The U.S. Geological Survey, Western Ecological Research Center (USGS-WERC) was requested by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to create a database for marine birds of the California Current System (CCS) that would allow quantification and species ranking regarding vulnerability to offshore wind energy infrastructure (OWEI). This was needed so that resource managers could evaluate potential impacts associated with siting and construction of OWEI within the California Current System section of the Pacific Offshore Continental Shelf, including California, Oregon, and Washington. Along with its accompanying Open File Report (OFR), this comprehensive database can be used (and modified or updated) to quantify...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), compiled Fall 2017 fluid level elevation data from idle oil and gas wells in the Oxnard Oil Field to estimate vertical hydraulic head difference between oil production and overlying groundwater aquifer zones. Fluid elevations came from two sources, measurements in idle oil and gas wells and groundwater elevations in water wells in the overlying aquifer estimated at the points of idle well measurements using geographic information system (GIS) procedures. The fluid elevations from idle oil and gas wells were compiled by the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) as part of their Idle...

This data set provides a polygon shapefile delineating relatively large, slow-moving (4-17 cm/year in the radar line-of-sight direction) landslides in the continental U.S. western coastal states (California, Oregon, and Washington). The polygons also are provided in a Google Earth .kmz file. Delineated landslides were identified from displacement signals captured by InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferograms of ALOS PALSAR (Advanced Land Observing Satellite; Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar) images between 2007 and 2011, and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 images between 2015 and 2019. The ALOS PALSAR images utilized cover the three states entirely; the ALOS-2 PALSAR images utilized cover primarily...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board compiled and analyzed data for the purpose of mapping groundwater salinity in selected oil and gas fields in California. The data for the Fruitvale and Rosedale Ranch oil fields include well construction data, digitized borehole geophysical data, geochemical analyses of water samples from oil and gas wells and groundwater wells, geological formation depths, and the groundwater total dissolved solids (TDS) calculations used in an accompanying manuscript. These data have been compiled from many sources and span several decades. The well construction data includes attributes such as the date drilling began (spud...
This data set contains information on zooplankton and associated environmental parameters for sampling conducted in the San Joaquin River and False River near their confluence at Jersey Point (Contra Costa County, California), during February-March, 2016. Macrozooplankton were sampled with vertical tows (bottom to surface) of a 50 cm-diameter conical plankton net that was 150cm long with 102µm mesh. Samples were preserved in the field in 10% formalin for laboratory processing that was conducted by a contractor (EcoAnalysts, Inc). This data release supports the analysis of the recurrence interval of post-fire debris-flow generating rainfall in the southwestern United States. We define the recurrence interval of the peak 15-, 30-, and 60-minute rainfall intensities for 316 observations of post-fire debris-flow occurrence in 18 burn areas, 5 U.S. states, and 7 climate types. These data support the analysis described in Staley et al. (2020). Debris flow occurrence data and corresponding peak rainfall intensities are from Staley et al. (2016). Recurrence interval data are from NOAA Atlas 14 Volume 1: semiarid southwestern United States (Bonnin et al., 2004), Volume 6: California (Perica et al., 2014) and Volume 8: Midwestern States (Perica...

This Data Release consists of broadband ground motion simulations for 12 California region earthquakes. The ground motion simulations were done as part of a validation study that is described in more detail in Graves (2022). These simulations were computed using a hybrid simulation methodology (hereafter referred to as GP). The GP approach is a hybrid in that separate responses are computed for the low- and high-frequency components, which are then summed together to produce the full broadband response. The 12 earthquakes considered in Graves, R.W. (2022). Using a Grid-Search Approach to Validate the Graves-Pitarka Broadband Simulation Method, Earth, Planets and Space, 74:186, doi: 10.1186/s40623-022-01742-y, are...

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Water Availability and Use Study Program (WAUSP) (https://water.usgs.gov/ogw/gwrp/activities/regional.html) supports quantitative assessments of groundwater availability in areas of critical importance. As part of a WAUSP study in the arid to semi-arid Northwest Volcanic Aquifer Study Area (NVASA), estimates of runoff and baseflow were determined for 312 streamflow-gaging stations from 1904 to 2015. Gages with complete water years (October to September) of continuous-streamflow record were used to partition streamflow into runoff and baseflow, which is that part of streamflow attributed to groundwater discharge. For each water year annual estimates of baseflow, runoff, and a base-flow...

This data release presents raw (.csv) and processed (.csv) data files from land-based, frequency-domain electromagnetic induction (EMI) data collected at Bicycle Basin, U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center, California. Data were collected during three distinct time periods: March 19, 2008 (1 survey), December 1 to December 5, 2014 (46 surveys) and December 4 to December 8, 2015 (62 surveys). Data were collected by walking along survey lines throughout the airstrip region of the basin with the Geophex GEM-2 instrument at a height of approximately 1 meter above land surface in horizontal coplanar (ski flat) mode. The EMI data were used to map variations in subsurface electrical conductivity to investigate...
Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) are at the center of state and national land use policies largely because of their unique life-history traits as an ecological indicator for health of sagebrush ecosystems. These data represent an updated population trend analysis and Targeted Annual Warning System (TAWS) for state and federal land and wildlife managers to use best available science to help guide current management and conservation plans aimed at benefitting sage-grouse populations range-wide. This analysis relied on previously published population trend modeling methodology from Coates and others (2021, 2022) and includes population lek count data from 1960-2023. Bayesian state-space models estimated...
