These data products are preliminary burn severity assessments derived from data obtained from suitable imagery (including Landsat TM, Landsat ETM+, Landsat OLI, Sentinel 2A, and Sentinel 2B). The pre-fire and post-fire subsets included were used to create a differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) image. The dNBR image attempts to portray the variation of burn severity within a fire. The severity ratings are influenced by the effects to the canopy. The severity rating is based upon a composite of the severity to the understory (grass, shrub layers), midstory trees and overstory trees. Because there is often a strong correlation between canopy consumption and soil effects, this algorithm works in many cases for Burned...

This dataset accompanies planned publication 'Near-Ridge Magmatism Constrained Using 40Ar/39Ar Dating of Enriched MORB from the 8°20' N Seamount Chain'. The Ar/Ar data are for samples that record the volcanic history of the area. The geochronology provides time constraints for the eruption of rocks studied in the manuscript. Samples were collected from the 8°20' N seamount chain by Molly Anderson (University of Florida), who sent them to the USGS Denver Argon Geochronology Laboratory for Ar/Ar analysis.

Grassland birds are among the most imperiled bird guilds in North America. Scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) are a semi-arid grassland bird whose populations have declined over the past half century. We monitored scaled quail in New Mexico to study the effects of habitat, temperature and precipitation on survival of scaled quail adults, nests, and broods. Seasonal nest survival (39.4%) had a positive relationships with increasing average weekly maximum temperature and grass density, and negative relationships with increasing average minimum temperature and percent bare ground. Seasonal brood survival (49.0%) had a negative relationship with increasing average weekly minimum and maximum temperature, and with increasing...

A third revision of the New Jersey Coastal Plain (NJCP) groundwater flow model, using MODFLOW-2005 (version 1.12.00), was completed to maintain the model’s usefulness for water-resource managment and development. The regional groundwater-flow model was initially developed for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Regional Aquifer System Analysis (RASA) program. Periodic revision of the model is required as the result of changing hydrologic stresses, different and more complex water management needs, and increased knowledge of hydrologic conditions. The RASA model was initially constructed in the 1980’s as a quasi-3D model with 10 aquifers. The 9 intervening confining units were simulated using vertical leakage parameters...

Samples of vein-type magmatic-steam alunite were collected over several field seasons from five mines and prospects (L&N, Mt. Edna, Christmas, upper Mineral Products, and Close In) in the Alunite Ridge and Deer Trail Mountain area, Marysvale, Utah, as well as a sample from the Deer Trail mine workings from which sericite was separated. The magmatic-steam alunite and sericite were analyzed by the 40Ar/39Ar method to constrain the timing and duration of magmatic activity associated with the intrusion of two porphyry stocks beneath Alunite Ridge and Deer Trail Mountain. In addition, a sample of a highly altered rhyolitic quartz porphyry dike was collected from the upper Mineral Products mine, from which zircons were...

A one-dimensional surface-water quality model of the central Salem River Basin, New Jersey was developed to examine the causes of eutrophication and predict the effects of reduced point and nonpoint source nutrient loads on water quality. The model was developed using the USEPA WASP code. The model simulates channel flow and the fate and transport of dissolved oxygen, oxygen demands, nutrients, and phytoplankton chlorophyll-a in the main stem river and largest tributary from April 1, 2007 to October 31, 2008. Continuous and discrete water-quality data from the Salem River were collected during this period to help build and calibrate the model. The calibrated model was used to evaluate the effects of (1) natural...

This USGS data release represents supplemental tabular data for an annual groundwater discharge by evapotranspiration (ET) from areas of spring-fed riparian vegetation, Stump Spring and Hiko Springs, Clark County, Nevada, 2016-18. The raw ET dataset contained multiple data gaps that were simulated and gap-filled with the water-level model utility in SeriesSEE, a USGS developed Microsoft Excel® addin. Continuous time-series data, including net radiation, sensible-heat flux, latent-heat flux, and ground-heat flux, from before and after the data gap(s) were used to simulate turbulent fluxes with multivariate regressions and the gramma transform, used for latent heat gaps after precipitation events. ET data were gap...

In the United States and globally, the lack of data on contaminant exposure from unregulated private-well point-of-use (POU) tapwater (TW) is a recognized public health data gap and an obstacle to risk management and homeowner decision making. Mead, Nebraska, is an agricultural community about 30 miles west of Omaha. To help address the lack of data on broad contaminant exposures in TW sourced from private water wells, a total of 22 samples were collected from 18 private wells during June 2022 and January 2023 and analyzed for 495 organic compounds, 34 inorganic constituents, and 11 microbial groups. The organic compounds included pesticides, pharmaceuticals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), disinfection byproducts...

Landsat Extended Acquisitions of the Poles (LEAP) imaging plan is a Landsat special request data collection program for Earth's polar regions that include Antarctica, Greenland, and Arctic sea ice geographies. The LEAP program includes Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 observatories that operationally acquire spaceborne images of all Earth's land surface and near-shore coastal environments. These images are acquired on a Worldwide Reference System-2, also called WRS-2. The WRS-2 is made up of paths and rows that define Landsat's imaged geography, and once acquired, are processed and discoverable in the U.S. Geological Survey's Landsat global data archive. The LEAP path-rows listed in the attached zipped data file represent...

Saline tidal wetlands are important sites of carbon sequestration and produce negligible methane (CH4) emissions due to regular inundation with sulfate-rich seawater. Yet, widespread management of coastal hydrology has restricted vast areas of coastal wetlands to tidal exchange. These ecosystems often undergo impoundment and freshening, which in turn cause vegetation shifts like invasion by Phragmites, that affect ecosystem carbon balance. Understanding controls of carbon exchange in these understudied ecosystems is critical for informing climate consequences of blue carbon restoration and/or management interventions. Here we present measurements of net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane, along...
