinct areas (map areas, filename: map_areas), initiation...

We created a single map of surface water presence by intersecting water classes from available land cover products (National Wetland Inventory, Gap Analysis Program, National Land Cover Database, and Dynamic Surface Water Extent) across the U.S. state of Arizona. We derived classified samples for four wetland classes from the harmonized map: water, herbaceous wetlands, wooded wetlands, and non-wetland cover. In Google Earth Engine (GEE) we developed a random forest model that combined the training data with spatially explicit predictor variables of vegetation greenness indices, wetness indices, seasonal index variation, topographic variables, and hydrologic parameters. The final product is a wall-to-wall map of...

The sagebrush ecosystem spans over 175 million acres in the western United States, and is biologically, culturally, and economically significant to the country. Many disturbances including prolonged drought, pinyon-juniper encroachment, and cycles of invasive grasses and wildfire, pose significant threats to the resilience of the sagebrush biome. To conserve the sagebrush biome and promote community and economic sustainability, the Department of the Interior’s bureaus and offices are working together with many public and private partners to implement a “defend and grow the core” approach to conserve remaining intact sagebrush habitat and ecosystem functions, as well as restore other habitat types which are important...

This data release contains phytoplankton data and vertical profile measurements of water quality and light in oligotrophic (low nutrient) lakes within the Adirondack Park, New York State. Data were collected between June and October 2021 at five lakes. Four lake locations (Nearshore, Open Water, Layer, Bloom) were sampled representing one of four sample types (Bottom Sediment, Surface Water, Bloom Material, Layer). Water-quality field parameters (water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration and percent saturation, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and fluorescent dissolved organic material) were measured at each sampling location from the surface to the...

The karstic Edwards and Trinity aquifers are classified as major sources of water in south-central Texas by the Texas Water Development Board, and both are classified as major aquifers by the State of Texas. The Edwards and Trinity aquifers developed because of the original depositional history of the carbonate limestone and dolomite rocks that contain them, and the primary and secondary porosity, diagenesis, fracturing, and faulting that modified the porosity, permeability, and transmissivity of each aquifer and of the geologic units separating the aquifers. Previous studies such as those by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Edwards Aquifer Authority (EAA) have mapped the geology, hydrostratigraphy, and...

This data set includes estimates of aquatic chlorophyll a concentration and reservoir temperature for Blue Mesa Reservoir, CO. A Random Forest modeling approach was trained to model near-surface aquatic chlorophyll a using near-coincident Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and water samples analyzed for chlorophyll a concentration. The trained chlorophyll a model was applied to Sentinel-2 imagery to produce maps of modeled chlorophyll a concentrations at 10 m spatial resolution for May through October for 2016 through 2023. Chlorophyll a concentrations for three sections (basins) of Blue Mesa Reservoir were extracted from the raster data to produce time-series of modeled chlorophyll a concentration summary statistics...

In late September 2017, intense precipitation associated with Hurricane Maria caused extensive landsliding across Puerto Rico. Much of the Lares municipality in central-western Puerto Rico was severely impacted by landslides. Landslide density in this region was mapped as greater than 25 landslides/km2 (Bessette-Kirton et al., 2019). In order to better understand the controlling variables of landslide occurrence and runout in this region, three 2.5-km2 study areas were selected and all landslides within were mapped in detail using remote-sensing data. Included in the data release are five separate shapefiles: geographic areas representing the mapping extent of the four distinct areas (map areas, filename: map_areas),...

As part of the larger Great Lakes Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI) , the U.S. Geological Survey Mercury Research Laboratory (MRL) completed a binational assessment partnering with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), Environmental Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Michigan-DNR (MI-DNR), University of Minnesota-Duluth Natural Resources Research Institute (UM-NRRI), and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), to assess contaminant concentrations within seston, mussels, preyfish, waters, and surface sediments within Lake Huron. All matrices were assessed for mercury and methylmercury concentrations to examine spatial trends of mercury within the lakes. Sediments...

Information on radon occurrence in groundwater systems is important to assess risks from radon exposure. For this study we developed a novel passive method to measure for dissolved radon in groundwater using a coupled diffusive membrane encasing an alpha track (AT) detector. The membrane is gas permeable but water impermeable, which allows for the deployment of AT detectors in aqueous environments. The alpha track (AT) detectors measure the alpha decay of radon as it etches a film seated in the AT. Empirical relations have been developed to convert the etches or tracks from the film of the detectors to a radon concentration. Encasing the AT detectors in a membrane (called MAT detectors) prevents water from deteriorating...

The data release also contains biochemical trait concentrations (nitrogen, nonstructural carbohydrates, holocellulose, and lignin) from physical samples used to evaluate biochemical trait mapping of cash crop and cover crop residue. Data collection occurred at the USDA-ARS...
