The digitally compiled map includes geology, oil and gas field centerpoints, and geologic provinces of the Arctic (North Pole area encircled by 640 N Latitude). The GIS data sets were designed originally in ESRI's ARC/INFO ver. 8.0.1 and were published as part of a series of interim CD-ROM products of the U.S. Geological Survey's World Energy Project (WEP). The goal of the WEP is to assess the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources of the world. Results of this assessment were reported in the year 2000 (see USGS DDS-60; http://pubs.usgs.gov/dds/dds-060/).

A monthly water balance model (MWBM) was driven with precipitation and temperature using a station-based dataset for current conditions (1949 to 2010) and selected statistically-downscaled general circulation models (GCMs) for current and future conditions (1950 to 2099) across the conterminous United States (CONUS) using hydrologic response units from the Geospatial Fabric for National Hydrologic Modeling (Viger and Bock, 2014). Six MWBM output variables (actual evapotranspiration (AET), potential evapotranspiration (PET), runoff (RO), streamflow (STRM), soil moisture storage (SOIL), and snow water equivalent (SWE)) and the two MWBM input variables (atmospheric temperature (TAVE) and precipitation (PPT)) were summarized...

This dataset was created to support the Washington D.C. StreamStats project funded by the Washington D.C. Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE). The dataset contains digital elevation model (DEM), flow direction and catchment layers that were conditioned using Washingtons D.C.’s stormwater network layer. The data are hosted online as a component of the USGS StreamStats web application (https://streamstats.usgs.gov), where users can interact with a map of Washington D.C.’s stormwater pipe system and National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) “best resolution” blue lines to delineate drainage basins that account for pipe flow. This project utilized 1-meter (high resolution) terrain products, which improves upon existing...

In Hawai‘i and other oceanic islands with few native land mammals, black rats (Rattus rattus) are among the most damaging invasive vertebrate species to native forest bird populations and habitats, due to their arboreal behavior and generalist foraging habitats and habitat use. We evaluated the nesting response of Hawai‘i ‘Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis; Monarchidae), a generalist insectivore, to the removal of black rats using rodenticide in a before-after-control-impact study in high and low, mesic montane habitat recovering from long-term damage from introduced ungulates and weeds. We monitored nesting and rat activity during 2015–2016 before applying diphacinone bait in 2017 to remove rats from two 700 x...

The Cape Fear River Basin was added to a nationwide program called The Sustainable Rivers Program (SRP) in 2016. SRP is a joint program between The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) to improve the health of rivers by analyzing how the Corps operates their infrastructure, such as the release of water out of dams. The SRP attempts to analyze the effects from dams and use reservoir operations to enhance and manage downstream (and sometimes in lake) ecosystems. Once a river is in the program, it goes through a formal process to consider e-flows for a basin. This includes gathering technical stakeholders to discuss the issues and potential solutions in the basin, compiling a literature...

A cells polygon feature class was created by the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in the State of Pennsylvania. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown or dry. Data were retrieved from the Pennsylvania Internet Record Imaging System (PA*IRIS). Cells were developed as a graphic solution to overcome the problem of displaying proprietary well data. No proprietary data are displayed...

This data set, compiled by the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station, provides near-bottom measurements of temperature and dissolved oxygen for the Central Basin of Lake Erie. Data were recorded by self-contained environmental data loggers (PME, Inc., MiniDOT data loggers). The data loggers were deployed to collect data during August 2021 through November 2022 to better understand how hypoxia develops and influences fish habitat quality during lake stratification. The data loggers were deployed on acoustic telemetry receivers in a network designed to record tagged fish movements (Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, GLATOS). Additional years of data collection are planned, and data release will be updated...

The hydrogen index (HI) is a parameter obtained from Rock-Eval data which reflects general hydrocarbon generation and maturation trends in petroleum systems. In the Mississippian Barnett Shale, the hydrogen index was used to map general boundaries between regions of oil and gas generation within the extents of the formation. Hydrogen index values were obtained via Rock-Eval analyses of Barnett Shale core samples. In this system, HI values greater than 100 represent primarily oil generation and HI values less than 100 represent primarily gas generation. Secondary gas generation is indicated by HI values less than 50. In addition, the 100 HI line was utilized to establish part of the assessment unit (AU) boundaries...
