The data set outlines and describes the general geologic age and type of bedrock of the Former Soviet Union and selected adjacent areas. It also includes shoreline and inland water bodies.
The hydrogen index (HI) is a parameter obtained from Rock-Eval data which reflects general hydrocarbon generation and maturation trends in petroleum systems. In the Mississippian Barnett Shale, the hydrogen index was used to map general boundaries between regions of oil and gas generation within the extents of the formation. Hydrogen index values were obtained via Rock-Eval analyses of Barnett Shale core samples. In this system, HI values greater than 100 represent primarily oil generation and HI values less than 100 represent primarily gas generation. The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, hydrocarbon plays or assessment units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The province boundaries were drawn on the county lines that most closely followed the natural geologic boundaries.

The maturation contours show vitrinite reflectance trends and ranges for five key petroleum system horizons within the Uinta-Piceance Province. The horizons are the lower part of the Green River Formation, the base of the Mesaverde Group/top of Mancos Shale, the base of the Mancos Shale, the base of the Phosphoria Formation, and coal within the Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale.
