The over-all objective of the program was to determine, by laboratory experiments, the kinetics and the mechanics of the various reactions which produce acid in coal mine drainage. Secondary objectives included identification of the role of bacterial catalysts, evaluation of methods to inhibit pyrite weathering, and laboratory application of a new method of weathering inhibition.
The Juneau Gold Belt portion of the Juneau Mining District has historically had the greatest mining and exploration activity within the district and is the subject of this report. Between 1880 and 1983, the mines within the Juneau Gold Belt produced 6.7 million oz gold, 3.1 million oz silver, and 45 million lbs lead, all of which had a total value of about $157,000,000. Information in this report is based on an extensive literature search which included unpublished private company reports, U.S. Geological Survey, State of Alaska, and Bureau reports, personal interviews, and Bureau field work.
