The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently completed a comprehensive assessment of in-place oil in oil shales in the Eocene Green River in the Greater Green River Basin, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. A database was compiled that includes about 47,000 Fischer assays from 186 core holes and 240 rotary drill holes. Most of the oil yield data were analyzed by the former U.S. Bureau of Mines oil shale laboratory in Laramie, Wyoming, and some analyses were made by private laboratories. Total in-place resources for the three assessed units in the Green River Formation are: (1) Tipton Shale Member, 362,816 million barrels of oil (MMBO), (2) Wilkins Peak Member, 704,991 MMBO, and (3) LaClede Bed of the Laney Member, 377,184...

ESRI GRID raster datasets were created to display and quantify nahcolite resources for eight oil shale zones in the Piceance Basin, Colorado as part of a 2009 National Oil Shale and Nahcolite Assessment. The zones in descending order are: L-5, R-5, L-4, R-4, L-3, R-3, L-2, and R-2. Each raster cell represents a one-acre square of the land surface and contains values for nahcolite tonnage. The gridnames follow the naming convention *_n, where "*" can be replaced by the name of the oil shale zone.

The data set for this coverage includes arcs, polygons, and polygon labels that outline and describe the general geologic age and type of bedrock of the Arabian Peninsula and selected adjacent areas. It also includes shoreline and inland water bodies. The Arabian Peninsula is part of Region 2 for the USGS World Energy Assessment.

This is a coverage of surface and Federal mineral ownership in the Powder River Basin area, Montana and Wyoming. This coverage is the combination of several ARC/INFO coverages and MOSS format files that were collected from the BLM, reformatted as needed, modified, and/or created by the USGS from hard copy BLM 1:100,000-scale surface and mineral management status maps. The Powder River Basin has the largest in-place coal resources of any field in the contiguous U.S. (Keystone, 1997), and produces over one-fourth of the Nation's total coal production (The Mining Record, 1997). In the Powder River Basin, very little of the surface is Federal land, yet almost all of the coal is Federally owned.

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Denver Basin Province is located in eastern Colorado, western Nebraska, southern South Dakota, and eastern Wyoming encompassing all or parts of Pueblo, El Paso, Crowley, Lincoln, Kit Carson, Elbert, Teller, Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, Arapahoe, Adams, Washington, Yuma, Morgan, Weld, Broomfield, Boulder, Larimer, Logan, Sedwick,...

The base of the Pittsburgh Coal bed and its stratigraphically (non-coal) equivalent horizon is used to subdivide Upper Pennsylvanian Series strata into the overlying Monongahela Group and the underlying Conemaugh Group in the Appalachian Basin coal region. This dataset depicts areas in which Pittsburgh coal resources were calculated and was obtained largely from published maps. Because different coal thickness criteria were used to delineate the line denoting known resources in Ohio versus West Virginia, an offset is observed at the State boundaries. This dataset is a polygon coverage of counties limited to the extent of the Pittsburgh coal bed resource areas. The file has been generalized from detailed coverages...

This ArcView shapefile contains a polygon representation of the overburden thickness above the uppermost coal in the Deadman coal zone in the southern part (Black Butte area) of the Point of Rocks-Black Butte coalfield, Greater Green River Basin, Wyoming. This shapefile is part of the National Coal Resource Assessment of the Northern Rocky Mountain and Great Plains Fort Union Coal Resources Assessment Area. This shapefile can be shown in relation to other relevant themes of this area.
This dataset is a polygon coverage of counties limited to the extent of the Fire Clay coal zone resource areas and attributed with original resources (millions of short tons) in aggregated reporting categories as described in USGS Circular 891. The file has been generalized from detailed geologic coverages found elsewhere in Professional Paper 1625-C. This resource model for the Fire Clay coal zone must be considered provisional, because the correlation of the zone continues to be evaluated in West Virginia.

This dataset is a polygon coverage of counties limited to the extent of the Fire Clay coal zone resource areas and attributed with remaining resources (millions of short tons) in aggregated reporting categories as described in USGS Circular 891. The file has been generalized from detailed geologic coverages found elsewhere in Professional Paper 1625-C. This resource model for the Fire Clay coal zone must be considered provisional, because the correlation of the zone continues to be evaluated in West Virginia.

These mapped faults are modified from Plate 2, Principal structural features, Gulf of Mexico Basin (compiled by T.E. Ewing and R.F. Lopez) in Volume J, The Geology of North America (1991); Plate 2, Geologic map of the U.S. Appalachians showing the Laurentian margin and the Taconic orogen (compiled by D.R. Rankin, A.A. Drake, and N.M. Ratcliffe) in Volume F-2, The Geology of North America (1989); and Plate 9, Tectonic map of the Ouachita orogen (compiled by W.A. These data provide generalized outlines of major basins and uplifts in the Gulf Coast region modified after Plate 2, Principal structural features, Gulf of Mexico Basin (compiled by T.E. Ewing and R.F. Lopez) in Volume J, The Geology of North America (1991). This dataset contains basic data and interpretations developed and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey's Framework Studies and Assessment of the Gulf Coast Project. Other major sources of data include publicly available information from state agencies as well as publications of the U.S. Geological Survey and other scientific organizations. In cases where company proprietary data were used to produce various derivatives such as contour surfaces, the source...

This shapefile contains land status and Federal mineral ownership of the Hanna and Carbon Basins, Wyoming. The polygon shapefile contains two attributes of ownership information for each polygon. One attribute indicates where the surface is State owned, privately owned, or, if Federally owned, which Federal agency manages the land surface. The other attribute indicates which minerals, if any, are owned by the Federal govenment. This coverage is based on land status and Federal mineral ownership data compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Wyoming State Bureau of Land Management (BLM) at a scale of 1:24,000. These data were compiled primarily to serve the USGS National Coal Resource Assessment Projects...
