Water surface elevations within seven Willamette River off-channel features (OCF; alcoves and side channels) were measured using submerged pressure transducers. Transducers were installed from late May through mid-October, 2016, when discharge of the Willamette River was between approximately 5,500 and 45,000 cubic feet per second at Salem, Oregon (USGS gage 14191000) and 3,500 to 17,500 cubic feet per second at Harrisburg, Oregon (USGS gage 14166000). Pressure transducer sensor depth was measured at all seven sites. For five of the sites, pressure transducer sensor depths were converted to water surface elevations by surveying the water surface at each transducer with a real-time kinematic global positioning system...

Abstract The isotopic composition of Pb in fugitive dust suspended by a vehicle from 13 unsurfaced roads in Missouri was measured to identify the source of Pb within an established long-term mining area. A three end member model using 207Pb/206Pb and concentration as tracers resulted in fugitive dust samples plotting in the mixing field of well characterized heterogeneous end members. End members selected for this investigation include the 207Pb/206Pb for 1) a Pb-mixture representing mine tailings, 2) aerosol Pb impacted soils within close proximity to the Buick secondary recycling smelter, and 3) an average of soils, rock cores and drill cuttings representing the background characteristics. Aqua regia total concentrations...

Data on gold deposits are extracted from an existing publication to enable analysis. The data comprise selected portions of a data set that are published by C.J. Hodgson in "Preliminary Report on the Timmins-Kirkland Lake Area Gold Deposits File," which is available online as a digital image of a report. As an image, the data set cannot be analyzed. Consequently, selected portions of the data set are re-published here in a text file. The datum for the latitude and longitude is not specified in the report and is assumed to be the North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27). The Ontario Geological Survey, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Ontario, Canada kindly granted permission to re-publish these data. Hodgson,...

This dataset documents results from 1,041 groundwater samples collected during 1986‒2015 from 16 geologic units in Pennsylvania associated with 25 or more groundwater samples with activities or concentrations of radon-222. Radon-222 is hereafter referred to as “radon.” These 16 geologic units were evaluated in an effort to identify variations in radon concentrations and to classify potential radon exposure from groundwater and indoor air. This dataset was developed for the Pennsylvania Environmental Public Health Tracking (PAEPHT) Program to describe the spatial distribution of radon concentrations in groundwater in Pennsylvania and to illustrate data gaps that exist throughout the State. The PAEPHT Program is part...

This dataset contains a bare earth digital elevation model (DEM), with a 0.5-square-meter (m2) cell size, of the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota. The DEM was based primarily on airborne lidar data acquired by Fugro Horizons of Rapid City, South Dakota, and made into a DEM by USGS personnel using the ArcGIS extension LP360 (QCoherent Software, 2013). Additional DEM processing to incorporate the bathymetry of study wetlands was done using survey-grade global positioning system (GPS) data collected by soundings of the bottom of each wetland. Through these steps, a continuous elevation model representing both the surrounding uplands and wetland basins was produced for the site (Mushet and Scherff...

These products were developed to provide scientific and correspondingly spatially explicit information regarding the distribution and abundance of conifers (namely, singleleaf pinyon (Pinus monophylla), Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma), and western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis)) in Nevada and portions of northeastern California. Encroachment of these trees into sagebrush ecosystems of the Great Basin can present a threat to populations of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). These data provide land managers and other interested parties with a high-resolution representation of conifers across the range of sage-grouse habitat in Nevada and northeastern California that can be used for a variety of...

We measured ontogenetic changes in routine and maximum swimming speeds of bighead, grass, and silver carp larvae. Daily measurements of routine swimming speed were taken for two weeks post-hatch using a still camera and the LARVEL program, a custom image-analysis software. Larval swimming speed was calculated using larval locations in subsequent image frames and time between images. Using an endurance chamber, we determined the maximum swimming speed of larvae (post gas bladder inflation) for four to eight weeks post-hatch.

Bathymetric and topographic data on the mainstem Nooksack River, Whatcom County, Washington were collected in the fall of 2015 as part of a study on sediment transport and channel change. Bathymetric data was collected from the river's mouth to river mile (RM) 28, near Nugent's Corner. Topographic data is available from RM 17, near the town of Lynden, to RM 37, near the confluence of the Middle Fork Nooksack. More information on these datasets is available in their respective metadata. The overlapping extents of these surveys were merged to create a seamless elevation data set of the river bed and active channel. Aerial lidar acquired in 2013 was used to fill in holes where vegetation prevented photogrammetric reconstructions...

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) researchers often require detailed information regarding emergent marsh vegetation types (i.e., fresh, intermediate, brackish, and saline) for modeling habitat capacities and mitigation. In response, the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management produced a detailed change classification of emergent marsh vegetation types in coastal Louisiana from 2007 and 2013. This study incorporates decision-tree analyses to classify emergent marsh vegetation types using two existing vegetation surveys and independent variables such as Landsat and high-resolution airborne imagery from 2007 and 2013, bare-earth digital elevation models based...

Potential pollinator habitat was derived by ranking land use classifications and grassland quality based on ground truthing and remotely sensed features indicative of remnant prairie. High resolution (10m) land use data served as the basemap (Hartley et al 2017) from which most categories were identified. All known prairie remnants, prairie plantings, and clusters of mima mounds were delineated. Mima mounds were detected by deriving a slope at 1m scale with greater than 5% from high resolution LiDar data (3m). Mima mounds are indicative of areas in which the topsoil has not been significantly disturbed, and therefore have a higher potential to contain native prairie vegetation. Based on an in-depth literature review...

Central Asia, site of the historic Silk Road trade network, has long been a conduit for the movement of people, energy, and mineral resources between Europe and Asia. Once part of the former Soviet Union, this region was and continues to be an important producer of base and precious metals, rare metals (RM), including niobium, tantalum, and beryllium, and a past producer of rare earth elements (REE). The Tien Shan and Pamir Mountains regions, encompassing parts of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, are of significant interest for mineral exploration as these regions are thought to host substantial undeveloped and undiscovered resources of REE and RM. Based on this legacy, and as an...

The Kittlitz’s Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris) is a small, non-colonial seabird endemic to marine waters of Alaska and eastern Russia that may have experienced significant population decline in recent decades, in part because of low reproductive success and terrestrial threats. Although recent studies have shed new light on Kittlitz’s Murrelet nesting habitat in a few discrete areas, the location and extent of other possible nesting areas throughout most of its range remains unclear. This data release consists of (1) nest locations for the Kittlitz’s Murrelet (2) potential Kittlitz’s Murrelet nesting habitat. These data support the following publication (available online early): Jonathan J. Felis, Michelle...

GAP species range data are coarse representations of the total areal extent a species occupies, in other words the geographic limits within which a species can be found (Morrison and Hall 2002). These data provide the geographic extent within which the USGS Gap Analysis Project delineates areas of suitable habitat for terrestrial vertebrate species in their species' habitat maps. The range maps are created by attributing a vector file derived from the 12-digit Hydrologic Unit Dataset (USDA NRCS 2009). Modifications to that dataset are described here. Attribution of the season range for each species was based on the literature and online sources (See Cross Reference section of the metadata). Attribution for each...
