The Mohorovicic discontinuity or 'Moho' maps the boundary between the earth's crust and mantle and is defined by an abrupt change in seismic velocity due to changes in the density of rocks between the crust and mantle. GeoTIFF grids that map depth to Moho (crustal thickness) for the United States and Canada, and for Australia are provided in this report and were used as evidential layers in developing prospectivity models for basin-hosted Pb-Zn mineralization (Lawley and others, 2022). A composite grid of Moho depths across the United States and Canada was created using data from Shen and Ritzwoller (2016) for the conterminous United States, from Zhang and others (2019) for Alaska, and from Schetselaar and Snyder...

This data release presents data for 5-m resolution multibeam-bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter data of the northern Channel Islands region, southern California. In 2004 the U.S. Geological Survey, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center collected multibeam-bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter data in the northern Channel Islands region, southern California. The region was mapped aboard the R/V Ewing using a Kongsberg Simrad EM-1002 multibeam echosounder. These data were previously published on-line at http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2005/1153/. In this data release the data have been reprocessed to a finer spatial resolution (5-m versus 15-m) using more modern processing techniques. Due to the large file sizes the entire...

Version 10.0 of these data are part of a larger U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) project to develop an updated geospatial database of mines, mineral deposits, and mineral regions in the United States. Mine and prospect-related symbols, such as those used to represent prospect pits, mines, adits, dumps, tailings, etc., hereafter referred to as “mine” symbols or features, have been digitized from the 7.5-minute (1:24,000, 1:25,000-scale; and 1:10,000, 1:20,000 and 1:30,000-scale in Puerto Rico only) and the 15-minute (1:48,000 and 1:62,500-scale; 1:63,360-scale in Alaska only) archive of the USGS Historical Topographic Map Collection (HTMC), or acquired from available databases (California and Nevada, 1:24,000-scale...

Samples of vein-type magmatic-steam alunite were collected over several field seasons from five mines and prospects (L&N, Mt. Edna, Christmas, upper Mineral Products, and Close In) in the Alunite Ridge and Deer Trail Mountain area, Marysvale, Utah, as well as a sample from the Deer Trail mine workings from which sericite was separated. The magmatic-steam alunite and sericite were analyzed by the 40Ar/39Ar method to constrain the timing and duration of magmatic activity associated with the intrusion of two porphyry stocks beneath Alunite Ridge and Deer Trail Mountain. In addition, a sample of a highly altered rhyolitic quartz porphyry dike was collected from the upper Mineral Products mine, from which zircons were...

This directory contains a national-scale magnetic anomaly grid for Australia (Geophysical Acquistion and Processing Section, 2020) and derivative grids calculated from the national scale compilation. The data are provided as GeoTIFF grids covering the country of Australia of reduced-to-pole (RTP) magnetic anomaly data, the 1st vertical derivative of the RTP, the horizontal gradient magnitude pseudo-gravity calculated from the RTP grid, the long-wavelength RTP magnetic anomaly, and the horizontal gradient magnitude of the long wavelength pseudo gravity calculated from the long wavelength RTP. The directory also includes shapefiles of locations that trace the maxima of the horizontal gradient magnitude of the pseudo-gravity...

The lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB), calculated from calibrated surface wave tomography models, is marked by an abrupt change in seismic velocity between the earth's cooler lithosphere (higher seismic velocities) and the warmer and more ductile asthenosphere (lower seismic velocities). GeoTIFF grids that were extracted from global compilations (Hoggard and others, 2020) that map depth to the LAB for the United States and Canada, and for Australia are provided in this report. Previous studies have identified locations of sediment-hosted Pb-Zn deposits occur along a gradient in the depth of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary. The LAB gradient is interpreted to represent a change from thicker to thinner...

Tephra samples were collected by Leah Morgan (now at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)) from the Hugub Area, Kesem-Kebena-Dulecha, Afar, Ethiopia. Sanidine grains were separated from the bulk sample and analyzed by argon geochronology at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre, Scotland. The data indicate that the age of the Hugub Bed, which is rich in archarological artifacts, is ca. 500 ka. These results have broad implications in understanding late Acheulean archaeology in Ethiopia.

In 2012, US Geological Survey (USGS) and National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) embarked on an ambitious project to digitize surficial seafloor data from existing National Ocean Service (NOS) smooth sheets in the Gulf of Alaska including numerous bays bordering the Gulf. USGS and NOAA are using the data for the nation-wide usSEABED project that seeks to compile and unify existing seafloor characterization point data into GIS-friendly data using the dbSEABED program (Jenkins, 1997; Reid and others, 2005; Buczkowski and others, 2006; Reid and others, 2006) and for the North Pacific Research Board’s Gulf of Alaska Integrated Ecosystems Research Program (NPRB, GOA-IERP, http://www.nprb.org/gulf-of-alaska-project)...
