Genetic networks can characterize complex genetic relationships among groups of individuals, which can be used to rank nodes most important to the overall connectivity of the system. Ranking allows scarce resources to be guided towards nodes integral to connectivity. The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is a species of conservation concern that breeds on spatially discrete leks that must remain connected by genetic exchange for population persistence. We genotyped 5,950 individuals, from 1,200 greater sage-grouse leks distributed across the entire species’ geographic range. We found a small world network composed of 458 nodes connected by 14,481 edges that are described here. The files associated...

Lake-bottom sediment and associated quality-control samples were collected in August 2020 from one coring location (U.S. Geological Survey station 413756070321301, ASHUMET POND, MASHPEE MI-ASHPD-0011) in Ashumet Pond downgradient from a former fire-training area on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The core was collected to determine if per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were present in the bottom sediments of a lake known to have elevated concentrations of PFAS in surface water and groundwater (Tokranov and others, 2021), and whether the sediments could act as a continuous source of PFAS to the lake. Processing the sediment core entailed collection of discrete samples at intervals ranging from 1-5 centimeters (cm)...

In response to Executive Order 13817 of December 20, 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) coordinated with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to identify 36 nonfuel minerals or mineral materials considered critical to the economic and national security of the United States (U.S.) (https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2018/1021/ofr20181021.pdf). Acquiring information on possible domestic sources of these critical minerals is the rationale for the USGS Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI). The program, which partners the USGS with State Geological Surveys, Federal agencies, and the private sector, aims to collect new geological, geophysical, and topographic (lidar) data in key areas of the U.S. to stimulate mineral...

Beaches and water recreation are important to the South Padre Island, Texas area and across the United States. The movement of sediment in channels along beaches and the nearshore environment is important for coastal stakeholders and resource managers. Sediment removed by maintenance dredging is often placed back into the littoral system for potential beach replenishment. The movement of sediment from offshore berms to onshore beaches is not well known. Sediment transport is highly dependent on local current conditions and seasonal conditions. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the City of South Padre Island, completed an oceanographic field study from August 2018 to February 2019 to investigate the...

We tested the utility of a protocol using genetic markers that previously proved successful to identify the sex of Vespertilionid bats on tissues collected from live bats and carcasses of varying age from the Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus semotus). This molecular method is based on genes unique to X and Y chromosomes in mammals and previously was used successfully on North American hoary bats (L. cinereus). Using genotyping, we determined the sex of 123 of 125 Hawaiian hoary bat tissue samples from carcasses. This dataset includes all 73 samples from the original data release, plus 58 additional samples. NOTE: While previous versions are available from the author, all the records in previous versions can be found...
