Note: this data release has been superseded by version 2.0, available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9G2MFRX. Salinity and variability of salinity in shallow waters shape living resources and habitat within Gulf of Mexico estuaries. The salinity gradient is widely recognized as foundational in maintaining biological diversity and productivity of estuaries. A clear understanding of the factors controlling salinity and variability of salinity in estuarine surface waters is essential for proper stewardship and for sustaining ecological structure and function. Salinity data are collected by numerous Federal, State, and local agencies and universities as part of routine data collection programs. We used online databases...
The presence of salinity in shallow waters influences living resources and habitats within Gulf of Mexico estuaries. The salinity gradient is widely recognized as foundational in maintaining biological diversity and productivity of estuaries. A clear understanding of the factors controlling salinity and its variability in estuarine surface waters is essential for proper stewardship and for sustaining ecological structure and function. Salinity data are collected by numerous Federal, State, and local agencies and universities as part of routine data-collection programs. The U.S. Geological Survey compiled salinity data from existing online databases – all water samples were collected in Gulf of Mexico estuaries....

In cooperation with state and county agencies, including the Chester County Water Resources Authority (CCWRA), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has collected discrete stream samples for analysis of chloride concentrations at three real-time streamflow and water-quality monitoring (specific conductance) stations located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Data were collected from 2010-2023 at these stations for the application of predicting chloride concentrations using real-time continuous specific conductance and streamflow data. Regression equations were developed by relating discrete-sample chloride and discrete specific conductance data, as well as continuous streamflow data. Regression equations included possible...
