As part of a cooperative project during 1986 and 1987, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys studied the mineral development potential of the Chilkat Peninsula and Islands, Alaska, as part of the larger Juneau Mining District study. About 4/5 of the area is within the Alaska State Chilkat and Chilkat Islands State Parks and not open to mineral entry. This study located four new (or previously unreported) gold- copper prospects. One of these, the Road Cut prospect, was examined by trenching, drilling and geophysics. While sufficient grades and tonnages were not delineated by this work to constitute an economic deposit, they are sufficient to encourage...

To leach metals from porphyry copper samples in which chalcopyrite (CuFeS2)2) was the primary mineral, two thermophilic bacteria were used, Sulfolobus acidocaldarius and "ferrolobus. " Ferrolobus has not been classified, but is similar to Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. Both organisms are mixotrophic, thermophilic and acidophilic, and oxidize sulfur and iron. Leaching tests were conducted in 6 .ft x 0.5 ft glass leach columns heated to 60 C. The percents of copper, molybdenum, zinc, lead and iron extracted from mineral samples inoculated with mixed cultures of Sulfolobus acidocaldarius and ferrolobus were compared with the extraction of these metals from samples maintained under identical conditions but sterilized with...

A previously unreported occurrence of molybdenum and copper mineralization in a small granitic stock exposed at the toe of Billings Glacier, located 5.5 miles northeast of Whittier, Alaska, was discovered and examined briefly by personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) in July and August, 1981. Molybdenite occurs as disseminated grains and crystalline clusters, up to 1 1/2 inches across, apparently associated with hydrothermally altered portions and also along fractures in the granitic pluton. Molybdenite also occurs as disseminated grains in spheroidally weathering granitic xenoliths found in the pluton near its eastern contact. Minor pyrite and very minor amounts of chalcopyrite are disseminated throughout...

These volumes report on the study initiated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to develop and apply a methodology to quantitatively asses: the probability and potential benefits of technological innovation over the next twenty -five years. The potential was recognized for new technology to solve copper industry problems in the United States. Objectives of the study were to: (1) Develop a methodology to obtain the opinions of mineral experts about future events - their likelihood of occurrence, and, conditional on occurrence, when and to what extent they are likely to occur; (2) Identify, select, and describe potential technological innovations Lin which would have significant imp ct.,.on copper production; (3) Implement...

The purpose of this report is to discuss in-place leaching technology in the U.S.A. Application of in-place leaching to uranium ores has been particularly successful. The sandstone ores are contained above and below by impermeable shales and the uranium ore minerals are easily leached with oxidizing acid or base solutions. Copper is recovered from sub-grade rock by dump or in-place leaching with acidified ferric sulfate solutions. The leaching solution migrates down through the rock and dissolves copper. The solution is collected from the base of the dumps and copper is recovered by solvent extraction electrowinning or by cementation on detinned steel cans. Solution mining of evaporites is being conducted commercially...

During the last decade it has been established that conventional flotation control strategies based on classical control theory result in significant increases in grade, recovery, and operating -cost savings. In the current report a description of an advanced model -based control philosophy is presented. The derivation and verifica tion of a simplified flotation model is described. The implementation of a Kalman filter for estimation of unmeasured variables for input to controllers is discussed. Several control strategies using the model -based approach are described, emphasizing the nonlinear nature of the flotation plant, Expected trends in the implementation of such model -based flotation control strategies...
