The Stream Conditions of Chester County Biological Monitoring Network was established by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Chester County Water Resources Authority in 1969. Benthic-macroinvertebrate, habitat, and stream chemistry data were collected annually from 1998-2021 at 18 fixed location sites. Additionally, nine flexible location sites were selected and sampled annually from 1998-2021. Some of the flexible location sites were sampled more than once over the study period. All data were collected in the fall months (October-November) during baseflow conditions. The benthic-macroinvertebrate data collected was used to calculate six metrics and to establish an index of biotic integrity for each sample, while...

This bathymetric dataset provides an update to the stage-storage relation for Quail Lake (reservoir) located in the El Dorado National Forest, Calif. Bathymetric data was collected using a multibeam echo sounder to provide near-complete coverage and was merged with USGS 3DEP lidar to compute a DEM of the lake and near shore. The DEM was used to computed storage and surface area for a range of stage elevations. Results show that the spillway elevation was 6799.3 feet (NAVD88) and the crest elevation was 6802.5 feet (NAVD88). At the spillway elevation the storage was 141.74 ac-ft with a surface area of 14.20 ac. At the crest elevation the storage was 190.05 ac-ft with a surface area of 15.89 ac.

The Maumee River transports huge loads of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to Lake Erie. The increased concentrations of N and P are causing eutrophication of the lake, creating hypoxic zones, and contributing to phytoplankton blooms. It is hypothesized that the P loads are a major contributor to harmful algal blooms that occur in the western basin of Lake Erie, particularly in summer. The Maumee River has been identified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a priority watershed where action needs to be taken to reduce nutrient loads. This study quantified rates of biogeochemical processes affecting downstream flux of N and P by 1) measuring indices of potential sediment P retention and 2) measuring...

These tables serve as input data for hierarchical models investigating interactions between raven density and Greater Sage-grouse nest success. Observations were recorded over an 11 year time period, spanning from 2009 through 2019. The model is run in JAGS via R, the code is publicly available via the U.S. Geological Survey's GitLab (O'Neil et al. 2023). We recommend not making any changes or edits to the tables unless the user is experienced with hierarchical modeling. A total of 27 temperature sensors were deployed along the lower 90 miles of the Yakima River at 7 locations where cold water had been previously observed. These 7 cold-water areas had 3 to 6 temperature sensors installed to document the extent and duration of these cold-water areas and their impacts on mainstem temperatures of the Lower Yakima River. Cold-water areas included the mouths of tributaries, alongside channels, and within alcoves. Sensor deployments ranged from 1 to 2 years beginning in October 2018. All temperature data are included in the Yakima.temperatures.zip folder. Details of each monitoring location are provided in the site.locs.csv file. In addition to the raw data and site location information,...

In support of U.S. Geological Survey invasive carp research examining aggregations of invasive carp in the tail water of dams, water velocity measurements were made at cross sections in the Illinois River below Starved Rock Lock and Dam on June 16, 2021. A total of 16 cross sections were surveyed, with two transects per cross section. Water depth and crew safety limited the extent of the survey. The discharge in the Illinois River at Starved Rock Lock and Dam at the time of data collection was approximately 185.7 cubic meters per second. The data were processed in the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (VMT) v.4.09 (Parsons and others, 2013) to obtain a depth-averaged velocity field for each cross section from paired transects...

A method was described for determination of trace levels of silicon by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) from hydrofluoric (HF) digests of biological samples. The volatility of silicon in HF digests was examined with synthetic solutions as well as soil and mine waste samples. A digestion scheme was optimized to achieve complete dissolution, avoid loss of volatile silicon species and produce sample solutions that can be directly analyzed by ICP-MS. The performance of the method performance was validated by analysis of a number plant and tissue certified reference materials for silicon by ICP-MS. The method was then applied to the determination of silicon from lung biopsy tissues obtained from...

This data release contains inputs for and outputs from hydrologic simulations for the conterminous United States (CONUS) using the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) version 5.1.0 and the USGS National Hydrologic Model infrastructure (NHM, Regan and others, 2018). Historical simulations using the Maurer forcings (Maurer and others, 2002) were conducted for the period 1950-2010. This metadata record documents the simulation output files for simulations ran using the dynamic parameters file. The output files are aggregated at the HUC4 level and are grouped and downloadable by HUC2 hydrologic region. Each zip folder contains identical information, just for a different region and set of hydrologic response...

Amphibians are vulnerable to extinction owing, partly, to altered physiological processes induced by projected global warming and drying. Understanding the mechanisms behind their responses is essential to formulate adaptation strategies for their conservation. Puerto Rico harbors 15 endemic Eleutherodactylus frogs considered vulnerable to extinction due to poor vagility and sensitivity to environmental variability. Herein are reported the effects of four temperature treatments (15, 20, 25, and 30 degrees Centigrade) on metabolic rates associated with specific dynamic action (SDA) and standard metabolic rates (SMR) of four representative species of Eleutherodactylus employing a respirometer. All species in either...

We created a comprehensive estimate of potential distribution for a subset of 17 ecosystem modifying invasive plants (EMIPs) in Hawaiʻi. This work uses methods that integrate a wide set of data sources including agency and citizen science data, but perhaps more importantly, the integration of regional and global distribution information for these species. We built three sets of ensemble species distribution models (SDMs) for each species. We first built global and regional ensemble distribution models for each species. Then, to create a comprehensive estimate of potential invasive species distribution for our study species in Hawaiʻi, we built nested regional models that integrate our global and regional ensemble...

Global downscaled projections are now some of the most widely used climate datasets in the world, however, they are rarely examined for representativeness of local climate or the plausibility of their projected changes. Here we show steps to improve the utility of two such global datasets (CHELSA and WorldClim2) to provide credible climate scenarios for regional climate change impact studies. Our approach is based on three steps: 1) Using a standardized baseline period, comparing available global downscaled projections with regional observation-based datasets and regional downscaled datasets (if available); 2) bias correcting projections using observation-based data; and 3) creating ensembles to make use of the...

This work uses methods that integrate a wide set of data sources including agency and citizen science data, but perhaps more importantly, the integration of regional and global distribution information for these species.
